PART 7 — THE PERSON BEHIND EVERYTHING

PART 7 — THE PERSON BEHIND EVERYTHING

Nobody moved.

The shadow outside the gate remained still.

Watching.

Waiting.

The engine of the car had stopped, but nobody stepped out.

For a few seconds, the only sound was Nora’s quiet breathing.

Then Johnson spoke.

“Mabel.”

His voice was cold.

“Who is that?”

Mabel didn’t answer.

And that frightened him more than anything.

Because Mabel always had an answer.

Always had a reason.

Always had a story.

But now…

She was silent.

Johnson stepped toward the door.

Mabel immediately moved in front of him.

“No.”

He stopped.

“What?”

“Don’t go outside.”

His eyes narrowed.

“You said you wanted protection.”

“Yes.”

“From who?”

Mabel looked at him.

Her voice dropped.

“From my brother.”

Everyone froze.

“Your brother?”

Clara repeated.

Mabel nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Johnson stared.

“I didn’t know you had a brother.”

“Because nobody was supposed to.”

The gate opened.

Slowly.

A man walked in.

Older.

Calm.

Confident.

He looked around the house as if he had been there before.

His eyes stopped on Nora.

And the little girl immediately hid behind Johnson.

The man noticed.

Then smiled.

“So this is her.”

Johnson stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

The man looked at Mabel.

“You didn’t tell him?”

Mabel looked away.

“My name is Richard.”

Johnson’s expression changed.

“Richard?”

“Yes.”

“And I am the reason you never knew the whole story.”

Johnson felt anger rising.

“What story?”

Richard smiled slightly.

“The story about Nora.”

Nora tightened her grip on Johnson’s hand.

“Dad…”

“I’m here.”

Richard looked at her.

“You look exactly like your mother.”

The sentence made everyone uncomfortable.

Because there was something familiar in his voice.

Something personal.

Johnson noticed.

“How do you know my wife?”

Richard laughed softly.

“You still don’t understand.”

He looked at Mabel.

“She never told you?”

“Mabel.”

Johnson turned.

“What is he talking about?”

Mabel’s face was pale.

“I was going to explain.”

“When?”

“Before things got worse.”

Johnson laughed.

“Things are already worse.”

Richard stepped closer.

“Your wife knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That Nora was in danger.”

Johnson shook his head.

“No.”

“She trusted Mabel.”

Richard looked at him.

“She trusted her because she thought Mabel would protect Nora.”

A pause.

“But she was wrong.”

Mabel closed her eyes.

“Richard, stop.”

But he continued.

“She was wrong about me too.”

Everyone looked at him.

“I wasn’t supposed to come back.”

Johnson frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Richard looked at Nora.

“Your mother and I had history.”

Clara immediately stood.

“Don’t.”

Richard ignored her.

“Before she married you…”

Johnson’s face changed.

“No.”

The word came quietly.

But everyone heard it.

Richard continued.

“She knew me.”

“She knew what kind of person I was.”

Nora looked confused.

“Dad?”

Johnson couldn’t answer.

His mind was racing.

Too many secrets.

Too many pieces missing.

“Why are you here?”

Johnson asked.

Richard smiled.

“Because Mabel failed.”

Mabel turned sharply.

“Don’t.”

“You promised.”

Richard looked at her.

“And you broke your promise first.”

Johnson looked between them.

“What promise?”

Silence.

Then Richard said:

“The promise to keep Nora away from the truth.”

The room went cold.

“What truth?”

Johnson demanded.

Richard reached into his pocket.

He pulled out an old document.

Another one.

Just like the envelope.

“Nora’s mother left this.”

He held it up.

“She wrote everything.”

Johnson stared.

“Give it to me.”

Richard shook his head.

“Not until you understand.”

“I don’t care about your games.”

Johnson stepped forward.

“My daughter has been afraid for months.”

“She was hurt.”

“She was alone.”

His voice broke.

“And all of you knew something.”

Richard looked at Nora.

Then said something unexpected.

“She was never supposed to live with Mabel.”

Johnson froze.

“What?”

“Mabel didn’t take her because she loved her.”

“She took her because she wanted access.”

“To what?”

Richard looked at Johnson.

“To your wife’s inheritance.”

The room fell silent.

Clara whispered:

“No…”

Richard nodded.

“Your wife left everything for Nora.”

Johnson looked shocked.

“My wife didn’t have an inheritance.”

Richard smiled.

“You thought she didn’t.”

He stepped closer.

“But before she died…”

“She discovered her family had hidden assets.”

“And she created a trust.”

Johnson remembered.

The letters.

The documents.

The strange behavior.

Everything connected.

“Mabel knew.”

Richard said.

“She knew Nora was the key.”

Johnson turned to Mabel.

“Is this true?”

Mabel didn’t answer.

Tears filled her eyes.

For the first time…

She didn’t look powerful.

She looked broken.

“I didn’t start this.”

Johnson stared.

“What?”

“I was trying to protect myself.”

“From him.”

She pointed at Richard.

Everyone turned.

Richard smiled.

“You still blame me.”

Mabel’s voice shook.

“Because you destroyed everything.”

Johnson looked confused.

“What happened between you two?”

Mabel looked at Nora.

Then whispered:

“I wasn’t the only one who hurt her.”

Richard’s smile disappeared.

And at that moment…

Johnson realized the truth was bigger than he imagined.

Mabel wasn’t the only secret.

She wasn’t the only danger.

The person standing in front of them…

May you like

Was the missing piece of the entire story.

TO BE CONTINUED…
