Chapter 5 - The Price of Redemption

While peace was slowly taking root inside the walls of the Oyster Bay fortress, storm clouds were gathering in the city outside.
Frank Rossi had spent thirty days trying to raise the three million dollars he owed Dominic Romano, but his gambling debts had overwhelmed his territory earnings. Panic-stricken and facing total financial ruin, Frank attempted a desperate, foolish move: he tried to form a secret alliance with the Calloway family, offering them access to the Romano shipping routes in exchange for three million dollars to pay off his debt to Dominic.
Dominic discovered the treason before the ink on the agreement was even dry.
On a cold Wednesday afternoon, while Meline was in the estate's glass greenhouse teaching nine-year-old Matteo how to plant winter botanical seeds, Dominic walked into the room. He wore a dark wool overcoat, his face completely devoid of expression—the look he wore when he was stepping into a war zone.
"Meline," Dominic said, stopping beside the wooden potting bench. "A word, please."
Meline wiped her dirt-stained hands on a towel, turning to Matteo. "Give us a moment, sweetie. Keep adding the topsoil just like I showed you." Matteo nodded quietly, continuing his work.
Meline stepped out of the greenhouse onto the brick pathway with Dominic. "What happened?"
"Your father betrayed the family contract," Dominic said flatly, his voice devoid of pity. "He tried to sell our port access to the Calloways to raise the money he owes me. In our world, that is high treason."
Meline felt a cold chill run down her spine. "What are you going to do?"
"My captains are rounding up his associates right now," Dominic informed her, his icy eyes searching her face for any sign of hesitation. "Frank Rossi will be executed tonight at the docks. I am telling you this out of respect for your position in my house. If you wish to request mercy for him... speak now."
Meline stood silent for a long moment, looking out over the grey waters of the Long Island Sound. She remembered the sterile white walls of the clinic. She remembered her father hurling his glass against the fireplace, calling her worthless merchandise. She remembered him shoving her into the back of a Lincoln Town Car and trading her to an Albanian sadist for three million dollars.
She looked back up into Dominic's eyes, her gaze steady, cold, and entirely unyielding.
"My father died the night he sold me in Queens," Meline said, her voice dropping to a calm, icy register. "The man who is at the docks tonight is simply a traitor who tried to destroy the house that protects your children. Do what you must do to keep this family safe, Dominic. You owe him nothing, and neither do I."
Dominic stared at her, a dark, dangerous satisfaction gleaming in his eyes. He realized then that Meline Rossi was not just a quiet, gentle maternal presence for his children; she possessed the fierce, unyielding backbone required of a true Mafia queen.
"Understood," Dominic said, reaching out to gently cup her face in his large hand, his thumb brushing her cheekbone with absolute tenderness. "I will be home late. Do not wait up for me."
"Dominic," she called out as he turned to leave.
He paused, looking back over his shoulder. "Yes?"

"Come home alive," she said simply. "The children need their father."
A faint, rare smile touched the corners of Dominic's hard mouth. "I will always come home to you," he promised, and walked toward his waiting armored convoy.
