Part 6: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Not Isabella.

Not Daniel Cross.

Not me.

Because my father’s words were still hanging in the air.

Isabella betrayed me.

I looked at the woman standing across from me.

The woman who had claimed she helped my father survive.

The woman who said she knew the truth.

The woman who had walked into my life at the exact moment I needed answers.

A thought entered my mind.

Maybe that was the problem.

Maybe she appeared because she wanted me to find her.

Not because she wanted to save me.

Because she needed something from me.

“Explain.”

My voice was directed at Isabella.

She looked hurt.

“Adrian…”

“No.”

I raised the phone.

“My father just told me you betrayed him.”

Her face changed.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Pain.

“That’s what he believes.”

My eyes narrowed.

“Is it true?”

Silence.

That was enough.

I stepped back.

“Everyone has an explanation.”

“My mother.”

“Victor.”

“My father.”

“And now you.”

I shook my head.

“I’m tired of being the only person who doesn’t know the rules.”

Isabella lowered her eyes.

“You have every right to hate me.”

A pause.

“But if you leave with them…”

She looked at Daniel Cross.

“You will never learn what really happened.”

Daniel smiled.

“Careful, Isabella.”

“You’ve already lost his trust.”

I looked at Daniel.

“Who are you really?”

He answered immediately.

“Someone who works for the people your grandfather trusted.”

I laughed.

“That doesn’t answer anything.”

He nodded.

“Fair.”

Then he reached into his coat.

Not a weapon.

A document.

He placed it on the desk.

“This is the original Project Aurora agreement.”

I didn’t touch it.

“What is it?”

“The reason your father disappeared.”

My chest tightened.

I opened the file.

The first page contained signatures.

My grandfather.

My father.

And…

Isabella.

I looked up.

“You signed this.”

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Her answer was quiet.

“Because I believed in it.”

The honesty surprised me.

“What does that mean?”

She looked at the papers.

“Your grandfather convinced us that the world was becoming dangerous.”

“That our family needed someone strong enough to survive.”

“He said you were special.”

My expression hardened.

“I was a child.”

“I know.”

Her voice broke.

“That’s why I regret it.”

I read further.

The document described a hidden network.

Assets.

Security systems.

People.

Influence.

But one sentence stood out:

The successor must be separated from emotional dependence.

I stared.

“What is this?”

Daniel answered.

“Your grandfather believed love created weakness.”

My jaw tightened.

“And my father disagreed.”

“Yes.”

“So why did he sign?”

Silence.

Then Isabella whispered:

“Because he was afraid.”

“Of what?”

She looked at me.

“Of you.”

My blood ran cold.

Again.

That word.

You.

Not danger.

Not Victor.

Me.

The old study suddenly felt like a cage.

“What happened?”

Nobody answered.

I slammed my hand against the desk.

“Tell me!”

The room shook with my voice.

For the first time, Daniel Cross looked uncomfortable.

Isabella finally spoke.

“Your grandfather created a test.”

I stared.

“What kind of test?”

She swallowed.

“When you were fifteen…”

A pause.

“He put you in a situation where you had to choose.”

My face went blank.

“I don’t remember.”

“You weren’t supposed to.”

My heart dropped.

“What did he do?”

Isabella looked away.

“He created a threat.”

“Against who?”

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

I already knew.

“Elena.”

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.”

A memory came back.

Not a complete memory.

Fragments.

My sister crying.

A dark room.

A man yelling.

My own hands shaking.

I remembered being fifteen.

I remembered finding Elena scared.

I remembered promising her:

“I’ll protect you.”

But I didn’t remember what happened next.

Why?

Because I had forgotten.

Someone had made me forget.

Daniel Cross stepped closer.

“Your grandfather wanted to see if you would choose family over power.”

I looked at him.

“What did I do?”

He answered:

“You destroyed the test.”

My breathing stopped.

“You refused to play.”

“You exposed the people involved.”

“And then?”

Daniel looked at Isabella.

“Your father erased the evidence.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

His answer was quiet.

“Because he realized your grandfather had been right about one thing.”

“What?”

Daniel looked at me.

“You were dangerous.”

My eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“You were willing to burn everything down to protect someone you loved.”

“That’s not dangerous.”

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.”

“Your father believed it was your greatest strength.”

“Your grandfather believed it was your greatest weakness.”

My phone vibrated.

Another message.

This time from an unknown number.

A photo.

Elena.

At the hospital.

But not alone.

A man stood behind her.

A gun visible.

My blood froze.

The caption:

COME ALONE.

My entire body went cold.

Isabella saw my face.

“What happened?”

I showed her.

The room changed instantly.

Daniel Cross looked serious.

“This is a trap.”

“I know.”

“You cannot go.”

I looked at him.

“My sister is there.”

“He wants you angry.”

“He wants you emotional.”

I stared.

“You’re describing exactly what my grandfather wanted.”

Silence.

Then Isabella whispered:

“Adrian…”

I looked at her.

“He succeeded.”

My voice was quiet.

“His final test.”

I walked toward the door.

Daniel blocked me.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“Move.”

“You’ll die.”

“Maybe.”

I stepped closer.

“But Elena won’t.”

He studied me.

Then something unexpected happened.

He moved.

Before I left, Isabella spoke.

“Adrian.”

I stopped.

She removed a small necklace from her neck.

A key hidden inside.

She handed it to me.

“What is this?”

“The last thing your father gave me.”

I looked at her.

“Why give it to me?”

Her eyes filled.

“Because I spent twenty years trying to fix my mistake.”

A pause.

“And because your father was wrong about one thing.”

“What?”

She whispered:

“You were never the weapon.”

“You were always the person who could end the war.”

I looked at the key.

Then walked out.

Because somewhere in that city…

Elena was waiting.

And this time…

May you like

I wasn’t coming as a shadow.

I was coming as her brother.
