Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Empire

The weeks following the custody hearing saw the total, irreversible collapse of the Chambers dynasty.

Without Elliot at the helm, Chambers Global spiraled into bankruptcy. The Department of Justice seized seventy percent of the family's liquid assets following the discovery of the cartel-linked offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. Board members resigned en masse, shareholders filed class-action lawsuits, and the company's Lake Forest estate was placed on the auction block to pay off federal fines.

In the federal detention center in downtown Chicago, Elliot Chambers sat in a six-by-eight-foot cell, awaiting his trial for federal racketeering and aggravated domestic assault.

The man who had once commanded ten-billion-dollar mergers now wore gray canvas slip-ons and spent twenty-three hours a day staring at a concrete wall.

On a warm Tuesday morning in early October, Elliot was escorted by two guards into the small, glass-divided visitor room.

He sat down heavily on the stool, picking up the plastic telephone receiver with shaking hands.

Sitting on the other side of the bulletproof glass was Ryan Sullivan.

Ryan looked relaxed, wearing a dark blue sweater, looking at Elliot with calm, untroubled eyes.

"What do you want?" Elliot rasped into the receiver, his voice hollow and broken. "Have you come to laugh at me? Have you come to gloat?"

"No," Ryan replied smoothly, his voice carrying clearly through the static speaker. "I came to deliver a message from Maggie."

Elliot’s eyes flickered with a sudden, desperate spark of hope. "Maggie? Is she... does she want to talk to me? Tell her I'm sorry, Ryan! Tell her I was under immense stress with the merger! I can get help! We can go to counseling!"

Ryan let out a soft, dry laugh that chilled Elliot to the bone.

"She doesn't want your apology, Elliot," Ryan said quietly. "And she certainly doesn't want your help."

Ryan reached into his jacket pocket and pressed a small photograph against the glass partition.

Elliot’s breath caught in his throat.

The photograph showed Margaret lying in a sunlit hospital bed at Prentice Women’s Hospital, smiling radiantly. Cradle in her arms was a beautiful, healthy baby boy with a thick mop of dark hair and bright, curious blue eyes. Sitting on the edge of the bed beside her was Ryan, holding the tiny baby's hand.

"He was born yesterday at 4:12 AM," Ryan whispered, his eyes locked onto Elliot’s trembling face. "Seven pounds, eight ounces. Healthy. Perfect."

Elliot reached out a chained hand, his fingers touching the cold glass right over the image of his son. Tears began to stream down his hollow cheeks. "My boy... my son..."

"He isn't your son, Elliot," Ryan said, sliding the photograph back into his jacket pocket. "His birth certificate was signed this morning. Mother: Margaret Sullivan. Father: None listed. His legal name is Leo Ryan Sullivan."

"You can't do this..." Elliot sobbed, pressing his forehead against the glass. "He's my blood! I am a Chambers!"

"There is no Chambers anymore, Elliot," Ryan said flatly. "Your house in Lake Forest was sold at auction yesterday. Your accounts are frozen. Your name is a curse in this city. When Leo grows up, he's going to learn that his family consists of his mother, his uncle, and the people who actually protected him."

Ryan stood up from his stool, smoothing down his sweater.

"You're going to spend the next twenty years in a federal prison, Elliot," Ryan said, leaning in close to the glass one last time. "And every single day you sit in that cell, I want you to remember the sound of that room service waiter walking into your suite."

Ryan hung up the receiver, turned his back on the weeping, screaming man behind the glass, and walked out into the bright Chicago morning.
