Chapter 3 - The War of Information

Claire was taken to a secure safehouse owned by the Moretti family, tucked away in a quiet, heavily wooded area on the outskirts of the city. The estate was heavily fortified with state-of-the-art security systems and guarded by Luca’s most loyal soldiers.

Here, Claire finally revealed why she had taken Grant's files. While working at the local hospital and assisting with the books for the Mercer family's private clinic, she had accidentally uncovered an illegal pharmaceutical distribution ring disguised as commercial real estate transactions handled by Grant and several corrupt city politicians.

"They use abandoned waterfront condominiums as drop points," Claire explained to Luca as they sat in the safehouse study. "Grant was the one who coordinated the entry codes and the coast guard patrol schedules."

Luca tapped his fingers slowly on the mahogany desk, his expression thoughtful. "I’ve suspected for a long time that someone was smuggling counterfeit goods through my ports without paying tribute. Mercer is just a mid-level coordinator. The real man behind this is Senator Vance—who is currently running for Governor."

"I have the digital ledgers of all their transactions," Claire said, sliding the small backup drive across the desk. "But their database requires a biometric key that only exists on Grant’s personal device. That’s why he was hunting me down so desperately."

At that moment, Luca's phone rang. It was his investigator calling from the city center: "Mr. Moretti, Grant Mercer has just escaped custody. A group of corrupt police officers intercepted his transport. They are currently locking down the exit routes out of Atlantic City to find Claire."

Luca hung up, his eyes turning cold as ice. He looked at Claire, who was anxiously holding her stomach.

"Don't be afraid," Luca said, his voice steady and absolute. "They think they own this city. But they've forgotten who paved the roads."
