Chapter 7 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

Six months later.
The high-rise headquarters of Vance Global Management in Midtown Manhattan hummed with productive energy.
The sleek marble lobby, once decorated with gold-framed portraits of Charles and Ryan Calloway, was now lined with modern art, bright glass walls, and lush green plants. The corporate culture of fear, backstabbing, and elitism had been completely dismantled, replaced by a transparent, highly efficient financial firm led by top-tier forensic accountants and ethical investment strategists.
I stood in the corner office on the 45th floor, holding a cup of warm chamomile tea, watching the snow fall gently over Central Park.
A soft knock sounded at the open oak door.
"Ms. Vance?"
I turned around. Lily walked into the office, holding a tablet and a sleek black stroller. Sitting inside the stroller, wearing a tiny bear-eared fleece onesie, was seven-month-old Hunter. He was chubby, healthy, with big, curious blue eyes and a crown of soft blonde hair.
"Look who just woke up from his nap," Lily smiled, pushing the stroller toward my desk.
"Hey, my little warrior," I cooed, dropping to my knees beside the stroller. Hunter babbled happily, kicking his little feet, reaching his tiny hands out to grab my fingers.
"The Q3 earnings report just came in from the auditing team," Lily said, handing me the tablet. "Vance Global Management has officially cleared a thirty percent increase in net revenue since the restructuring. The board is thrilled."
"Good," I said, scanning the numbers. "Make sure the ten percent profit-sharing allocation is distributed to the lower-level staff before the holidays."
"Already done," Lily grinned. "Oh, and you have a visitor waiting in the lobby."
I raised an eyebrow. "Who?"
"Agent Vance," Lily replied. "Well... former Agent Vance."
Two minutes later, Sarah Vance walked into my office.
She looked entirely different from the tactical-vest-wearing federal agent who had raided the Calloway estate six months ago. She wore an elegant beige wool coat, her long silver-blonde hair styled down, carrying a leather briefcase.
"Sarah!" I stood up, offering her a warm hug. "What brings you to Midtown? And what do you mean 'former agent'?"
Sarah smiled, taking a seat in the leather armchair across from my desk.
"I officially retired from the Bureau last Friday, Vanessa," Sarah revealed, taking a sip of the tea Lily offered her. "Twenty years of hunting white-collar sociopaths was enough for me. I decided it was time for a career change."
"Really?" I asked, intrigued. "What’s the next move?"
Sarah reached into her coat pocket and set a sleek black business card onto my desk.
It read: VANCE & ASSOCIATES: PRIVATE FORENSIC INVESTIGATIONS.
"I opened my own corporate risk firm," Sarah explained, her eyes sparkling with sharp intelligence. "We help corporate boards identify internal fraud, embezzlement, and toxic executive behavior before it ruins company assets."
She looked across the desk at me, her expression turning serious.
"And I came here today to offer you a partnership, Vanessa. You have the sharpest forensic mind I've ever seen in my twenty years with the FBI. Together, we could build an agency that protects innocent people from predators like the Calloways."
I looked at the black business card resting on my desk. Then I looked at my sister, Lily, who was playing peek-a-boo with Hunter in the corner of the office.
Six years ago, I was a broke, quiet accountant who thought she had to accept crumbs from a wealthy family just to survive.
Now, I was the CEO of a multi-million-dollar financial firm, a mother to a healthy baby boy, and a survivor who had dismantled an empire.

A deep, profound sense of peace washed over my heart.
"When do we start?" I smiled.
