Part 7: The Secret My Mother Buried

The words kept repeating in my head.

"You are the missing piece."

I stood there in the middle of the airport, holding my son, surrounded by police officers, strangers, and the man who had destroyed my life.

And I still didn't understand.

"What do you mean, Victor?"

My voice shook.

"What does my mother have to do with any of this?"

Victor smiled.

Not because he had won.

Because he believed he finally had control.

"Your mother was smarter than everyone."

He slowly lowered the weapon.

"She knew people like me would come after her research."

"She knew power always attracts monsters."

Detective Harris kept his eyes on him.

"Put the weapon down and keep talking."

Victor laughed.

"You still think this is about a crime."

He looked around.

"This is about history."

Nathan stepped forward.

"Don't listen to him."

Victor turned.

"Funny."

"You spent years hiding the truth from Maria."

"And now you want to protect her?"

Nathan's jaw tightened.

Because Victor was right.

He had lied.

But he had also tried to save us.

And that was the part that made everything harder.

I looked at Nathan.

"Where is my mother's research?"

Nathan hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

He knew.

"You know."

He nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"Where?"

He looked at Lucas.

Then answered:

"Inside him."

My heart dropped.

"What?"

Nathan explained.

Before my mother died, she knew Victor would try to take her work.

So she destroyed every copy.

Every file.

Every computer.

Everything.

Or at least...

That's what everyone believed.

But she created one final backup.

A biological backup.

Not a file.

Not a hard drive.

Something Victor could never steal.

A genetic key.

"Your mother designed the research so only a descendant could activate it."

Nathan said.

"Someone with her DNA."

I stared at him.

"And that's Lucas?"

Nathan nodded.

"Partly."

Victor interrupted.

"You're still missing the point."

Everyone looked at him.

"Lucas carries the key."

"But Maria..."

He smiled.

"Maria carries the password."

The words made no sense.

Then I remembered something.

Something I hadn't thought about in years.

A necklace.

A small silver necklace my mother gave me before she died.

She told me:

"Never lose this. It belongs to your family."

I touched my neck.

The necklace was still there.

The one thing I always wore.

The one thing nobody could take.

Victor's eyes followed the movement.

He smiled.

"There it is."

I stepped back.

"You knew about this?"

"Of course."

"Your mother hid the final activation sequence inside that necklace."

Detective Harris immediately moved.

"Where is the necklace?"

I stared at him.

"I'm wearing it."

His expression changed.

"We need to secure it."

But before he could move...

Victor laughed.

"Too late."

The airport lights suddenly went out.

Complete darkness.

People screamed.

Emergency alarms started.

For several seconds...

Nobody knew what was happening.

Then the lights returned.

Victor was gone.

The police searched immediately.

The exits were blocked.

The airport was surrounded.

But Victor had disappeared.

Again.

Everyone was furious.

Especially Detective Harris.

"He planned this."

Nathan looked around.

"He always does."

Then Harris noticed something.

On the floor.

Near where Victor stood.

A small device.

A recording.

He picked it up.

Pressed play.

Victor's voice filled the terminal.

"Maria."

"If you're hearing this, you already know the truth."

"You are going to come find me."

"Not because I force you."

"Because you want answers."

The recording continued.

"Your mother's final research is hidden where everything started."

A pause.

Then:

"The place where she trusted the wrong person."

I felt cold.

Because I knew that place.

My childhood home.

The old family house.

The house that had been abandoned after my mother died.

Nathan looked at me.

"You can't go there."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

His expression changed.

"Because that's where Victor killed your mother."

The world stopped.

I had always been told my mother died from illness.

A sudden medical problem.

A tragedy.

But now...

Everything I believed was collapsing.

"My mother was murdered?"

Nathan nodded.

"Yes."

"By Victor?"

He hesitated.

"No."

I froze.

"What do you mean, no?"

Nathan looked terrified.

"Victor was there."

"But he wasn't the one who did it."

Detective Harris stepped closer.

"Who was?"

Nathan looked at the necklace around my neck.

Then quietly said:

"The person your mother trusted most."

I couldn't breathe.

"My father?"

Nathan shook his head.

"No."

"Someone who stayed in your life."

Someone who knew my family.

Someone who knew Lucas.

Someone who had helped hide the truth for years.

Then Nathan said the name.

And my entire world broke.

"Your uncle Daniel."

My uncle.

My mother's brother.

The man who comforted me after her death.

The man who helped arrange the funeral.

The man who always said:

"Your mother loved you more than anything."

The same man who disappeared shortly after Lucas was taken.

The same man nobody had questioned.

Detective Harris immediately called his team.

But the answer came before anyone spoke.

A message appeared on Harris's phone.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

"You're too late."

Attached:

A photograph.

My blood turned cold.

It showed my childhood home.

And standing in front of it...

Was Uncle Daniel.

Holding a folder.

Waiting.

And beside him...

Was Lucas's old baby blanket.

The one that disappeared the day my son was taken.

Daniel wasn't running.

He wanted us to come.

Because he had the final piece of the truth.

And he knew exactly how to make me choose.

May you like
