PART 5 — THE SECRET MABEL NEVER WANTED REVEALED

PART 5 — THE SECRET MABEL NEVER WANTED REVEALED
Mabel stood outside the house, phone pressed against her ear.
The street was quiet.
Too quiet.
But inside her mind, everything was chaos.
She looked toward Clara’s house.
The same house where Nora had run.
The same place she never expected the child to reach.
Because Mabel believed she had controlled every part of Nora’s life.
Every conversation.
Every fear.
Every decision.
But she had forgotten one thing.
A scared child may stay silent for a long time…
But eventually, silence breaks.
“Hello?”
A man’s voice answered.
Mabel lowered hers.
“She found him.”
A pause.
“What?”
“Johnson found Nora.”
The line went silent.
Then:
“That’s impossible.”
Mabel closed her eyes.
“I told you she was becoming a problem.”
The man breathed heavily.
“What did she tell him?”
“Not everything.”
“Yet.”
Mabel looked back at the house.
Her face hardened.
“We need to act before she does.”
Inside Clara’s house, Johnson sat beside Nora.
He refused to let go of her hand.
Not because she needed protection anymore.
Because he needed to remind himself she was real.
That she was there.
That he almost lost her.
“Nora.”
The little girl looked up.
“Yes?”
“Why didn’t you come to me?”
Her eyes dropped.
The question hurt.
Not because Johnson asked it.
Because she had an answer.
“I thought…”
She stopped.
Johnson waited.
“I thought you would be angry.”
His heart broke.
“Why would I be angry?”
Nora played with her fingers.
“Because Auntie said…”
Her voice became smaller.
“That I was making trouble.”
Johnson swallowed.
“What else did she say?”
Nora stayed quiet.
Then whispered:
“She said you only kept me because you promised my mother.”
The words hit him.
Because that was partly true.
He had promised.
But not because he had to.
Because he loved her.
“Nora.”
He turned toward her.
“Listen to me.”
“You were never a promise I had to keep.”
“You were someone I chose.”
Her eyes filled.
“You chose me?”
“Yes.”
“Every day.”
Clara watched from across the room.
Her eyes became wet.
“I’m sorry.”
Johnson looked at her.
“For what?”
“I should have said something sooner.”
He frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Clara looked at Nora.
Then away.
“I noticed things.”
Johnson froze.
“What things?”
Clara sighed.
“Changes.”
“She stopped laughing.”
“She stopped talking about school.”
“She stopped asking about her mother.”
Johnson felt anger rising.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Clara looked ashamed.
“Because Mabel convinced everyone.”
“She told people Nora was difficult.”
“That she was unstable because of losing her mother.”
Johnson looked down.
The truth was becoming clearer.
Mabel didn’t just hurt Nora.
She built a story around her.
A story where Nora was the problem.
At that moment, Johnson’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?”
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Mr. Johnson?”
“Yes?”
“This is Nora’s school counselor.”
His expression changed.
“Yes?”
“There is something you need to know.”
“What?”
The counselor hesitated.
“We found something in Nora’s old school bag.”
Johnson stood.
“What?”
“A letter.”
“To you.”
His heart stopped.
“A letter?”
“Yes.”
“But Nora never gave it to me.”
“That’s why I’m calling.”
The counselor’s voice lowered.
“Mabel collected her belongings after she left school.”
Johnson felt cold.
“What letter?”
The counselor answered:
“The letter says Nora was afraid.”
A pause.
“And she asked for help.”
The room became silent.
“Send it to me.”
“I already did.”
Johnson looked at his phone.
A message appeared.
One photo.
A folded piece of paper.
Written in a child’s handwriting.
He opened it.
The first line made his hands shake.
Dear Dad,
I don’t know if I should tell you this.
Because Auntie said you will be disappointed in me.
Johnson closed his eyes.
He continued reading.
She gets angry when nobody is watching.
She says I am ungrateful.
She says my mother left me because I am difficult.
Johnson covered his mouth.
A tear fell.
Then the last sentence:
I’m sorry I’m not the child you wanted.
That sentence destroyed him.
Because it revealed the biggest lie Nora had believed.
Not that she was afraid.
Not that she was unwanted.
But that she was not enough.
Suddenly, Clara’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
“What is it?”
Johnson asked.
She hesitated.
Then turned the phone toward him.
A message.
From Mabel.
Only one sentence.
“Bring Nora back before Johnson learns everything.”
The room went still.
Because now they knew.
Mabel wasn’t trying to apologize.
She wasn’t trying to fix things.
She was trying to hide something.
Johnson stood.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“She knows.”
Clara looked at him.
“What?”
“She knows the truth is coming.”
Outside…
Mabel sat in her car.
Watching the house.
Waiting.
And beside her…
Was someone Johnson never expected to see.
Someone connected to Nora’s past.
Someone who could change everything.
Mabel whispered:
May you like
“It’s time to tell him the truth.”
