Chapter 1 - The Intersection of Destiny

The distant wail of a foghorn drifted from the Atlantic City harbor, cutting through the heavy, damp mist rolling off Delaware Bay and into the penthouse. Claire stood by the tall window, her fingers tightly gripping an encrypted satellite phone—the only thing she had managed to keep after that fateful night on the yacht three months ago.
For the past two years, her marriage to Grant Mercer had been nothing but a gilded cage. To the public, Grant was a charming, highly successful real estate broker. In reality, he was a money launderer and information broker for the criminal underworld, turning their apartment into a high-security prison. He controlled her finances, her relationships, and her every move under the guise of "protection."
But tonight, his game of control had crossed a dangerous line.
"Did you really think you could just walk out of here with those documents, Claire?" Grant’s cold, dry voice cut through the silence of the living room.
He stepped inside, clutching a thick blue folder—a detailed log of massive illicit transactions routed through shell accounts that Claire had secretly copied from his personal computer. It was her only ticket out, the evidence she needed to secure a place for herself and her unborn child in the federal witness protection program.
"Grant, just let me go," Claire said, her voice trembling but her gaze unyielding. She took a step back, instinctively wrapping an arm around her stomach to shield her baby. "What you've been doing... if the police find out—"
"The police?" Grant laughed, a harsh, humorless sound. He took a long stride forward, sweeping a porcelain vase off the desk. It shattered into a thousand jagged shards across the hardwood floor. "In this city, who do you think takes my money? Who do you think turns a blind eye? Nobody is coming to save you."
He lunged forward, grabbing her shoulders as he tried to wrest the phone and the backup drive from her hands. But before the struggle could escalate any further, a deafening crash shook the entire apartment.
The heavy oak front door imploded inward, splintering into pieces under the force of a single, powerful kick. Dust and the harsh light of the hallway flooded the room, framing a tall man in a bespoke, hand-tailored black suit. His face was sharp and angular, marked by a pale scar running along his temple—the unmistakable signature of Luca Moretti, the feared boss of the family that controlled Atlantic City's criminal underworld.
"That's enough, Mercer," Luca’s voice rumbled, low and heavy like thunder before a storm.

Grant froze. His face pale, his expression twisted from rage to pure terror in a fraction of a second. He let go of Claire and stumbled back. "Moretti... This is a private family matter. I don't owe your syndicate anything!"
"You don't owe me," Luca said, stepping over the ruined wood. His icy gray eyes swept over the dark bruises on Claire’s wrists before settling back on Grant. "But this woman is holding something that belongs to me. And I don't like other people touching my property."
