PART 8 The Man Behind The Plan

For a few seconds, I couldn’t speak.

Not because I didn’t hear him.

Because I did.

Every word.

Every syllable.

And somehow, that made it worse.

“My father.”

Nathan’s voice echoed through the phone.

I stood on the sidewalk outside the hotel, holding the folder against my chest, while people walked past me without knowing my entire past had just shifted again.

“Your father?”

I finally whispered.

Nathan exhaled.

“Yes.”

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because my mind couldn’t accept another betrayal.

“Don’t.”

My voice hardened.

“Don’t try to make yourself look like a victim now.”

“I’m not.”

“You lied to me.”

“I know.”

“You used me.”

“I know.”

“You planned everything.”

“I know.”

His voice cracked.

“But I didn’t create the plan.”

I closed my eyes.

Six months ago, those words would have destroyed me.

Now?

They only made me tired.

Because I had already mourned him.

The man I loved was already gone.

“Explain.”

That was all I said.

One word.

Nathan was silent for a long time.

Then he spoke.

“My father, Richard, built the company.”

I knew the name.

Everyone did.

Richard Hayes.

A powerful businessman.

The kind of person who appeared in magazines and charity events.

The kind of man people described as brilliant.

“He was the one who discovered your family’s trust.”

Nathan continued.

“He knew about it before I met you.”

My hands tightened.

“He created the strategy.”

My stomach turned.

“Strategy?”

Nathan swallowed.

“The relationship. The engagement. The image.”

I stared at the folder.

Project Emily.

A person’s life reduced to a business plan.

“Why?”

Nathan’s voice became quieter.

“Because your grandfather refused to invest in my father’s company years ago.”

I frowned.

“What?”

Nathan continued.

“My father believed your family humiliated him.”

A pause.

“He spent years trying to prove he could take everything from them.”

I felt cold.

Because this was no longer about money.

It was revenge.

“And you?”

I asked.

“What were you?”

Silence.

Then:

“The son who wanted his father’s approval.”

That answer hurt more than I expected.

Because suddenly, for the first time…

I saw Nathan clearly.

Not as the monster I wanted him to be.

Not as the perfect man I once loved.

But as someone weak.

Someone who traded his own morality for acceptance.

“You could have stopped.”

“I know.”

“You could have told me.”

“I know.”

“You could have chosen me.”

The silence after that question was unbearable.

Finally, he said:

“I tried.”

I almost laughed.

“No, Nathan.”

“I tried to leave.”

His voice shook.

“After I met you.”

I didn’t answer.

“When we started dating, I was supposed to follow the plan.”

He continued.

“But then you became real.”

My chest tightened.

Because I hated that part of me wanted to believe him.

“I started deleting files.”

“I stopped reporting things to my father.”

“I changed parts of the agreement.”

“Then why did you still do it?”

My voice broke slightly.

“Because I was afraid.”

There it was again.

Fear.

The excuse that had destroyed everything.

“My father threatened me.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He said if I walked away, he would destroy the company.”

A pause.

“And destroy you.”

The world felt unstable.

“What does that mean?”

Nathan answered slowly.

“He knew about your career.”

“He knew about your family.”

“He knew how much you cared about helping people.”

My heart sank.

“He said he would make sure everyone believed you were involved.”

“Fraud.”

“Financial crimes.”

“Anything.”

I looked down at the folder.

For the first time, I wondered…

Was Nathan protecting me in the only way he knew?

Or was that another excuse?

“You’re telling me you hurt me to save me?”

I whispered.

“No.”

His answer came immediately.

“I’m telling you I was a coward.”

That honesty surprised me.

“I should have told you.”

“I should have trusted you.”

“I should have faced my father.”

I didn’t speak.

Because there was nothing to say.

Then Nathan said:

“There’s more.”

Of course.

There was always more.

“My father is trying to finish the plan.”

My body went still.

“What?”

“He wants control of your family assets.”

“But the plan failed.”

“He doesn’t know that.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What is he going to do?”

Nathan hesitated.

Then:

“He’s going after the trust legally.”

I frowned.

“How?”

“He has someone inside your family.”

My heart dropped.

Again.

“Who?”

Nathan whispered:

“Your brother.”

The café.

The documents.

The messages.

Everything suddenly connected.

My brother.

The person who knew my family.

The person who introduced Nathan’s world to mine.

I sat down on a bench.

Because my legs stopped feeling strong.

“How long?”

Nathan answered:

“Years.”

I couldn’t believe it.

My own brother.

I remembered every time he told me:

“Nathan seems like a good guy.”

Every time he encouraged me.

Every time he pushed the wedding.

Was he helping me?

Or helping them?

“I need proof.”

I said.

Nathan replied:

“I have it.”

My breath stopped.

“What?”

“The original files.”

“The first version of the plan.”

“Every instruction my father gave me.”

“Where?”

A pause.

“Hidden.”

“Where?”

His voice became barely audible.

“In the old office.”

I knew the place.

The company building where Nathan started.

The building now abandoned after the expansion.

“Why tell me now?”

I asked.

His answer was quiet.

“Because I finally understand.”

“Understand what?”

“That losing you was not the worst thing I did.”

A pause.

“The worst thing was becoming someone who deserved to lose you.”

I looked at the city lights.

The same city where Nathan once proposed.

The same city where I believed my future was beginning.

“Emily…”

He said my name softly.

“Whatever happens next…”

I interrupted.

“Don’t.”

Silence.

“Don’t say you love me.”

His breathing stopped.

“Because love without honesty is just another kind of lie.”

I ended the call.

That night, I didn’t sleep.

I prepared.

I contacted my lawyer.

I contacted investigators.

I gathered every document.

Because this time…

I wasn’t fighting for Nathan.

I wasn’t fighting for revenge.

I was fighting for myself.

The next morning, I arrived at the abandoned office.

The doors were locked.

The building was empty.

Dust covered everything.

But someone had been there recently.

A light was on upstairs.

My lawyer looked at me.

“Someone is inside.”

I stared at the staircase.

My heart started beating faster.

Because whoever was waiting…

Wasn’t Nathan.

And when I reached the second floor…

I saw him.

My brother.

Standing beside a table full of documents.

He looked at me.

And smiled sadly.

“Emily.”

I froze.

Because the person who betrayed me wasn’t the man I loved.

It was the person I trusted my whole life.

He picked up a folder.

May you like

And said:

“I was hoping you’d never find this.”
