Part 9: The Father Who Was Buried Alive

The room stopped feeling real.

I read the words again.

Then again.

Because my mind refused to accept them.

Your father.

A man I remembered only through old photographs.

A man everyone told me had died.

A man whose funeral I supposedly attended as a child.

"No."

The word escaped my mouth.

"No, that's not possible."

Daniel looked away.

Nathan looked at the floor.

And their silence hurt more than any answer.

Detective Harris took the letter from my hands.

"Are you saying Maria's father is alive?"

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"Where is he?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Because before he could...

A voice came from behind us.

"Right here."

Everyone turned.

The front door opened.

A man stood there.

Older.

Gray hair.

A face marked by years.

But the eyes...

The eyes were familiar.

Too familiar.

I stared.

My body went cold.

Because I knew.

Before anyone introduced him.

Before anyone explained.

I knew.

"Dad?"

The word came out like a child's voice.

A voice from the past.

A voice I hadn't used in decades.

The man looked at me.

Tears filled his eyes.

"Maria."

I stepped back.

"No."

I shook my head.

"You died."

He swallowed.

"I let you believe that."

The pain was immediate.

All those years.

All those memories.

All those questions.

My father had been alive.

And he had chosen to stay away.

Detective Harris moved between us.

"Identify yourself."

The man looked at him.

"My name is Thomas Torres."

He looked at me.

"I am Maria's father."

"Why?"

My voice cracked.

"Why would you do that?"

Thomas lowered his head.

"Because I was a coward."

He explained.

Years ago, before my mother died, she discovered Victor's plans.

She also discovered my father had been involved.

Not as a criminal.

At first.

Thomas worked in the same field.

He helped develop the early research systems.

But unlike my mother...

He became obsessed with the possibilities.

Money.

Power.

Influence.

"Your mother wanted to destroy the project."

Thomas said.

"I wanted to control it."

"So you betrayed her."

He nodded.

"Yes."

My chest hurt.

The people I loved.

My mother.

My uncle.

My father.

All connected to the same nightmare.

Thomas continued.

"But when I realized what Victor wanted to do..."

"I tried to stop him."

Daniel looked at him.

"You were too late."

Thomas nodded.

"I know."

The night my mother died...

Thomas was there.

Daniel was there.

Victor was there.

Everything I believed about that night was false.

"What happened?"

I asked.

Thomas closed his eyes.

"Your mother confronted me."

"She knew I had helped create something dangerous."

"She knew Victor was using it."

He looked at the old study.

"She told me she would expose everyone."

"Even me."

"And then?"

Thomas whispered:

"Daniel came in."

Everyone looked at Daniel.

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

"I went there to warn her."

"I wanted to help."

Thomas nodded.

"Then Victor arrived."

The argument became violent.

Victor wanted the research.

My mother refused.

She tried to destroy the final files.

Then...

She hid the last key.

"Where?"

I asked.

Thomas looked at the necklace.

"Inside something she knew would never leave you."

The necklace.

"But she knew I was a child."

Thomas nodded.

"She knew."

"Because she trusted that one day..."

"You would find the truth."

Suddenly Detective Harris received a message.

He read it.

His face changed.

"What?"

He looked up.

"Victor escaped custody."

Everyone froze.

Thomas immediately reacted.

"He knows."

"Knows what?"

Thomas looked at the flash drive.

"The final location."

Daniel stepped forward.

"There is another part."

Everyone looked at him.

"The research isn't stored here."

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

"It's already been moved."

"Where?"

Daniel looked at Maria.

"Your mother's grave."

My heart stopped.

"My mother's grave?"

Daniel nodded.

"She buried the final evidence there."

Before anyone could respond...

The lights went out.

Again.

A familiar voice came through the darkness.

Victor.

"Enough family reunions."

Everyone froze.

The sound came from speakers hidden in the house.

He had been there.

Listening.

Watching.

"Maria."

His voice was calm.

"You finally know the truth."

"Now come to your mother's grave."

Detective Harris shouted:

"Victor Kane!"

No answer.

Only Victor's voice.

"Bring Lucas."

My blood ran cold.

"No."

Victor continued.

"Because without the child..."

"The research stays locked forever."

The doors suddenly slammed shut.

The old house shook.

Someone had locked us inside.

Then smoke began filling the hallway.

Panic spread.

Everyone moved.

Detective Harris broke a window.

Nathan grabbed Lucas.

Daniel searched for another exit.

Thomas stood frozen.

I looked at him.

"Help us!"

And for the first time...

My father moved.

Not as a scientist.

Not as a man hiding secrets.

As a father.

He led us through a hidden passage behind the study.

A passage my mother built years ago.

A way out.

As we escaped into the night...

I looked back at the house.

The place where my family lost everything.

But one thing remained.

Victor wanted Lucas.

He wanted the research.

He wanted control.

And he was waiting at my mother's grave.

Because he believed that was where the story would end.

He was wrong.

Because he forgot something.

My mother had always been one step ahead.

And she left one final message.

Not for Victor.

Not for my father.

Not for anyone else.

May you like

For me.

And I was finally ready to hear it.
