Chapter 6 - The River of Shadows

The narrow archway was flooded with six inches of cold, muddy water that sloshed against Daniel’s leather boots as they moved forward in the dark.

The air grew colder, carrying the sharp, crisp scent of fresh river air and damp pine needles. After ten minutes of continuous walking through the dark tunnel, a soft, pale crescent of morning light appeared at the end of the stone passageway.

They emerged beneath the arching stone foundations of the Ridgeorn Bridge, completely hidden from the main estate by thick thickets of wild blackberry bushes and towering weeping willows.

Fifty yards away, across a carpet of fallen autumn leaves, sat a matte-black Ford F-150 truck—Daniel’s private off-grid vehicle, equipped with satellite communications and reinforced run-flat tires.

"The truck is clean," Daniel murmured, scanning the tree line with his specialized infrared optics attachment on his pistol. "No heat signatures within two hundred yards."

He ushered Elena and Mia quickly across the wet grass, unlocking the heavy truck doors with an encrypted proximity keycard.

He lifted Mia into the rear cab, buckling her securely into a heavy child safety seat he had instructed his team to install two days ago. Elena scrambled in beside her, her face exhausted, her hands shaking as she pulled a wool blanket over her daughter’s legs.

Daniel climbed into the driver's seat, hit the ignition button, and the heavy V8 engine roared to life with a deep, powerful rumble.

He didn't turn on the headlights. He navigated the narrow dirt logging track through the dense forest using black-out night-vision monitors mounted on the dashboard, driving three miles through the wilderness before hitting the primary county highway.

Once on the asphalt, he slammed his foot on the accelerator, the heavy truck surging forward at eighty miles per hour toward downtown Atlanta.

He pulled his encrypted satellite phone from the dash, placing it on speaker mode.

"Robert," Daniel called his senior legal counsel, Robert Sterling.

"Daniel?!" Robert’s voice erupted through the speaker, filled with immense relief. "Thank God! Victor’s team managed to push Marcus’s mercenaries out of the main house, but they said you disappeared into the drainage tunnels! Where are you?!"

"I have Elena and Mia," Daniel reported smoothly, his eyes glued to the highway mirrors. "We are en route to the Federal Courthouse in Atlanta. Is Agent Jenkins there?"

"She’s in the United States Attorney’s office right now," Robert said quickly. "Marcus Witfield’s legal team just filed an emergency motion with the State Supreme Court to freeze all your corporate assets, claiming you’ve been incapacitated or killed in a terrorist attack at your home!"

Daniel let out a harsh, cold laugh. "He's trying to claim my estate before my body even cools down."

"He’s arriving at the Federal Courthouse at ten o'clock with his full executive board," Robert warned. "He intends to execute the emergency succession clause in front of the press and the federal judge!"

"Tell Agent Jenkins to hold the main rotunda," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp, lethal register. "I will be there in twenty minutes. And tell her to bring three squads of federal marshals."

He glanced into the rearview mirror.

In the back seat, Mia had curled up against her mother’s side. She held a single yellow crayon in her small hand, quietly drawing a warm, bright sun over a long, dark road on the back of a paper napkin.

Daniel looked down at his own hands on the steering wheel—the hands that had spent eleven years cold, detached, and empty.

"Marcus took my parents," Daniel whispered to the empty air of the cab. "He tried to take my life. But today... I take everything he has ever touched."
