Chapter 5 - The Legal Battle

Three weeks later.
The Cook County Family Court building was surrounded by a wall of news vans, satellite dishes, and screaming reporters.
The story of the fallen billionaire had captivated the entire nation. Headlines screamed across newspapers from New York to Los Angeles: THE MONSTER OF LAKE FOREST: CEO ARRESTED FOR BRUTAL ASSAULT ON PREGNANT WIFE.
Inside Courtroom 402, the air was cold and smelled of old floor wax and polished mahogany.
Margaret sat at the plaintiff's table, wearing a simple, elegant dark green maternity dress. She looked healthy, her skin glowing, her blonde hair pulled back into a neat braid. Beside her sat Ryan and her lead family law attorney, Eleanor Vance—Sarah’s older sister, one of the most ruthless domestic protection lawyers in the Midwest.
Across the aisle sat Elliot Chambers.
He sat in an orange prison jumpsuit, his hands and ankles bound by heavy steel chains. His nose was still crooked, framed by faint yellowing bruises, and his eyes were hollow, sunken, and wild. He was flanked by three high-priced criminal defense attorneys provided by his family's trust fund.
Judge Beatrice Hayes, a formidable woman in her sixties with sharp silver hair and a reputation for absolute intolerance toward domestic abusers, sat on the bench, reviewing the thick stack of documents before her.
"We are here today for the emergency petition regarding full legal and physical custody of the unborn child, Baby Boy Chambers, as well as the immediate dissolution of the marriage," Judge Hayes announced, her voice echoing off the high ceiling.
Elliot’s lead attorney, a slick man named Vance Montgomery, stood up smoothly.
"Your Honor," Montgomery began, offering a practiced, charming smile. "While my client deeply regrets the unfortunate verbal altercation that took place at the Harrison Hotel, we must remember that Mr. Chambers has not yet been convicted of any crime. He is entitled to the presumption of innocence. Furthermore, Mrs. Chambers has a documented history of severe psychological instability..."
Montgomery pulled a thick blue folder from his briefcase.
"...as evidenced by these psychiatric evaluation reports signed by Dr. Harrison Vance two years ago, claiming Mrs. Chambers suffers from delusional paranoid tendencies. Allowing a woman of such questionable mental health sole custody of a child worth billions would be a travesty of justice."
Margaret’s hand trembled slightly under the table. Ryan instantly reached out, placing his warm, solid hand over hers, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
Eleanor Vance stood up slowly from the plaintiff's table. She didn't look at Montgomery. She looked directly at Judge Hayes.
"Your Honor," Eleanor said calmly. "We have submitted a supplementary filing this morning. Item 4B."
Judge Hayes flipped through her stack until she reached the red-tabbed folder.
"Dr. Harrison Vance—the psychiatrist who authored those reports," Eleanor explained, "was arrested by federal marshals forty-eight hours ago. He has formally signed a confession admitting that he received over eight hundred thousand dollars in kickbacks from Elliot Chambers to fabricate mental health diagnoses against Margaret Chambers in order to isolate her and secure pre-emptive leverage in the event of a divorce."
Elliot’s face twitched violently. He turned his head, spitting a quiet curse toward his attorney.
"Furthermore," Eleanor continued, raising her voice so it echoed across the courtroom, "we submit the medical evaluations conducted by Mount Sinai Hospital following the incident on the night of the fourteenth. These documents detail eleven distinct contusions across Mrs. Chambers’s body, defensive wounds on her forearms, and a acute stress reaction that nearly triggered premature labor."
Eleanor stepped toward the center of the room, pointing a single, sharp finger directly at Elliot.
"Elliot Chambers did not have a 'verbal altercation,' Your Honor. He systematically tortured his pregnant wife with a leather weapon in a locked hotel room. If he had not been interrupted by Mrs. Chambers’s brother, my client might not be sitting in this courtroom today."
Judge Hayes set her glasses down onto her desk. Her face was carved from dark granite as she looked down at Elliot Chambers.
"Mr. Montgomery," Judge Hayes said, her voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register. "Do you have any legitimate defense against these medical reports and the hotel surveillance footage?"
Montgomery swallowed hard, his charming demeanor completely evaporating. "Your Honor... my client maintains..."
"Enough," Judge Hayes cut him off sharply.
She picked up her wooden gavel, her eyes fixed on Elliot, who was squirming in his steel chains.
"This court finds clear, overwhelming, and uncontradicted evidence of extreme domestic violence and severe danger to the unborn child," Judge Hayes declared firmly. "Physical and legal custody of Baby Boy Chambers is hereby awarded entirely and exclusively to Margaret Sullivan upon his birth. A permanent, lifetime order of protection is issued against Elliot Chambers. He is barred from coming within five thousand feet of Margaret Sullivan or her child forever."
BANG.
The sound of the wooden gavel striking the sound block echoed through the courtroom like a thunderclap.
"No!" Elliot screamed, jumping out of his chair, his chains rattling violently as he lunged toward the plaintiff's table. "No! You can't take my son! He’s a Chambers! He belongs to me, you bitch!"
Two heavy-set court bailiffs instantly grabbed Elliot’s arms, slamming him face-first onto the wooden table, pinning him down as he writhed and shrieked like a wild animal.
Margaret stood up slowly, looking down at the man who had terrified her for two long years.
For the first time in her life, she felt no fear. She felt no desire to hide.
She looked Elliot straight in his wild, weeping eyes, reached up, and unclasped the heavy diamond anniversary necklace he had forced her to wear.

She let it drop onto the wooden table right in front of his bloody nose.
"His name isn't Chambers, Elliot," Margaret said, her voice clear, strong, and completely unbroken. "His name is Leo Sullivan. And he will never know who you are."
