Part 5: The Truth My Father Buried

The darkness swallowed the room.
But this time…
I wasn’t afraid of what was hiding in it.
I was afraid of what I already knew.
The woman standing in front of me knew my father.
She knew the past.
She knew why he disappeared.
And somehow, she knew the one thing nobody had ever dared say:
My father wasn’t protecting me from danger.
He was protecting the world from me.
Impossible.
At least, that was what I wanted to believe.
“Turn the lights back on.”
My voice was steady.
The woman didn’t move.
“You still have your father’s instincts.”
I stepped closer.
“Who are you?”
She looked at me for a long moment.
Then answered:
“Isabella Voss.”
The name meant nothing.
Until it did.
I remembered.
A photograph.
One of my father’s old files.
A woman standing beside him.
A woman my mother once called:
“His biggest mistake.”
My eyes narrowed.
“You knew him.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
She looked around the old study.
“Before Victor Hale.”
“Before your mother’s betrayal.”
“Before your father disappeared.”
A pause.
“I was there.”
I didn’t lower my guard.
“Why should I trust you?”
“You shouldn’t.”
The answer surprised me.
She continued:
“Your father taught me that trust is earned.”
She looked at the letter in my hand.
“He left that for you because he knew you would find it.”
“You expected me to come here?”
She nodded.
“He knew you would search for answers.”
My jaw tightened.
“Then why didn’t he come himself?”
Her eyes softened.
“Because he was afraid.”
“Of what?”
She looked at me.
“Of what would happen if you knew the entire truth.”
I hated those words.
The entire truth.
Because every time someone said them, another piece of my life collapsed.
“What truth?”
Isabella walked toward the desk.
She opened an old drawer.
Inside was a folder.
Thick.
Heavy.
Old.
She placed it in front of me.
“Your father kept records.”
I opened it.
The first page made my blood freeze.
PROJECT AURORA
I looked up.
“What is this?”
She didn’t answer immediately.
“Your grandfather started it.”
My eyes moved across the pages.
Financial models.
Psychological profiles.
Family evaluations.
My name appeared repeatedly.
ADRIAN MORETTI — SUBJECT
I stopped.
“What is this?”
Isabella was silent.
Then:
“Your grandfather believed power should not be inherited.”
“He believed it should be tested.”
My stomach tightened.
“No.”
She continued.
“He watched everyone.”
“Your father.”
“Your mother.”
“Victor.”
“And you.”
I looked at the documents again.
My childhood.
My behavior.
My choices.
Recorded.
Analyzed.
Like I wasn’t a grandson.
Like I was an experiment.
“He was testing me?”
Isabella nodded.
“Yes.”
“For what?”
She looked at me.
“To see if you would become like him.”
My breathing slowed.
“Like who?”
She whispered:
“Your grandfather.”
I remembered him.
The kind smile.
The gentle voice.
The fishing trips.
But suddenly…
I remembered other things.
The questions.
The lessons.
The way he always asked:
“What would you sacrifice for family?”
“What would you do if someone betrayed you?”
“What matters more?”
Love?
Power?
Control?
At the time, I thought he was teaching me wisdom.
Now…
I wasn’t sure.
“My father found out.”
Isabella nodded.
“Charles discovered Project Aurora.”
“And he wanted to destroy it.”
I looked down.
“Why?”
“Because he realized something.”
She stepped closer.
“Your grandfather wasn’t testing whether you were strong.”
“He was testing whether you could be controlled.”
The room felt colder.
“He wanted to create an heir who could survive anything.”
“But your father refused.”
“He said you were his son.”
“Not a weapon.”
A sound came from outside.
Footsteps.
Multiple.
Isabella immediately turned.
“He found us.”
I looked at her.
“Who?”
Her expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not the kind people pretend.
The kind that comes from knowing exactly what is coming.
“Your father.”
I froze.
“What?”
She shook her head.
“Not Charles.”
“Your grandfather’s people.”
My heart stopped.
“My grandfather is dead.”
“Yes.”
“Then who?”
She looked toward the door.
“The people who continued his work.”
The door opened.
Three men entered.
No weapons visible.
But everything about them screamed danger.
The man in front looked at me.
“Adrian Moretti.”
I stood.
“Who are you?”
He smiled.
“My name is Daniel Cross.”
“And I’m here to bring you home.”
I laughed coldly.
“Home?”
He glanced at the documents.
“You finally know.”
“Know what?”
His expression became serious.
“That your grandfather’s final plan succeeded.”
I stepped forward.
“I’m not part of any plan.”
He looked almost sorry.
“You still don’t understand.”
He pointed at the folder.
“Project Aurora wasn’t about creating an heir.”
My eyes narrowed.
“Then what was it about?”
He answered:
“Creating a successor.”
A pause.
“And the successor…”
He looked directly at me.
“Was never meant to inherit the company.”
My blood ran cold.
“Then what?”
His next words changed everything.
“He was meant to inherit the war.”
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A voice I hadn’t heard in years.
A voice I thought I would never hear again.
My father.
“Adrian.”
I froze.
“Dad?”
His voice was urgent.
“Listen to me.”
“Do not trust Isabella.”
I looked at her.
She stared back.
Confused.
My father continued:
“She will tell you I was protecting you.”
“She will tell you I sacrificed everything.”
A pause.
“But she’s lying.”
My heart pounded.
“Why?”
Silence.
Then my father said:
“Because Isabella was the person who betrayed me.”
The call ended.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Isabella looked at me.
And for the first time…
She looked afraid.
Not because of danger.
Because I had just heard the truth.
Or another lie.
I didn’t know anymore.
Then Daniel Cross smiled.
May you like
“Welcome, Adrian.”
“To the real family war.”
