Chapter 5 - The Handcuffs in the Lobby

The silence in the boardroom was so thick you could hear the soft, rhythmic hum of the air filtration system.
Daniel stood frozen at the head of the table. His jaw was slack; his hands were shaking so violently he had to press them flat against the mahogany wood to keep from falling over.
"You... you can't fire me," Daniel whispered, his voice stripped of all authority, sounding like a frightened child in an oversized suit. "I founded this company. My name is on the sign."
"Your name was on the sign, Daniel," I said, leaning back in my leather chair, crossing my legs effortlessly. "Now your name is on a forensic audit report."
Vanessa Brooks, realizing the ship was sinking into the ocean at terminal velocity, suddenly turned on Daniel like a cornered viper. She grabbed her leather purse, taking three steps away from him toward the board members.
"I didn't know!" Vanessa cried out, her eyes squeezing out fake, desperate tears. "I was just his assistant! He forced me to sign those offshore documents! He told me it was legal! He manipulated me!"
Daniel turned to her in absolute disbelief, his eyes wide. "Vanessa?! What are you talking about?! You asked for the Swiss account! You said you wouldn't stay with me unless I put the penthouse in your name!"
"He's lying!" Vanessa shrieked, looking at Richard Thorne. "He's obsessed with me! He threatened to fire me if I didn't go along with it!"
"How charming," I interrupted, my voice dropping into a razor-sharp tone that cut through their pathetic squabbling. "You two can debate the details of your romance in a court of law."
I snapped my fingers twice.
The double mahogany doors of the boardroom swung open. Standing in the doorway were two detectives from the Chicago Police Department Financial Crimes Division, accompanied by two uniformed officers and Frank, the lobby security guard.
Detective Ramirez stepped into the room, pulling a thick arrest warrant from his inner jacket pocket.
"Daniel Carter? Vanessa Brooks?" Detective Ramirez asked.
Vanessa went rigid. "I have nothing to do with this!"
"Miss Vanessa Brooks," Detective Ramirez read calmly from the paper. "You are under arrest for felony assault and battery involving a deadly weapon—arising from the incident yesterday afternoon on this floor—as well as grand larceny and corporate embezzlement."
A female officer stepped forward, grabbed Vanessa's arms, spun her around, and pulled her wrists behind her back. The metallic CLICK-CLICK of the handcuffs locking into place echoed sharply across the quiet boardroom.
"Let go of me!" Vanessa screamed, thrashing wildly against the officer's grip, her designer handbag falling onto the carpet, spilling lipstick, credit cards, and perfume bottles across the floor. "Daniel! Do something! Call the lawyers! Daniel!"
Daniel didn't move. He couldn't. He watched in sheer horror as the woman he had ruined his life for was dragged out of the boardroom screaming, her heels kicking uselessly against the door frame.
Detective Ramirez turned to Daniel.
"Mr. Carter," Ramirez said smoothly. "We're holding your passport pursuant to a federal financial fraud investigation. You need to come down to the station for questioning."
Daniel looked at the detective, then slowly turned his head to look at me.
I sat at the head of the table, framed by the soaring glass windows behind me that overlooked the Chicago skyline. I lifted my cup of Earl Grey tea, taking a slow, calm sip, meeting his gaze with unblinking, platinum-blonde coldness.
"Emily..." Daniel choked out, tears finally streaming down his pale, ruined face. "Please... don't do this to me. I made a mistake. I'm sorry. God, I'm so sorry... please..."
"You had five minutes yesterday, Daniel," I said softly over the rim of my teacup. "Your time is up."
The officers grabbed Daniel by the elbows, guiding him out of the room. He didn't fight them. He walked out with his head bowed, his shoulders slouched, his feet dragging against the carpet—a fallen corporate king dragged through the very hallways he used to rule.
Richard Thorne, the managing partner of MidWest Freight, watched the heavy mahogany doors close behind Daniel. Then he slowly turned his head, looking at me with a profound, newfound level of respect.
"Well, Mrs. Carter," Thorne said, leaning forward on his elbows, a faint, appreciative smile touching his lips. "It appears the leadership of Carter Global Logistics is finally in competent hands. Shall we discuss the terms of the ninety-million-dollar acquisition?"

I set my teacup down on the saucer with a soft, satisfying clink.
"We shall, Mr. Thorne," I said, opening my legal dossier. "But the price just went up by fifteen percent."
