Chapter 4 - The Fortress on the Hill

By 7:00 AM, the storm had cleared, leaving a pale, icy blue sky over the Georgia countryside.

Ridgeorn Hill no longer looked like a private residence. High-definition infrared cameras were being mounted along the stone perimeter walls every twenty feet. Four heavy armored SUVs were parked across the main iron gates, manned by private security officers carrying tactical gear and automatic carbines.

Inside the mansion’s central command room—a reinforced concrete basement vault that Daniel had built eight years ago—Victor Vance, his head of security, was reviewing the tactical grid map on six large screens.

"We have thirty-six armed operators on site, Mr. Witfield," Victor reported, pointing to green dots surrounding the property map. "The perimeter wire is electrified, the ballistic shutters on all ground-floor windows are locked down, and we have a private helicopter on ten-minute standby at the south pad."

Daniel stood behind him, wearing a dark tactical sweater over his dress shirt. Beside him stood Elena, her face pale with exhaustion, holding Mia’s hand.

Mia was completely unfazed by the weapons or the tactical screens. She was wearing her yellow dress, holding a box of fresh crayons Daniel had ordered brought up from the local store by one of his guards. She sat on a small stool in the corner of the vault, carefully drawing a picture of a giant shield over a big house.

"Elena," Daniel turned to her, his voice softening completely. "You don't have to stay down here. There are bedrooms on the upper levels with ballistic glass."

Elena looked at Daniel, her dark eyes steady and clear. "We are staying near you, Mr. Witfield. Mia doesn't feel afraid when she sees you."

Daniel looked down at the little girl. "She saved my life, Elena. I owe both of you everything I own."

"You don't owe us money, Mr. Witfield," Elena said softly, stepping closer. "For three weeks, you left your study door open so my daughter could watch you work. You learned sign language so you could say hello to a girl most people ignore. You gave her respect. In our world, that is worth far more than money."

Before Daniel could respond, a red light began flashing violently on the primary central monitor.

A loud, piercing alarm chimed through the concrete vault.

"Breach!" Victor barked, stepping forward and grabbing his radio headset. "Perimeter Gate North! We have heavy vehicle impact!"

On the main monitor screen, a massive black armored construction truck slammed at fifty miles per hour directly into the heavy iron gates of Ridgeorn Hill. The iron bars sheared off with a thunderous crash of metal, sparks exploding into the morning air.

Behind the construction truck rolled three black passenger vans with blacked-out windows.

Dozens of men dressed in tactical gear, carrying military assault rifles and heavy breaching tools, poured out of the vans, opening fire on the gatehouse guards.

"They're using heavy weapons!" Victor shouted into his radio. "Team Alpha, fall back to the courtyard! Engage under Suppressive Fire Rule 4! Protect the main hall!"

The sound of heavy gunfire echoed faintly through the reinforced concrete walls of the vault—a low, rhythmic thumping that vibrated through the floorboards.

Elena gasped, instinctively pulling Mia into her arms and dropping to the floor behind the central console.

Mia clung to her mother's neck. She didn't hear the deafening roar of the rifles, nor the explosions of tear gas canisters echoing across the lawns outside. But she felt the deep, rhythmic vibrations in the concrete beneath her knees.

She looked up at Daniel, her big dark eyes wide, but not hysterical.

She raised her small hand, touching her index finger to her thumb, forming a small circle, then extending her three other fingers upward.

Quiet.

Then she pointed her finger toward the air ventilation duct near the ceiling of the vault.

Daniel looked up at the duct.

"Victor!" Daniel snapped, grabbing the security director by his shoulder. "Check the secondary access tunnels! The old wine cellar duct beneath the east wing!"

May you like

Victor’s eyes widened in realization. "The wine cellar... the historical blueprints! It connects directly to the ventilation shaft of this vault!"

"They aren't just hitting the front gates," Daniel realized, his blood running cold. "The attack at the gate is a distraction. Marcus’s primary assault team is already inside the house through the old underground utility tunnels!"
