Chapter 3 - Safe House

The chill of the Chicago night air hit Margaret’s face like a cold shock as Ryan carried her out through the hotel’s rear service exit.

A dark gray SUV was parked in the alleyway, its engine idling quietly. Standing beside the driver's side door was a tall, sharp-featured woman in a leather jacket, her dark hair pulled back into a tight tactical bun.

This was Agent Sarah Vance—former military investigator and Ryan’s business partner at their private security firm.

When Sarah saw Ryan carrying Margaret, her face went hard as granite. She immediately threw open the back door of the SUV, which had been modified with thick blankets, pillows, and a portable medical kit.

"Is she okay?" Sarah asked rapidly, helping Ryan gently lower Margaret onto the leather seat.

"Placental check needed," Ryan said, his voice clipped and precise. "Blunt force trauma to the arm and back. He was using a heavy belt."

Sarah let out a dark, dangerous curse under her breath. She reached into her jacket and pulled out a clean, sterile thermal blanket, draping it over Margaret’s shivering shoulders. "I've got a private OB-GYN waiting at the safe house in Lincoln Park. Dr. Aris. She’s off the grid, Ryan. No hospital reporting logs for Elliot’s lawyers to track."

"Good," Ryan said. He squeezed Margaret’s hand. "Maggie, this is Sarah. You're completely safe with her. I need you to go with her to the house."

Margaret’s hand tightened around his sleeve in sudden panic. "Ryan, no! Don't leave me! Where are you going?"

"I have to go clean up the paper trail, Maggs," Ryan lied smoothly, offering her a soft, reassuring smile that didn't reach his cold eyes. "I need to make sure Elliot can't use his hotel connections to erase the security footage from tonight. I'll be right behind you. I promise."

Margaret looked into her brother's eyes, seeing the fiercest protection she had ever known. Slowly, she nodded, letting go of his sleeve. "Please be careful... Elliot has politicians in his pocket, Ryan. He has judges."

"Let him," Ryan murmured. "They don't know who they're dealing with."

Sarah closed the rear door, hopped into the driver's seat, and accelerated out of the alleyway, the SUV disappearing into the midnight city traffic.

Ryan stood alone in the alley, the rain beginning to fall in light, steady ribbons around him. He pulled out a encrypted satellite phone from his pocket, dial-pad glowing blue in the dark.

He pressed a single speed-dial button.

"Speak," a deep, raspy voice answered on the second ring. It was Marcus, Ryan’s former commanding officer from the Marines, who now ran high-level intelligence networks in Washington D.C.

"The Chambers target crossed the line," Ryan said, his voice entirely flat, devoid of any emotion. "He put hands on my sister. She’s eight months pregnant."

A heavy silence hung over the line for three seconds.

"Is the baby intact?" Marcus asked sharply.

"Medical evaluation in progress," Ryan replied. "I need the vault opened, Marcus. Every wiretap we've placed on Chambers Global over the last eighteen months. Every illegal offshore transaction, every bribe to the zoning board, every suppressed NDA from his former assistants."

"Ryan," Marcus warned sternly. "If we release that file, it won't just destroy Elliot Chambers. It will bring down half the corporate board in Chicago. They will fight like cornered animals."

Ryan looked up at the glittering, high-rise tower of the Harrison Hotel looming over the alleyway.

"Good," Ryan whispered, his hand tightening around the phone until the plastic creaked. "I want them all in the dark with him."

An hour later, in a quiet, heavily guarded brownstone in Lincoln Park, Margaret lay on a soft examination table.

Dr. Aris, a gentle woman in her fifties with graying hair and precise hands, moved a portable ultrasound wand across Margaret’s bare, gel-covered belly.

The room was quiet, save for the rhythmic, miraculous sound that suddenly filled the space from the monitor's speaker:

Thump-thump-thump-thump-thump.

Tears leaked from the corners of Margaret’s eyes, falling onto the paper covering the table. "Is he... is he okay?"

Dr. Aris smiled softly, pointing at the dark gray screen where a tiny, perfectly formed heart was fluttering rapidly. "The placenta is completely intact, Margaret. Your baby boy is remarkably resilient. He’s strong, healthy, and entirely unharmed."

Margaret let out a long, shuddering sob of pure relief, pressing her hand against her mouth.

Sarah Vance stepped closer, handing Margaret a warm cup of herbal tea. "The doctor cleaned and dressed the welts on your arm, Margaret. There won't be any permanent scarring. But Dr. Aris wants you on strict bed rest for the next forty-eight hours."

"Where is Elliot?" Margaret asked quietly, her voice trembling at the mention of her husband's name. "Has he called the police?"

Sarah let out a dry, ruthless laugh. "Elliot Chambers is currently sitting in the emergency room at Northwestern Memorial with a shattered nasal bone, two black eyes, and three missing teeth. He tried to tell the attending doctor that he fell down the stairs, but the hotel staff already knows something happened."

"He's going to come for me," Margaret whispered, horror creeping back into her chest. "You don't understand how he thinks, Sarah. To Elliot, I am his property. He will burn this city down before he lets a woman leave him."

The heavy front door of the brownstone clicked open.

Ryan walked into the room. He had changed out of his hotel uniform into a dark jacket and jeans. He carried a heavy, black leather briefcase in his right hand.

He walked over to the exam table, leaning down to kiss Margaret’s forehead. "I heard the heartbeat from the hallway, Maggs. He’s a tough little guy."

"Ryan," Margaret said, searching his face. "What are we going to do? Elliot’s lawyers will file for emergency custody the second the baby is born. He’ll use my history... he made me see a psychiatrist he paid off... he has medical records claiming I’m mentally unstable!"

Ryan set the heavy black briefcase onto the table at the foot of her bed. He unlatched the brass locks with two sharp clicks and pulled the lid open.

Inside were hundreds of pages of financial ledgers, encrypted flash drives, photographic evidence, and audio recording devices.

"Elliot thought he was hiding you from the world, Maggie," Ryan said softly, picking up a thick red folder from the stack. "What he didn't know was that for the last eighteen months, I've been auditing his entire life."

May you like

Margaret stared at the folder in disbelief. "What is this?"

"This," Ryan smiled—a cold, terrifying, beautiful smile—"is the total destruction of the Chambers family empire."
