Chapter 2 - The Weight of Gold

The silence in the ballroom was so dense that the gentle hiss of the air conditioning sounded like a roaring wind.
Nico Valenti stood up slowly, tall and imposing in a dark charcoal bespoke suit. His presence radiated a terrifying, dark gravity that made every high-society guest in the room take a cautious step backward.
He turned his gaze down to Brielle, who was still kneeling among the glass, holding her bleeding hand against her apron.
“Stand up,” Nico said. His baritone voice was not loud, but it possessed a absolute weight that commanded immediate compliance.
Brielle blinked, staring up at him in shock. “Sir, I need to clean—”
“I said, stand up,” Nico repeated softly. He extended his right hand toward her.
The entire ballroom gasped. The feared head of the Valenti family was offering his hand to a blood-soaked, plus-size banquet server.
Brielle hesitated, looking down at her left hand, which was covered in dirt and blood. “I’m dirty, Mr. Valenti.”
“You are the only clean thing in this room,” Nico replied coldly, his eyes flicking briefly toward Miranda Kensington and Daniel Mercer.
Brielle took a breath, placed her uninjured hand into his warm, firm grip, and allowed him to pull her smoothly to her feet. As she stood, the physical contrast between them was striking—she was full-figured, curves hidden beneath an ill-fitting server’s uniform, while he was tall, sharp, and flawlessly tailored. Yet Nico held her with an unyielding stability that made her feel instantly anchored.
Nico did not let go of her hand. Instead, he gently lifted her injured right arm, examining the deep slice across her palm. His jaw clenched, a muscle ticking beneath his sharp cheekbone.
“Who brought the wine?” Nico asked, his voice chillingly calm.
Daniel Mercer swallowed hard, stepping forward with his hands raised defensively. “It was... it was brought from the reserve cellar, Mr. Valenti. But as I explained, she dropped the bottle—”
“I asked who brought it to this table,” Nico interrupted, his dark eyes shifting to Miranda Kensington.
Miranda smoothed her silk dress, putting on her practiced socialite smile, though her hands were subtly trembling. “Nico, darling, the server was clumsy. She bumped into my chair, knocked the tray over, and made a scene. Daniel is simply doing his job by terminating her—”
“Miss Kensington,” Nico cut her off, his voice dropping into a register that made the hair on the back of Miranda’s neck stand up. “You have five seconds to apologize to Miss Dawson.”
Miranda’s smile instantly evaporated. Her cheeks flushed bright red with shock and indignation. “Apologize? To a server? Nico, are you out of your mind? She’s staff! She’s trash!”
Nico did not raise his voice. He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a heavy platinum signet ring, engraved with the crowned viper crest of the Valenti bloodline.
Without looking away from Miranda, he took Brielle’s injured left hand, slid the heavy platinum ring onto her ring finger, and pressed her hand gently against his chest.
The ring fit loosely on her finger, but the symbolism hit the room like a physical explosion.
In the Grayhaven underworld, the Valenti crest was not mere jewelry. It was an absolute mandate of sovereign authority. To touch a person wearing that ring was to declare war on the entire Valenti Syndicate.
“Effective as of this second,” Nico announced, his voice echoing off the high marble walls, “Brielle Dawson is under my personal protection. She wears my crest. Any insult directed at her is an act of war against me.”
Miranda turned ash-white. She staggered back half a step, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
Daniel Mercer’s knees literally buckled, his face draining of all color as he stared at the platinum ring on the banquet server’s hand.
Nico turned to Daniel, his eyes dark as midnight. “You demanded four thousand dollars for a broken bottle of wine.”
“I... I...” Daniel stammered, his body shaking violently.
“Tomorrow morning,” Nico said softly, “Valenti Enterprises completes the purchase of the Marlowe Grand Hotel. Your contract is terminated immediately. Furthermore, you will personally clean every inch of this ballroom floor with your bare hands before sunrise, or my men will escort you to the river.”
May you like
Nico turned his back on the stunned crowd, wrapping his arm securely around Brielle’s waist.
“Come with me, Brielle,” he murmured gently. “We are leaving this place.”
