Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary

The black armored Rolls-Royce Phantom glided silently through the rain-slicked streets of Grayhaven, moving away from the glowing lights of the Marlowe Grand Hotel toward the exclusive cliffside estate district.

Inside the quiet, leather-scented cabin, Brielle sat on the plush leather seat, still in shock.

A private physician, Dr. Sarah Evans, whom Nico had summoned to meet them in the car, was carefully cleaning and bandaging Brielle’s cut palm with local anesthetic and sterile sutures.

Brielle stared at the heavy platinum ring gleaming on her left hand. The contrast between her stained, ripped server’s apron and the multi-million-dollar syndicate crest was absurd, almost surreal.

Nico sat across from her, sipping amber scotch from a crystal tumbler, watching her with silent, intense focus.

“Why did you do that?” Brielle asked softly, breaking the quiet cabin air once the doctor finished wrapping her hand in white gauze.

“Do what?” Nico asked smoothly.

“You destroyed Daniel Mercer. You terrified Miranda Kensington. And you put your family crest on my hand,” Brielle said, her dark gray eyes meeting his with direct honesty. “I’m just a server, Mr. Valenti. I’m a plus-size girl from the South Side who works twelve-hour shifts to pay rent. People like them call me trash every single day.”

Nico set his glass down on the wooden side table. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees, bringing his dark face close to hers.

“People like them are weak, arrogant cowards who hide behind money they didn't earn,” Nico said coldly. “I watched you tonight, Brielle. I saw Miranda push you. I saw you take the fall to protect the young girl standing near the dessert table.”

Brielle blinked, surprised. “You saw Lucy?”

“I see everything in rooms I enter,” Nico replied softly. “You suffered an insult and a physical injury to save a coworker’s job. That is courage. That is honor. Two qualities that no amount of money can buy Miranda Kensington.”

Brielle looked down at her lap, her throat tightening with unexpressed emotion. For six years, she had been treated as invisible, as a burden, as an eyesore by bosses and wealthy patrons alike. Nobody had ever recognized her strength.

“The ring stays on your hand,” Nico added, his voice leaving zero room for argument. “Tomorrow, the news of our alliance will spread throughout Grayhaven. My enemies will look for you. My allies will bow to you. You cannot return to your apartment on the South Side.”

“I have a lease,” Brielle pointed out timidly. “And my belongings—”

“My men are packing your apartment right now,” Nico stated calmly. “Your lease has been bought out. You will live at my estate, the Valenti Villa, under full tactical security.”

Brielle’s breath hitched. “I can’t just move into a mobster’s mansion! I don't belong in your world, Mr. Valenti!”

May you like

Nico leaned in closer, his thumb gently reaching out to lift her chin, forcing her to look directly into his piercing eyes.

“You belong wherever you stand, Brielle Dawson,” Nico promised softly. “And from this night forward, nobody in this city will ever call you trash again.”
