Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By 3:00 AM, Ridgeorn Hill was surrounded by black SUVs, flashing red and blue lights, and federal agents dressed in dark tactical gear.

The rain had turned into a full-scale deluge, battering the high slate roofs of the mansion. In the grand study, Federal Special Agent Sarah Jenkins sat across from Daniel, reviewing the high-definition security logs retrieved from the server room. On the desk lay the empty glass ampoule, sealed inside a biohazard container.

"The compound is a military-grade neurotoxin," Agent Jenkins said, her face grim under the green banker's lamp light. "It's manufactured exclusively in private facilities in Eastern Europe. Buying something like this requires at least two million dollars in un-traceable cryptocurrency and high-level cartel contacts."

"Marcus Witfield," Daniel stated flatly, standing near the fireplace, a glass of plain tap water untouched in his hand. "My cousin. He owns fifteen percent of Witfield International. If I die without a direct heir, his preference shares convert into absolute voting control of the parent board."

"Thomas Vance’s confession points directly to Marcus's private legal counsel," Jenkins noted, writing on her digital pad. "We've already issued an emergency federal arrest warrant for Marcus Witfield. But Daniel... a man who spends two million dollars to acquire a banned chemical weapon doesn't stop because his primary asset was compromised."

"I know," Daniel looked toward the doorway.

In the adjacent sitting room, Elena sat on a velvet sofa, holding a sleeping Mia wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket Daniel had brought down from his own bedroom. The little girl’s face was peaceful, her small chest rising and falling in rhythmic, quiet breaths, completely unaware that she had just ignited a war between two multi-billion-dollar empires.

"They need to leave," Agent Jenkins advised, gesturing toward the sitting room. "We can put Elena Cruz and her daughter into federal witness protection immediately. They are key witnesses to the handling of the evidence."

"No," Daniel said firmly.

Jenkins raised an eyebrow. "Mr. Witfield, keeping them near you puts them in extreme danger. Marcus has private security contractors on his payroll—men who don't care about federal warrants."

"Witness protection means putting them in a dingy motel in Ohio with fake names, surrounded by federal guards who don't know sign language and don't care about them," Daniel said, his eyes fixed on the sleeping girl. "My cousin wants me dead. As long as I am alive, he will come for me. If Elena and Mia are hidden away by the government, Marcus’s men will hunt them down to eliminate the only witness who saw where the ampoule was hidden."

He turned back to face Agent Jenkins, his eyes cold and filled with iron resolve.

"They stay here," Daniel declared. "I am converting Ridgeorn Hill into a fortress tonight. I have forty private security officers arriving at dawn. I have armored vehicles, private medical staff, and the best legal team in North America. They will be safer in this house than anywhere else on earth."

Agent Jenkins stared at him for a long moment, reading the unyielding determination in his jaw. She let out a heavy sigh, closing her pad. "If Marcus realizes his plan failed, he won't wait for the board meeting on Friday. He will move tonight or tomorrow."

"Let him come," Daniel whispered, his voice dropping into a register of quiet, terrifying authority. "I've spent eleven years waiting for the man who murdered my parents to show his face. I won't run from him now."

At 4:30 AM, in a glass penthouse overlooking the Atlanta financial district, Marcus Witfield stood by a floor-to-ceiling window, holding a glass of Scotch.

His phone buzzed on the glass coffee table behind him. He picked it up smoothly, tapping the encrypted receiver.

"Is it done?" Marcus asked, his tone casual, as if asking about the morning weather.

"The kitchen camera feed went dark twenty minutes ago," a distorted voice replied through the speaker. "Thomas was compromised. Federal agents are at Ridgeorn Hill right now. A hazmat team just pulled an ampoule from the estate."

Marcus’s hand tightened around his glass until his knuckles turned white. A dark, ugly vein throbbed at his temple.

"Thomas failed?" Marcus hissed. "How could he fail?! The wine was decanted! Daniel drinks from that glass every single night like clockwork!"

"The housekeeper's child," the voice reported flatly. "The deaf girl. She saw Thomas hide the ampoule in the lining of the trash bin three days ago. She signed it to Witfield before he touched the glass."

Marcus smashed his Scotch glass against the marble floor. Shards of crystal and amber liquor exploded across the white rug.

"A three-year-old mute brat?" Marcus roared, his face contorted in psychotic rage. "A fucking deaf maid's kid destroyed a two-million-dollar operation?!"

"Federal warrants have been issued for your arrest, Marcus," the voice warned. "You have less than six hours before federal marshals freeze your domestic accounts and secure your residence."

Marcus stood amidst the shattered crystal, his breathing ragged, his eyes flashing with a terrifying, unhinged madness.

"Cancel the board meeting," Marcus ordered, his voice dropping into a low, murderous rasp. "Call Viktor and his crew. Tell them to take the heavy units from the warehouse in Savannah."

May you like

"Viktor's team is for offshore operations, Marcus. If you hit Ridgeorn Hill directly, it's a war zone."

"It's already a war zone!" Marcus screamed into the phone. "If Daniel lives until sunrise, I go to federal prison for life! I want that house flattened! I want Daniel dead, I want Thomas dead, and I want that little girl’s hands cut off and brought to me!"
