PART 9 The Brother’s Secret

For a moment, neither of us moved.

My brother stood in the middle of the abandoned office like he belonged there.

Like he had been waiting.

Like he knew I would eventually discover everything.

“Marcus…”

I said his name slowly.

Because saying it felt strange.

This was my brother.

The person who taught me how to ride a bicycle.

The person who sat beside me when I cried after my first heartbreak.

The person who promised our parents would always protect each other.

And now he was standing beside evidence of the biggest betrayal of my life.

He looked older.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

His face carried the exhaustion of someone who had spent years hiding a truth.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.”

He said.

I almost smiled.

“Really?”

My voice was cold.

“How did you want me to find out?”

He looked down.

“I don’t know.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“You knew exactly.”

I pointed toward the documents.

“You planned everything.”

His jaw tightened.

“Not everything.”

That sentence.

That excuse.

It sounded too familiar.

I laughed softly.

“Is that what everyone says when they destroy someone?”

“Emily…”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“Let me understand.”

I looked around the office.

“This is where you helped them.”

Marcus didn’t answer.

“You gave Nathan information about me.”

“Yes.”

The honesty shocked me.

I expected denial.

A lie.

Anything.

But he admitted it.

My throat tightened.

“Why?”

He looked at me.

And for the first time…

I saw pain in his eyes.

“Because I was desperate.”

I stared.

“Everyone keeps using that word.”

My voice trembled.

“Desperate.”

I stepped closer.

“What does it mean?”

“That you’re allowed to ruin someone else’s life?”

Silence.

Marcus lowered his head.

“I owed money.”

I froze.

“What?”

“I made mistakes.”

I almost laughed.

Because the sentence sounded so small.

Like losing money was a mistake.

Like betraying your sister was an accident.

“How much?”

He didn’t answer.

“How much, Marcus?”

“Three million.”

The number hung in the air.

Three million.

“So you sold me.”

His eyes filled.

“No.”

“Yes.”

I said.

“You did.”

“I thought I could fix it.”

“By giving Nathan access to my life?”

“I thought it would stop.”

“Stop what?”

He looked away.

“My father.”

I froze.

Not Nathan’s father.

Mine.

“What?”

Marcus walked to the window.

The glass was dusty.

The city outside looked blurred.

“Our father knew.”

My heart sank.

“Knew what?”

“That I was in debt.”

I waited.

“And?”

“He made a deal.”

My stomach turned.

“What deal?”

Marcus whispered:

“He told me if I helped Richard Hayes, he would erase everything.”

The room became silent.

My own family.

My own blood.

Everyone had been moving pieces around me.

I was never a person to them.

I was an asset.

“No.”

I shook my head.

“No, Dad would never.”

Marcus looked at me.

“You still believe that?”

That hurt.

Because a part of me did.

He opened another folder.

Inside were emails.

Bank records.

Messages.

I read the first page.

Richard Hayes: The daughter is the key.

My hands started shaking.

Marcus: I understand.

Richard Hayes: Once she marries Nathan, the trust becomes easier to access.

I couldn’t breathe.

The wedding.

The proposal.

The relationship.

It wasn’t just Nathan.

It was everyone.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I whispered.

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Because every time I tried…”

He stopped.

“Your father reminded me what would happen.”

“What?”

“He said you would lose everything.”

I stared.

“And you believed him?”

Marcus looked at me.

“I was afraid.”

There it was.

Again.

Fear.

I wiped my eyes.

Not because I was crying.

Because I was angry.

“You know what hurts?”

I whispered.

Marcus waited.

“Not that you were scared.”

My voice broke.

“That you decided I wasn’t strong enough to know.”

He looked away.

“You made the decision for me.”

Silence.

Then Marcus said:

“There’s something else.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

“What?”

He walked toward a locked cabinet.

Opened it.

Inside was a small black box.

He placed it on the table.

“Nathan gave me this.”

I stared.

“What is it?”

“Everything.”

He opened the box.

Inside were old hard drives.

A phone.

Printed documents.

“The original recordings.”

My heartbeat increased.

“Recordings of what?”

Marcus looked at me.

“Meetings.”

“With Richard.”

“With Nathan.”

“With everyone.”

My hands went cold.

“You recorded them?”

He nodded.

“Why?”

A bitter smile appeared.

“Because even though I was part of it…”

He swallowed.

“I knew one day you would need proof.”

I didn’t know what to feel.

Anger.

Betrayal.

Confusion.

My brother had hurt me.

But he had also kept the weapon that could destroy them.

Before I could speak…

The office door slammed shut.

We both turned.

A man stood at the entrance.

A familiar voice filled the room.

“Very touching.”

My blood froze.

Because I knew that voice.

My father.

He stepped inside slowly.

Wearing the same expensive suit he always wore.

The same confident expression.

But this time…

I didn’t see my father.

I saw the person behind everything.

“Emily.”

He smiled.

“You really are more difficult than I expected.”

Marcus stepped in front of me.

“Dad, stop.”

My father laughed.

“Now you want to protect her?”

He looked at me.

“You have no idea how much trouble you caused.”

I stared at him.

“No.”

I said quietly.

“You have no idea what you caused.”

His smile faded.

For the first time…

He looked uncertain.

I picked up the black box.

“You spent years trying to control my life.”

I stepped forward.

“But you forgot one thing.”

“What?”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“You taught me how to fight.”

The room went silent.

Then my father smiled again.

Because he still believed he had power.

He reached into his coat.

And pulled out a document.

A single document.

“You want the truth?”

He said.

“Then read this.”

He placed it on the table.

My name was written at the top.

And below it…

A signature.

My signature.

On a document I had never seen before.

My father whispered:

May you like

“According to this…”

“You already gave me everything.”
