Chapter 8 - The Aftermath of Fire

Fifteen minutes later, the heavy mechanical locking mechanism of the panic room door groaned, and the steel vault swung open slowly from the outside.
Dominic stood in the bright floodlights of the basement corridor, covered in rain, dust, and blood that did not belong to him. His custom assault rifle was slung across his chest, his face pale with a terrifying, wild panic that no man in New York had ever seen on the king of the syndicate.
When his eyes swept over the interior of the vault, he stopped dead in his tracks.
Meline was sitting on the floor, back pressed against the concrete wall, holding Bianca and Sophia tightly in her arms. Luca and Matteo were sitting on either side of her, their heads resting against her shoulders. All four children were completely unharm, wrapped in Meline's protective embrace.
"Dominic," Meline whispered, looking up at him through tired, soot-stained eyes.
Dominic dropped his weapon onto the concrete floor, ignoring the presence of his tactical guards behind him. He dropped to his knees in front of her, his massive hands reaching out to pull Meline, along with all four children, into a crushing, desperate embrace.
He buried his face in Meline's dark hair, his broad shoulders shaking with silent, deep sobs of overwhelming relief. "I thought I lost you... I thought I lost all of you..."
"They didn't touch us," Luca spoke up, his small voice filled with immense pride as he looked up at his father. "Meline shot the bad guy, Dad! She protected us! She saved us!"
Dominic pulled back slightly, looking down at Meline. He saw the empty revolver resting on the floor beside her, the powder burns on her coat, and the fierce, unyielding maternal light burning in her dark eyes.
He cupped her face in his trembling, blood-stained hands, pressing his forehead against hers. "You protected my blood," he choked out, his voice thick with raw emotion. "You fought for my children like a mother."
"They are my children now, Dominic," Meline whispered, tears finally breaking through her stoic defense, trickling down her soot-stained cheeks. "They have been mine since the moment I walked into this house."

Dominic kissed her then—not a strategic kiss of business or obligation, but a deep, passionate, desperate kiss that poured every ounce of his gratitude, his reverence, and his emerging love into her soul.
Standing around them in the dim basement, the four Romano children watched their father and Meline. Little Sophia smiled faintly, leaning her head against Meline's knee, while Luca quietly placed his hand over Meline's arm, sealing their unshakeable family bond forever.
