PART 14 The Man Who Never Died

The door opened slowly.
Too slowly.
Almost as if the person outside wanted us to hear every second of our fear.
Nathan stood in front of me.
Protecting me.
Not like before.
Not like the man who thought hiding things was protection.
This time…
He stood there because he finally understood.
The office was completely dark.
The only light came from the city outside the windows.
And in that dim reflection, I saw him.
An old man.
Standing calmly in the doorway.
Wearing a black coat.
Holding a cane.
My grandfather.
The man I had mourned.
The man whose death had shaped my entire life.
Alive.
I couldn’t move.
“You grew up.”
His voice was exactly the same.
The same voice that used to read me stories.
The same voice that promised me:
No matter what happens, I will protect you.
I laughed.
A broken laugh.
“Protect me?”
His expression changed.
“Emily…”
“No.”
I stepped back.
“You don’t get to say my name like nothing happened.”
The old man lowered his eyes.
“I deserve that.”
Nathan looked at him coldly.
“Why are you here?”
My grandfather looked at him.
“You always were your father’s son.”
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
“And you’re exactly what everyone said.”
The old man frowned.
“A monster?”
Nathan didn’t answer.
Because maybe he was.
My grandfather stepped inside and closed the door behind him.
“Before you judge me, you need to hear the truth.”
I shook my head.
“No more secrets.”
My voice became stronger.
“No more half-truths.”
“I want everything.”
He nodded.
“Fair.”
Then he placed something on my desk.
A small black box.
My heart stopped.
Because I recognized it.
It belonged to my mother.
My mother’s jewelry box.
The one I thought was lost when I was a child.
I stared.
“Where did you get that?”
My grandfather looked away.
“Your mother gave it to me.”
The room went silent.
“My mother?”
I whispered.
“She’s dead.”
“I know.”
My hands started shaking.
“Then how?”
My grandfather sat down.
For the first time, he looked old.
Really old.
“Because your mother knew everything.”
I froze.
“Everything about what?”
He opened the box.
Inside was a small flash drive.
And a photograph.
A photograph of my mother.
Standing beside another person.
A man.
Younger.
I looked closer.
My breath disappeared.
The man was Adrian Vale.
Nathan’s father.
“No.”
I stepped away.
“That’s impossible.”
My grandfather nodded.
“It is.”
“But it happened.”
Nathan stared at the picture.
His face changed.
“My father knew her?”
My grandfather looked at him.
“They weren’t enemies at first.”
The words shocked us both.
“They were partners.”
Silence.
The entire history we believed…
was wrong.
“Then what happened?”
I asked.
My grandfather looked at me.
“Greed.”
“Your mother discovered Adrian was hiding money.”
“She discovered he had built an empire using stolen identities.”
“She wanted to expose him.”
Nathan whispered:
“My father killed her.”
My grandfather looked at him.
“No.”
That single word destroyed everything.
“No?”
Nathan repeated.
“He didn’t kill her.”
A pause.
“Your father tried to save her.”
Nathan looked confused.
“Then who did?”
My grandfather’s eyes moved toward me.
And I understood.
He wasn’t looking at Nathan.
He was looking at me.
“Your father.”
My body went cold.
“My father?”
The man who raised me.
The man I trusted.
The man who always told me Adrian Vale ruined our family.
“He killed my mother?”
My grandfather nodded slowly.
“He caused the accident.”
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“No.”
My voice cracked.
“No, he loved her.”
“He loved control more.”
The words hit harder than any confession.
Nathan moved closer.
“Why didn’t you tell her?”
My grandfather closed his eyes.
“Because your father threatened you.”
I froze.
“What?”
“He told me if I exposed him…”
A tear appeared in the old man’s eye.
“He would finish what he started.”
The room became silent.
Because suddenly…
all the lies had a reason.
Not an excuse.
A reason.
But one question remained.
“Claire.”
I whispered.
My grandfather looked at me.
“What about Claire?”
I stepped forward.
“She said she tried to stop you.”
His expression changed.
Not anger.
Fear.
“Where is she?”
I stared.
“You tell me.”
He looked at Nathan.
Then back at me.
“She was never working for me.”
My heart sank.
“What?”
“She was working for someone else.”
The lights suddenly came back on.
Every screen in my office turned on.
A video started playing.
Claire.
Sitting in a dark room.
Her face bruised.
Her eyes full of fear.
My breath stopped.
“Emily…”
Her voice came through the speakers.
“If you’re watching this…”
She started crying.
“I failed.”
I moved closer to the screen.
“Claire…”
The video continued.
“I thought I could fix it.”
“I thought I could control him.”
A shadow appeared behind her.
A man.
My blood froze.
Because I recognized him.
The same face from the photograph.
Older.
But alive.
Adrian Vale.
Nathan’s father.
Nathan whispered:
“No.”
The video ended.
Then a message appeared:
YOU FOUND THE TRUTH.
NOW COME FIND THE PERSON WHO STARTED IT.
Coordinates appeared.
My grandfather stood.
Nathan looked at me.
“What are you going to do?”
I looked at the screen.
At the man who destroyed generations of lives.
At the secrets that stole my mother.
My childhood.
My future.
And for the first time…
I wasn’t afraid.
I picked up my coat.
“We end this.”
Nathan nodded.
But before we left…
my grandfather stopped me.
“Emily.”
I turned.
His voice softened.
“I’m sorry.”
Two words.
The words I waited my entire life to hear.
But they came too late.
I looked at him.
“I believe you.”
His eyes filled.
“But forgiveness…”
I opened the door.
“Is something you have to earn.”
May you like
And then we walked out.
Toward the place where all the lies began.
