Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Execution

The next morning at 8:15 a.m., I sat in the high-end private styling suite at Mario Tricoci on Michigan Avenue.
A senior celebrity stylist named Marco stood behind me, looking at the jagged devastation on the right side of my scalp with a mixture of professional horror and artistic determination.
"Who did this to you, darling?" Marco asked softly, holding a pair of professional shears. "This was done with extreme hostility."
"An amateur trying to take something that didn't belong to her," I replied, staring at my reflection in the lit mirror. "Can you fix it?"
"Fix it?" Marco smiled, his eyes flashing in the mirror. "Darling, I’m going to transform you. We're doing a sleek, asymmetrical platinum-blonde architectural bob. Shaved clean on the right side with a sharp, geometric fade, long and angled on the left. High fashion. Power. Lethal."
For ninety minutes, Marco worked with absolute precision. He bleached my dark hair into a blinding, icy platinum-blonde, cut the right side into a razor-sharp, flawless taper that made the assault look like an intentional, high-end fashion statement, and angled the left side so it brushed my jawline like a silk dagger.
When he finished, I looked in the mirror.
The quiet, suburban, forgiving Emily Carter was dead. Sitting in the chair was a woman who looked like she owned a hedge fund and collected the souls of her enemies for sport.
I dressed in an immaculate, custom-tailored charcoal-grey double-breasted suit from Alexander McQueen, dark red Christian Louboutin heels with blood-red soles, and dark designer sunglasses.
At 8:55 a.m., I stepped out of the private elevator onto the seventy-fifth floor of the Carter Global Logistics tower.
Arthur Vance and three senior corporate litigators were waiting for me in the lobby. The entire seventy-fifth floor was buzzing like a disturbed beehive. Employees were whispering near the water coolers; administrative assistants were staring at their computer screens in shock as corporate IT had locked down executive email accounts across the building.
I walked down the hallway toward the grand board room. My heels clicked against the marble with the steady, ominous rhythm of a marching drum.
I pushed open the double mahogany doors of the board room.
Inside, sitting around the twenty-foot boat-shaped conference table, were the seven members of the Board of Directors—all wealthy, influential men in their fifties and sixties. Sitting at the far end was Richard Thorne, the managing partner of MidWest Freight, a billionaire investor whose ninety-million-dollar buyout check was supposed to be signed today.
Daniel was sitting in the CEO chair at the head of the table. He looked dreadful. His eyes were bloodshot, his face was pale, his suit was wrinkled, and he smelled faintly of bourbon. Sitting right behind him in a visitor's chair was Vanessa, looking nervous, her fingers clutching a leather notebook.
When the doors swung open and I walked into the room, every single eye turned toward me.
Daniel gasped, leaning back in his chair. He stared at my platinum-blonde hair, my tailored McQueen suit, and my dark red heels as if a complete stranger had walked into his boardroom.
"Emily?" Daniel stammered, standing up. "What... what is the meaning of this? This is a private executive board meeting! You can't just barge in here!"
I didn't look at Daniel. I looked directly at Richard Thorne, the managing partner of MidWest Freight.
"Good morning, Mr. Thorne," I said smoothly, stepping up to the side of the table. "I am Emily Carter, Majority Voting Guarantor and Chief Legal Architect of Carter Global Logistics."
Richard Thorne stood up, offering a respectful nod. "Mrs. Carter. I've heard a great deal about you from your late father."
"Sit down, Emily!" Daniel snapped, his voice cracking with desperation. "Gentlemen, ignore her! My wife is currently undergoing a severe personal crisis. She is emotionally unstable. Security, remove her!"
Arthur Vance stepped forward, placing a thick leather binder on the center of the conference table with a heavy THUD.
"If security enters this room, Mr. Carter," Arthur Vance said, his voice booming across the leather-paneled walls, "they will be serving you with a federal indictment warrant for corporate embezzlement, bank fraud, and misapplication of commercial credit assets."
The room went dead silent. The board members exchanged terrified, wide-eyed looks.
"What the hell are you talking about?!" Daniel yelled, his hands gripping the edge of the table.
I walked around the table, stopping directly behind Daniel's chair. I placed my hands gently on the leather headrest, leaning down until my mouth was inches from his ear.
"Show them the Swiss file, Arthur," I whispered.
Arthur opened the leather binder, sliding three sets of financial documents toward Richard Thorne and the board members.
"Over the last fourteen months," Arthur explained calmly, "Mr. Daniel Carter has siphoned three point two million dollars from the MidWest Freight escrow account into an offshore shell entity registered in Zurich under the name 'VB Holdings'—controlled entirely by his assistant, Miss Vanessa Brooks, sitting behind him."
Vanessa let out a sharp gasp, jumping out of her chair. "That's a lie! That's a setup!"
"The wire transfer receipts bear your electronic signature, Miss Brooks," Arthur added without even looking at her. "Along with corporate credit card statements showing over four hundred thousand dollars in unauthorized personal luxury expenses—including a penthouse lease, jewelry, and private jet charters—charged directly to Carter Global operational accounts."
Richard Thorne picked up the financial documents. His face turned from polite curiosity to absolute, icy thunder. He looked up from the paper and stared at Daniel.
"Is this true, Daniel?" Thorne asked, his voice deadly quiet.
"No! It's a misunderstanding! I can explain!" Daniel stammered, sweat pouring down his neck, soaking his collar. "It was... it was a temporary reallocation of capital for corporate development!"
"It's grand larceny," I corrected him, stepping away from his chair and taking my seat at the head of the table. "And under Clause 14-B of the Master Debt Covenant, as the sole guarantor of the fifty-million-dollar primary credit line, I am exercising my emergency right to freeze all voting proxy rights held by the CEO."
I looked around the table at the seven board members.
"I move to immediately terminate Daniel Carter as Chief Executive Officer of Carter Global Logistics for gross breach of fiduciary duty and criminal misapplication of corporate assets," I said clearly. "All those in favor?"
The board members didn't hesitate. They didn't look at Daniel. They looked at the mountain of forensic evidence sitting on the table, and they looked at the woman who controlled the money.

Seven hands shot up into the air simultaneously.
"Motion passed unanimously," I said. "Daniel, you have ten minutes to clear your personal desk. Security will escort you from the premises."
