PART 3 — THE SECRET BEHIND THE HOSPITAL DOOR

PART 3 — THE SECRET BEHIND THE HOSPITAL DOOR
The drive to the hospital felt endless.
Every red light felt like an hour.
Every second felt like a risk.
Emily sat beside me, one hand gripping mine, the other resting on her stomach.
Her face was pale.
Too pale.
“Ethan…”
“I’m here.”
“What if something is wrong?”
I looked at her.
And even though fear was tearing through me, I forced my voice to stay steady.
“We’re going to find out.”
She nodded.
But I could see the tears forming.
For months, I had believed I was doing everything right.
Working longer hours.
Paying every bill.
Keeping everyone comfortable.
I thought exhaustion was proof of love.
I thought sacrifice was the same thing as being a good husband.
But sitting there in that car…
I realized something painful.
I had spent so much time providing for people…
I stopped noticing who was being hurt.
When we arrived, nurses rushed Emily inside.
The doctor connected the monitor.
I stood beside her, holding her hand.
The room was quiet except for the sound of the machine.
Then…
A few seconds passed.
Nothing.
My heart stopped.
“Doctor?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
He adjusted the monitor.
Emily’s eyes filled with fear.
“Ethan…”
I squeezed her hand.
“I’m here.”
Then suddenly…
A sound.
A heartbeat.
Fast.
Strong.
Alive.
The doctor smiled.
“There we go.”
The air returned to my lungs.
I almost collapsed from relief.
“Your son is okay.”
Emily closed her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“But…”
The doctor’s expression changed.
My stomach dropped.
“But what?”
He looked at Emily’s chart.
“Your blood pressure is elevated.”
“She’s been under significant stress.”
His eyes moved between us.
“At eight months, that can become dangerous.”
The words hit me harder than anything.
Stress.
Not an accident.
Not bad luck.
Stress.
The thing I ignored because I thought Emily was just tired.
The doctor lowered his voice.
“She needs rest.”
“Real rest.”
“No heavy work.”
“No emotional strain.”
He looked directly at me.
“Especially now.”
I nodded.
But inside…
I was furious.
Not at him.
At myself.
When the doctor left, Emily stared at the ceiling.
“I didn’t want you to fight with your family.”
I looked at her.
“You thought staying quiet would protect me?”
She nodded.
“I know how much they mean to you.”
I swallowed.
“They don’t mean more than you.”
She turned toward me.
For the first time that night, she looked like she believed me.
Almost.
Then my phone started ringing.
My mother.
I stared at the screen.
Emily noticed.
“You should answer.”
I hesitated.
Then I picked up.
“What?”
My mother’s voice came immediately.
“Ethan, how is Emily?”
The question sounded caring.
But something about it felt wrong.
“She’s okay.”
A pause.
“The baby is okay.”
Another pause.
Then:
“Good.”
Her relief sounded strange.
Almost like she wasn’t worried about the baby.
She was worried about something else.
“Mom.”
“Yes?”
“How did you know we came here?”
Silence.
A little too long.
“I assumed.”
“No.”
My voice became cold.
“You didn’t.”
She didn’t answer.
And that silence told me everything.
“Who told you?”
“Ethan—”
“Who?”
Finally:
“Brittany saw your location.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“She was worried.”
My stomach tightened.
That made no sense.
Because Brittany had barely looked up when Emily was crying.
Then I heard another voice in the background.
A man.
Not my mother.
“Did he ask?”
My blood ran cold.
“Who is that?”
The line went silent.
Then my mother said:
“I have to go.”
She hung up.
I stared at the phone.
Emily noticed my expression.
“What happened?”
I didn’t answer.
Because something was bothering me.
Something I couldn’t explain.
The next morning, after Emily was cleared to rest at home, I checked my security camera app.
I hadn’t looked at it in weeks.
But something made me open it.
The living room camera.
The night before.
The night I came home.
I watched.
My family arriving.
Eating.
Laughing.
Making a mess.
Then…
Something I didn’t expect.
At 7:42 p.m., before I arrived…
My mother was standing in the hallway.
Talking to Emily.
I turned the volume up.
At first, I heard nothing.
Then:
“You need to understand something.”
My mother’s voice.
Cold.
“You are temporary.”
I froze.
The recording continued.
Emily was standing there with her hands over her belly.
“Please, Teresa…”
My mother answered:
“When Ethan gets tired of this, he’ll realize you’re the reason his life became difficult.”
My hands started shaking.
Then my mother said the words that made everything inside me go silent.
“You’re lucky he doesn’t know the truth about your past.”
I stopped breathing.
The video kept playing.
Emily looked terrified.
“What are you talking about?”
My mother smiled.
A cruel smile.
“You know exactly what I mean.”
I replayed that sentence.
Again.
And again.
The truth about your past.
What truth?
What did my mother know?
And why did Emily look like she had heard something she was afraid I would discover?
I turned toward my wife.
She was sleeping on the couch.
One hand resting over our son.
Peaceful.
Vulnerable.
But now there was a question in my mind.
A question I never wanted to ask.
Was my mother lying to hurt her?
May you like
Or was she exposing a secret Emily had hidden from me?
