Chapter 10 - The Master of Her Fate

Late that evening, after the guests had departed and the stars had filled the deep blue summer sky, I sat on the quiet stone terrace overlooking the ocean.
Hunter was fast asleep in his nursery upstairs, monitored by a loving, dedicated nanny and our top-tier security team.
The ocean waves crashed gently against the shore below, a rhythmic, soothing sound that filled the peaceful night.
I held a warm cup of tea in my hands, resting my feet on the teak patio chair, watching the moonlight dance across the dark water.
My phone on the table buzzed softly.
It was an automated alert from the Federal Bureau of Prisons notification system.
I tapped the screen.
NOTIFICATION: INMATE #489201 (RYAN CALLOWAY) HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED TO FCI OTISVILLE HIGH-SECURITY FACILITY. VISITATION PRIVILEGES REMAIN PERMANENTLY SUSPENDED.
I stared at the notification for a brief second.
Two years ago, a message like that would have triggered a wave of anxiety, a pulse of fear, or a memory of the pain that had shattered my life.
Now?
I felt absolutely nothing.
Ryan Calloway, Savannah Pierce, Charles, and Eleanor were ghosts from a previous life—small, pathetic figures locked away in the shadows of their own creation. They no longer held power over my name, my child, or my future.
I closed the notification, wiped the screen clean, and turned off the phone.
I reached up, touching the delicate gold pendant hanging around my neck. It was a simple disk engraved with Hunter's birthdate and a tiny coordinate map of the ocean view before me.
I stood up, walking to the edge of the stone balcony, leaning against the warm railing, breathing in the crisp, clean salt air.
I was no longer the quiet, broken accountant begging for approval in a house built on blood.
I was a mother. I was a leader. I was the architect of my own justice.

And as I looked out over the vast, endless ocean stretching into the dark, bright horizon, I knew that for the first time in my life...
I was completely, beautifully free.
