Part 9: The Last Secret of Project Aurora

The words stayed in the air.

Like a threat.

Like a warning.

Like a curse.

You may never forgive yourself.

I looked at my father.

The fear in his eyes bothered me more than anything Richard Vale had said.

My father was not afraid of losing money.

He was not afraid of prison.

He was not even afraid of death.

But he was afraid of me seeing the truth.

That meant one thing.

The truth was worse than everything I had already discovered.

“Play the video.”

My voice was calm.

Everyone looked at me.

My father shook his head.

“Adrian.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“I spent twenty years living inside a lie.”

“I watched my sister suffer.”

“I watched my family fall apart.”

I stepped closer.

“I’m done being protected.”

Richard smiled.

“Exactly like your grandfather predicted.”

I turned toward him.

“Don’t say his name like you knew him.”

Richard laughed.

“I knew him better than anyone.”

“Better than your father.”

“Better than you.”

He walked toward the screen.

“Your grandfather didn’t create Project Aurora because he wanted power.”

My expression hardened.

“Then why?”

Richard looked at me.

“Because he saw what was coming.”

The screen turned on.

The old lawyer appeared.

His face was pale.

His hands shaking.

A voice behind the camera spoke.

“Tell him.”

The lawyer looked terrified.

“I can’t.”

A pause.

Then a slap echoed.

Elena gasped.

I felt my entire body tense.

Richard didn’t react.

The lawyer finally whispered:

“Charles Moretti’s father discovered that the family fortune was built on stolen assets.”

Silence.

The lawyer continued:

“Generations of corruption.”

“Manipulation.”

“Hidden crimes.”

My eyes narrowed.

“What does this have to do with me?”

Richard answered.

“Everything.”

The lawyer continued.

“James Moretti wanted to destroy everything.”

“Return the money.”

“Expose the people involved.”

“But he knew one thing.”

The screen showed old documents.

Names.

Families.

Organizations.

Powerful people.

“He knew if he attacked directly…”

“They would kill him.”

The video paused.

Then:

“So he created an heir.”

My blood ran cold.

The room became silent.

The lawyer looked into the camera.

“Adrian Moretti was not chosen to inherit the empire.”

“He was chosen to destroy it.”

Nobody spoke.

I felt something break inside me.

All these years…

I thought my grandfather wanted me to become powerful.

I thought he wanted a successor.

But maybe…

Maybe he wanted a weapon aimed at himself.

A person who could survive the people who built the empire.

Richard watched my reaction.

“Your grandfather knew everyone around him was corrupt.”

“He knew your father was too emotional.”

“He knew your mother was too desperate.”

“He knew Victor wanted money.”

“And he knew Marcus was vulnerable.”

My eyes moved toward my brother.

Marcus looked destroyed.

Richard continued:

“So he created the final piece.”

He pointed at me.

“You.”

I laughed quietly.

A broken laugh.

“So I was still a tool.”

My father immediately said:

“No.”

I looked at him.

“Wasn’t I?”

He had no answer.

Because the truth hurt.

Even when the intention was good.

Even when the goal was justice.

A child used as a solution was still a child used.

Richard stepped closer.

“You were supposed to become exactly like him.”

I looked at him.

“Like my grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“Cold.”

“Strategic.”

“Unbreakable.”

“And then…”

He smiled.

“You ruined everything.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“You loved.”

He shook his head.

“Your grandfather underestimated your father’s influence.”

“He thought Charles would raise a soldier.”

“But Charles raised a human.”

I looked at my father.

For the first time…

I understood.

He didn’t disappear because he didn’t love me.

He disappeared because he loved me too much.

And that made it hurt even more.

Then the lawyer’s video continued.

One final document appeared.

My grandfather’s handwriting.

The last page of Project Aurora.

Richard’s smile faded.

Because he knew what came next.

The lawyer read:

“Final condition.”

“Subject Adrian Moretti must choose.”

I froze.

Choose?

The screen showed the final sentence.

Destroy the empire, even if it destroys your family.

My heart stopped.

Because now I understood.

This wasn’t just about power.

It was about a decision.

The decision my grandfather had been preparing me for my entire life.

My mother stepped forward.

“Adrian.”

I looked at her.

She was crying.

“I’m sorry.”

For once…

She wasn’t trying to control anything.

She was just a mother.

“I should have protected you.”

I looked at her.

“You chose Marcus.”

Her face broke.

“Yes.”

A tear fell.

“Because I thought you were strong enough.”

“And I thought he wasn’t.”

Marcus looked away.

My mother continued:

“I was wrong.”

A loud alarm suddenly started.

Everyone turned.

Richard’s expression changed.

“What did you do?”

I looked at him.

“I didn’t do anything.”

Then Daniel Cross checked his phone.

His face went pale.

“Adrian.”

“What?”

He looked up.

“The entire Moretti network is shutting down.”

Richard stared.

“No.”

Daniel continued:

“The assets.”

“The accounts.”

“The offshore companies.”

“Everything.”

Richard stepped forward.

“How?”

I looked at him.

And suddenly I understood.

My grandfather’s final plan.

The one nobody knew.

The one hidden deeper than Project Aurora.

The key Isabella gave me.

I pulled it out.

A small metal key.

Richard’s face changed.

“That’s impossible.”

“What is it?”

He whispered:

“The master access.”

My father looked at me.

“You found it.”

I nodded slowly.

“My grandfather didn’t leave an heir.”

I looked around.

“At the end…”

“He left a choice.”

I turned to Richard.

“And I choose to end this.”

Richard’s calm expression finally disappeared.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

I stepped forward.

“Yes.”

“I’m destroying everything.”

A pause.

“Exactly like he wanted.”

Outside, sirens approached.

Police.

Investigators.

The final evidence was already released.

Richard Vale had nowhere left to run.

He looked around the room.

At all of us.

At the family he tried to break.

Then he looked at me.

“You think this makes you free?”

I answered:

“No.”

I looked at Elena.

At my father.

At Marcus.

At the people who remained.

“This makes me responsible.”

As Richard was taken away, Marcus stood quietly.

Broken.

But different.

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

The old Marcus would never have said it.

I believed him.

I nodded.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But a beginning.

Later that night, my father and I stood outside the old estate.

The place where everything began.

“You hate me?”

He asked.

I looked at him.

A long time passed.

“I did.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“But now?”

I looked at the house.

The secrets.

The pain.

The history.

“I don’t know.”

He accepted that.

Then he smiled sadly.

“That’s fair.”

After a moment, he said:

“I missed a lot.”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“But you’re here now.”

His eyes filled.

And for the first time in twenty years…

My father cried.

Not as a powerful man.

Not as a survivor.

Just as my father.

May you like

And somehow…

That was enough.
