Part 8: The House Where the Lies Began

The old family house stood exactly as I remembered.

The white paint had faded.

The garden my mother once cared for was overgrown.

The wooden gate still made the same creaking sound when it opened.

But everything felt different now.

Because I wasn't coming home.

I was walking into the place where my entire life had been built on lies.

Detective Harris insisted on surrounding the property.

"No one goes inside alone."

I nodded.

But my eyes stayed fixed on the second-floor window.

The room where my mother used to work.

The room where she spent countless nights writing notes, studying, and telling me:

"Knowledge is powerful, Maria. But only if it is used for good."

I never understood those words.

Not until now.

Nathan stood beside me.

"I'm sorry."

I looked at him.

"For what?"

"For bringing you back here."

I shook my head.

"No."

My voice was quiet.

"I'm tired of running from the truth."

The front door was unlocked.

That scared everyone.

A person hiding would lock the door.

A person waiting...

Would leave it open.

We entered slowly.

Dust covered everything.

The furniture was exactly where it had been years ago.

Family photos lined the walls.

My childhood.

My mother.

My uncle Daniel.

All the memories I trusted.

All the people I loved.

Then I saw it.

A photo of my mother and Daniel.

They were standing in the garden.

Smiling.

Happy.

A brother and sister who trusted each other.

Before everything fell apart.

"Maria."

Detective Harris called.

"Look at this."

He stood in the old study.

My mother's study.

The room nobody entered after she died.

Because Daniel always said:

"Your mother wanted her work left untouched."

But now...

The room had been disturbed.

A hidden panel behind the bookshelf was open.

Inside was a small metal box.

My hands shook.

I knew immediately.

This was what Victor wanted.

What everyone had fought over.

Detective Harris opened it carefully.

Inside:

Old documents.

A flash drive.

And a letter.

My mother's handwriting.

I couldn't breathe.

After all these years...

I was holding something she wrote.

The letter began:

"My dearest Maria."

Tears filled my eyes.

"If you are reading this, then I was right."

"Someone I trusted betrayed me."

Everyone became silent.

I continued reading.

"The research was never about power."

"It was created to help families understand inherited diseases."

"But Daniel believed it could make him rich."

My hands froze.

Daniel.

My uncle.

The letter continued.

"He sold information to Victor."

"When I discovered what he had done, I tried to stop them."

"Daniel begged me to stay quiet."

"I refused."

A tear fell onto the paper.

"That night, he came to my house."

"He wasn't alone."

"Victor was with him."

I looked up.

Nathan's face was pale.

Detective Harris continued reading.

"I know they believe they erased everything."

"But I created one final protection."

"I placed the activation key where only Maria would carry it."

The necklace.

Then came the final sentence.

The one that destroyed me.

"Daniel was not the only person who betrayed me."

The room went silent.

There was more.

"My daughter..."

I stopped.

My hands started shaking.

"I never told you because I wanted to protect you."

"But the truth is..."

The paper ended.

The rest was missing.

Torn away.

Someone had removed the final part.

Suddenly...

A sound came from upstairs.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Everyone turned.

Detective Harris raised his weapon.

"Show yourself!"

No answer.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

A voice I knew.

A voice that belonged to my past.

"You're still just like your mother, Maria."

I froze.

Because the person standing at the top of the stairs...

Was Uncle Daniel.

He looked older.

Tired.

But calm.

Almost peaceful.

As if he had been waiting years for this moment.

"You killed her."

My voice broke.

Daniel looked down.

"No."

He said.

"I failed her."

"That's not the same."

He slowly walked downstairs.

"You don't understand."

"I loved your mother."

I laughed bitterly.

"People don't kill people they love."

Daniel's expression changed.

"Sometimes they do."

Detective Harris stepped forward.

"Daniel Torres."

"You are under arrest."

Daniel didn't run.

He didn't fight.

He simply looked at the necklace around my neck.

"You found it."

"Found what?"

He smiled sadly.

"The reason Victor could never win."

He looked at Lucas.

"The reason everyone wanted him."

My arms tightened around my son.

"Stay away from him."

Daniel stopped.

Then whispered:

"I never wanted Lucas."

Everyone froze.

"What?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Victor did."

"I wanted the research."

Nathan stepped forward.

"You helped him."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"But I was never his partner."

"Then what were you?"

Daniel looked toward the hidden room.

And answered:

"The man who tried to fix what he destroyed."

Nobody understood.

Until Daniel reached into his coat.

He pulled out a second letter.

Old.

Folded.

Protected.

"I found this after your mother died."

He looked at me.

"And I kept it because I was ashamed."

He handed it to me.

My mother's handwriting again.

This time...

The missing part.

I opened it.

The first sentence made my heart stop.

"Maria, if Daniel gives you this letter, it means he finally chose the truth over himself."

I looked at Daniel.

Confused.

My mother had written:

"The person who betrayed me was not Daniel."

"Daniel was manipulated."

"The real person who caused everything..."

The letter continued.

And the name appeared.

A name nobody expected.

A name that made Daniel break down.

"Your father."

The man I believed had died years ago.

The man whose memory I barely remembered.

Was alive.

May you like

And according to my mother's letter...

He was the one who started everything.
