Chapter 2 - The Unraveling

The metallic sound of the deadbolt locking echoed through the suite like a gunshot.

Elliot’s eyes widened in disbelief. "Are you out of your mind? Unbolt that door right now! I am a tier-one VIP guest at this hotel. One phone call to management and you’ll be in handcuffs before you reach the lobby!"

Ryan ignored him entirely. He stepped around the silver cart, his boots making heavy, deliberate sounds against the floor. He walked straight past Elliot and dropped to his knees beside Margaret.

"Maggie," Ryan whispered. His voice was raw, shaking with a devastating blend of love and horror. "Maggie, look at me."

Margaret reached out with her uninjured hand, her fingers trembling violently as she touched her brother’s face. "Ryan... oh god, Ryan... how did you... how did you find me?"

"I've been looking for you for two years, Maggs," Ryan said softly, gently lifting her arm to examine the brutal, raised red welts left by the leather belt. His jaw clenched so tight the muscles in his cheeks twitched. "He wouldn't let your letters through. He blocked my calls. He told the police I was stalking you."

"Ryan, you have to leave," Margaret panicked, trying to push him away with her frail strength. "He's powerful... he'll ruin you... he promised he'd destroy your life if you ever came near me..."

"He isn't going to ruin anything, Maggie," Ryan said quietly, his blue eyes turning to liquid ice.

He reached out and smoothed her tear-stained hair back from her forehead, his eyes dropping to her eight-month bump. "Is the baby okay?"

"I... I think so," she sobbed. "He kicked... but I'm so scared..."

"Hey," Ryan said, touching her cheek gently. "I'm here now. Nobody is touching you ever again."

"Hey! You piece of trash!" Elliot’s voice boomed from behind them.

Elliot had recovered his composure, his panic morphing into the arrogant, untouchable rage of a man who had never faced consequences in his life. He marched over, reaching out a hand to grab Ryan by the collar of his hotel vest.

"Get your filthy hands off my wife!" Elliot barked. "She is a Chambers now! She belongs to me! Get out of my suite before I have my security team beat you into the pavement!"

Ryan didn't even flinch as Elliot’s fingers grabbed his collar.

Slowly, deliberately, Ryan stood up. He turned around to face the billionaire.

Standing at full height, Ryan was a full inch shorter than Elliot, but he carried the dense, terrifying posture of a man trained for war. His eyes were dead, vacant of fear, filled only with a lethal, focused intent.

"What did you use?" Ryan asked quietly.

Elliot sneered, attempting to push Ryan back toward the door. "What?"

"What did you hit her with?" Ryan repeated, his voice dropping into a guttural register.

Elliot let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "She's my wife! Whatever happens between us behind closed doors is none of your damn business, you broke little loser! She lives in my house, she eats my food, and she carries my heir! If she needs discipline, I give her discipline!"

Elliot reached back toward his waist, foolishly tapping the silver buckle of his belt. "Now get out before I—"

Before Elliot could finish the sentence, Ryan’s hand shot forward like a strike from a pit viper.

He grabbed Elliot’s throat, his fingers digging into the carotid artery, and slammed the billionaire backward with tremendous force.

Elliot’s head cracked against the gilded mirror above the desk. Spiderweb cracks instantly shattered across the glass. Elliot let out a choked, desperate gasp, his hands clawing uselessly at Ryan’s iron grip.

"Ryan, no!" Margaret screamed from the floor.

"You hit a pregnant woman," Ryan growled, leaning in until his nose was an inch from Elliot’s pale, terrified face. "You hit my sister."

"I'll... I'll buy... your whole... life..." Elliot managed to wheeze out, his face turning a deep, suffocating purple as his knees buckled. "I'll pay you... millions..."

"I don't want your money, Elliot," Ryan whispered.

Ryan pulled back his right fist and drove it straight into the center of Elliot’s face.

CRACK.

The sound of Elliot’s nose breaking echoed through the suite. Blood erupted from the billionaire's face, splattering across his white Oxford shirt and the broken mirror behind him. Elliot shrieked, a high-pitched, pathetic sound, as Ryan let go of his throat.

Elliot collapsed onto the carpet, clutching his face, blood pouring through his fingers onto the expensive rug.

"My face!" Elliot sobbed, curling into a ball, the terrifying CEO completely evaporating into a weeping coward. "You broke my nose! Security! Someone help me!"

Ryan stepped over him without a second glance. He unbuckled Elliot’s belt, yanked it out of his pants loops in one smooth motion, and tossed it into the fireplace at the side of the room, where the decorative gas flames instantly began to scorch the leather.

Then, Ryan walked back to Margaret.

He bent down, carefully slid his arms under her back and knees, and lifted her off the floor as gently as if she were made of glass. Margaret wrapped her uninjured arm tightly around her brother's neck, burying her face in his chest, weeping uncontrollably.

"I've got you, Maggs," Ryan murmured, holding her securely against his chest.

Elliot scrambled onto his knees, wiping blood from his mouth, his eyes wide with hysterical rage. "You walk out that door with her, and I'll call the police! I'll report you for kidnapping! I'll report you for assault! You'll spend thirty years in maximum security!"

Ryan stopped at the door. He turned his head slightly, looking down at the bleeding billionaire lying in his own mess on the floor.

May you like

"Call them," Ryan said flatly. "Please. Call every cop in Chicago. Because when they get here, they're going to see what you did to her. And then I'm going to take everything you own."

Ryan unlocked the heavy oak door with one hand, pushed it open, and carried his sister out into the quiet, carpeted hallway of the Harrison Hotel, leaving the bleeding CEO screaming into the empty room.
