Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The air inside the grand ballroom of the Calloway estate was thick with the scent of white roses, expensive perfume, and betrayal.
I lay on the cold imported marble, my hands desperately shielding the high, round bump of my belly. Blood mixed with blue buttercream and white fondant, staining the front of my silk dress. The pain in my abdomen was a deep, terrifying pulse that throbbed with every heartbeat, but the coldness spreading through my chest was far worse.
Around me, seventy guests stood frozen in stunned silence. High-society friends, politicians, corporate board members, and family acquaintances stared at the ruin on the floor.
Two minutes ago, this room had been a vision of pastel perfection. A ten-foot tower of artisanal cupcakes spelled out WELCOME BABY HUNTER. Silver and gold balloons floated against the high coffered ceilings. White linen tables were piled high with hand-wrapped gifts from Tiffany’s and Neiman Marcus.
Now, half the cupcake tower lay smashed beneath my ribs.
"Look at you," Ryan said, his voice flat, devoid of a single shred of human warmth. He stood over me, pulling a silk handkerchief from his breast pocket to wipe a microscopic smudge of blue frosting from the sleeve of his Tom Ford suit. "Always dramatic. Always making a scene."
Beside him, Savannah Pierce tightened her manicured hand around his forearm. Her gold sequin dress caught the light of the crystal chandeliers, sparkling like fresh armor. She couldn't have been more than twenty-two—the exact age I was when I first met Ryan at a charity gala six years ago. Her lips were painted a shiny, wet red, curved into a triumphant pout that didn't reach her cold blue eyes.
"She ruined the cake, Ryan," Savannah whined softly, leaning her head against his shoulder. "I told you she’d act like a lunatic if we came. She’s just jealous because everybody knows who really belongs here now."
"You brought your mistress to my baby shower," I whispered. My voice was raspy, scraped raw from the scream I had let out when Ryan walked through those double oak doors holding her hand. "You brought her into our home..."
"Our home?" Ryan’s mother, Eleanor Calloway, stepped forward. She wore a ice-blue Chanel suit, her diamond necklace flashing like icicles around her wrinkled throat. She held a crystal flute of vintage Dom Pérignon in her right hand. She didn't look at me with pity. She looked at me like a stain on her expensive rug. "Don't delude yourself, Vanessa. You were a temporary arrangement. A charity case Ryan brought home from a mid-tier accounting firm because he thought you were humble enough to stay quiet."
Eleanor raised her champagne glass high into the air, turning her back on me to face the horrified crowd.
"Friends!" Eleanor announced, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "I apologize for the sudden disruption. But today is a day of truth. My son has finally chosen a partner worthy of the Calloway name. A woman capable of giving this family a real future!"
Charles Calloway—the formidable billionaire CEO of Calloway Financial Holdings, a man whose picture had graced the cover of Forbes three times—stepped up beside his wife. He adjusted his gold cufflinks, his face carved from cold granite.
"Enough with the theatrics, Vanessa," Charles said, looking down at me with utter contempt. "You were always too unstable for this family. You lack the pedigree, the composure, and the intellect to raise a Calloway heir. Get up, sign the non-disclosure agreements my lawyers sent your email this morning, and walk out gracefully before I have security throw you onto the street."
Then, Eleanor began to clap.
Slowly. Rhythmically. Coldly.
Charles joined her seconds later. A few spineless board members, eager to stay on the billionaire’s good side, hesitantly joined in.
Two wealthy monsters applauding while their eight-month-pregnant daughter-in-law bled across their marble floor.
"You're pathetic, Vanessa," Ryan sneered, reaching out to stroke Savannah's waist. Savannah laid a possessive hand over her own flat stomach, smirking down at me. "Savannah is carrying a real child. A healthy boy. Not some frail miracle baby that took three years of IVF just to barely take root. You're worthless. You always have been."
"Ryan, stop!" a voice shrieked from the back of the room.
My twenty-year-old sister, Lily, broke away from the catering staff station. She was wearing her black waitress uniform—she had taken a server shift for the event just to help me manage the party. Tears streamed down her face as she tried to rush toward me.
"Vanessa! Oh my god, Vanessa!" Lily cried out.
Before she could reach my side, two heavy-set private security guards stepped into her path, grabbing her arms and shoving her backward.
"Keep her back," Charles ordered flatly without turning around. "Trash belongs with trash."
Everyone expected me to weep. Everyone expected me to beg Ryan to remember the six years we had spent together, the late nights I spent helping him write his corporate speeches, the months of painful hormone injections I endured just to conceive the baby kicking weakly inside me.
Instead, I let out a soft, raspy breath.
And I smiled.
A small droplet of blood slipped from the corner of my mouth, trailing down my chin. I stared directly up into Ryan’s eyes.
For the first time all afternoon, the arrogant smirk on my husband's face faltered. A flicker of genuine, primal fear crossed his eyes.
Because he saw it. The breaking of the meek, submissive, quiet wife he thought he had broken years ago.
I slowly turned my wrist, looking at my shattered watch resting in the blue buttercream beside my hip.
The digital hands read exactly 1:59 p.m.
"Why are you looking at your watch?" Ryan demanded, his voice dropping into a sharp, nervous register. "What’s wrong with you? Get her out of here, security!"
"It's 1:59, Ryan," I murmured, my voice chillingly steady despite the agony radiating through my body.
"What?"
May you like
"Two o'clock was the deadline," I said, leaning back against the shattered gift table, raising my chin high. "I told them to wait until two."
Before Ryan could open his mouth to call me insane, the massive oak doors of the Calloway estate didn't just open—they were blown off their brass hinges with a deafening CRACK!
