PART 9 — THE LAST PERSON WHO KNEW THE TRUTH

PART 9 — THE LAST PERSON WHO KNEW THE TRUTH

The house went completely dark.

No lights.

No sound.

Only the heavy breathing of everyone standing in the room.

Johnson immediately pulled Nora closer.

“Stay behind me.”

Nora nodded.

Her hands were trembling.

But this time…

She wasn’t alone.

A few seconds passed.

Then a flashlight appeared through the window.

A shadow moved outside.

Richard looked toward the door.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

“No…”

The word escaped his mouth.

Johnson noticed.

“You know who that is?”

Richard said nothing.

Mabel looked at him.

“You didn’t tell me.”

Richard remained silent.

“You said nobody else knew.”

Still nothing.

The front door opened.

Slowly.

Everyone turned.

An elderly man stepped inside.

His face was tired.

His eyes carried years of regret.

“Hello, Richard.”

Richard froze.

“You…”

Johnson looked between them.

“Who is he?”

The man looked at Johnson.

“My name is Thomas.”

A pause.

“I worked with Nora’s mother.”

Johnson frowned.

“Worked with her?”

Thomas nodded.

“She asked me to protect something.”

Richard stepped forward.

“You should have stayed away.”

Thomas looked at him.

“I should have spoken sooner.”

Johnson felt his anger rising.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“Everyone knew.”

“Everyone waited.”

His voice broke.

“Meanwhile, a child was suffering.”

Thomas lowered his head.

“You’re right.”

The answer surprised everyone.

“I failed her.”

He looked at Nora.

“I failed your mother.”

Nora stared.

“You knew my mom?”

Thomas nodded.

“She trusted me.”

Johnson asked:

“Then why didn’t you come forward?”

Thomas reached into his coat.

And pulled out a small envelope.

“Because your wife told me not to.”

Johnson froze.

“Why?”

Thomas looked at him.

“Because she believed the wrong person having this information would put Nora in danger.”

He held out the envelope.

“This is the final letter.”

Johnson stared.

“Final?”

“Yes.”

“Your wife wrote it days before she died.”

The room became silent.

Johnson took the envelope.

His hands shook.

He opened it.

Inside was a single page.

His wife’s handwriting.

My love,

If you are reading this, it means I was unable to explain everything myself.

Johnson stopped.

His vision blurred.

First, I need you to know one thing.

I never doubted your love for Nora.

A tear fell.

But I was afraid that after I was gone, people would use your kindness against you.

Johnson continued reading.

Nora is stronger than people think.

She notices everything.

She remembers everything.

He looked at Nora.

She was watching him.

Please believe her when she speaks.

Children often stay silent because they are trying to protect adults.

Johnson closed his eyes.

Because those words explained everything.

Then he read the last part.

The person who caused this is not the only person responsible.

Look at the person who had access to everything.

The person closest to us.

Johnson looked up.

Slowly.

Toward Mabel.

Mabel looked away.

Richard laughed suddenly.

A bitter laugh.

“You still don’t understand.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

Richard looked at Johnson.

“The letter isn’t about me.”

Johnson froze.

“What are you saying?”

Richard pointed.

“At her.”

Everyone looked at Mabel.

Mabel stepped back.

“No.”

Johnson stared.

“Mabel?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“You think I was the only one hiding something?”

“You think I was the only one manipulating people?”

Johnson’s face hardened.

“Explain.”

Richard continued.

“Mabel knew about the documents before your wife died.”

“She knew the inheritance existed.”

“She knew Nora was the key.”

Johnson looked at Mabel.

“Is this true?”

Mabel’s silence answered.

Nora whispered:

“Auntie…”

Mabel looked at her.

And for the first time…

She looked ashamed.

“I was scared.”

Her voice cracked.

“I didn’t know what to do.”

Johnson stared.

“So you hurt her?”

“No.”

“I protected myself.”

The answer made Johnson angry.

“By making a child afraid?”

Mabel started crying.

“I thought I could control everything.”

Thomas spoke quietly.

“She made a deal.”

Johnson looked at him.

“With who?”

Thomas looked at Richard.

“With him.”

Everything connected.

Richard wanted the documents.

Mabel wanted security.

And Nora became the person caught between them.

Johnson stepped forward.

“This ends now.”

Richard laughed.

“You think you can stop this?”

“Yes.”

Johnson pulled out his phone.

Richard’s face changed.

“What did you do?”

Johnson looked at him.

“I sent the recording.”

Silence.

“To who?”

“The police.”

Richard’s confidence collapsed.

“You wouldn’t.”

Johnson looked at Nora.

Then back at him.

“I should have done it sooner.”

Outside, sirens could be heard.

Getting closer.

Richard stepped backward.

“No.”

Mabel looked terrified.

The police lights flashed through the windows.

Red.

Blue.

Filling the room.

For the first time in years…

The truth was no longer hidden.

But before Richard was taken away…

He looked at Nora.

And said something unexpected.

Something that shocked everyone.

“I’m sorry.”

Nora stared at him.

Not forgiving.

Not forgetting.

Just silent.

Because some wounds take time.

Months later…

The story would finally reach the ending nobody expected.

Because the person everyone thought was only a victim…

May you like

Would become the person who changed everyone.
