Chapter 10 - The Master of Her World

Two years later.

I stood on the wide, white teak deck of my eighty-foot yacht, The Zenith, idling anchored in the crystal-clear, turquoise waters off the coast of Amalfi, Italy.

The Mediterranean sun was warm and brilliant, casting diamonds across the gentle blue waves. The air smelled of salt, sweet lemon groves blowing down from the dramatic cliffs, and fresh lavender.

I was thirty-six years old.

My platinum-blonde hair had grown out into a stunning, shoulder-length angled bob that caught the golden Italian sunlight. I wore a chic white linen jumpsuit, oversized dark sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed straw hat.

Sitting at a shaded teak table on the aft deck was my global executive team—four brilliant, highly educated women and men who managed Carter-Vance’s European and Asian operational hubs. We were wrapping up a morning video conference with our global directors in London and Singapore.

"The expansion into the Port of Rotterdam is officially completed, Mrs. Carter," my Chief Operating Officer reported, closing her laptop. "We've secured sixty percent of the cold-chain shipping contracts for next quarter."

"Flawless execution, Sarah," I smiled, raising my glass of fresh sparkling peach water. "Take the afternoon off. Tell the captain to dock at Positano so the crew can enjoy dinner ashore."

"Thank you, Emily!" Sarah laughed, stepping down toward the lower salon with the rest of the team.

I walked to the mahogany railing at the stern of the yacht, leaning my arms against the smooth wood, looking out toward the soaring, pastel-colored houses clinging to the vertical cliffs of Amalfi.

My phone rang softly on the teak table.

I picked it up. It was an encrypted personal notification from my private family office manager back in Chicago.

“Emily, just a brief update. Daniel Carter was officially released to a halfway house in Rockford this morning after serving forty-eight months. He has applied for an entry-level dispatcher job at a regional trucking company in Iowa. Pursuant to your legal covenant, his probation officer has confirmed he remains under a lifetime non-contact order regarding you and your estate.”

I read the message once.

I didn't feel a single pulse of pain. I didn't feel a single flicker of regret.

I remembered that rainy Tuesday afternoon four years ago in Chicago—standing in an executive restroom with my hair hacked off, staring at a broken woman in the mirror, while the man I loved stood by and did nothing.

I remembered the humiliation that had hardened into something far stronger than heartbreak.

If Daniel hadn't betrayed me, if Vanessa hadn't picked up those scissors, I might still be sitting in that Lake Forest mansion—playing the quiet, dutiful, forgiving wife, living in the shadow of a man who was stealing my life.

They thought they were destroying me.

Instead, they had stripped away the only thing that was holding me back.

I dropped the phone onto the table, reached for my glass, and turned my face toward the warm, unfiltered Mediterranean sun.

The sky was endless, clean, and blue.

And for the first time in my life, my world was entirely, gloriously my own.
