PART 5 — THE BROTHER WHO WAS NEVER GONE

PART 5 — THE BROTHER WHO WAS NEVER GONE
For several seconds, I couldn’t move.
I just stared at the picture.
Michael.
Alive.
Standing outside my building.
The same face I remembered from every family photo.
The same brother I had buried in my mind three years ago.
The same brother everyone told me was gone.
My hands started shaking.
Emily noticed.
“Ethan…”
Her voice was scared.
“What happened?”
I turned the phone toward her.
The moment she saw the picture…
She covered her mouth.
“No…”
I looked at her.
“You know?”
She shook her head quickly.
“No.”
But her face said something different.
“Emily.”
My voice was low.
“Did you know he was alive?”
She looked at me.
Tears filled her eyes.
“No.”
Then she paused.
“I thought he was dead.”
That should have comforted me.
But something was wrong.
Because she wasn’t just shocked.
She was terrified.
“Tell me everything.”
She looked away.
“I already told you.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“Not everything.”
She stayed silent.
And finally whispered:
“After Michael disappeared…”
“He called me.”
My stomach dropped.
“What?”
She nodded.
“One month after his funeral.”
“He called from an unknown number.”
“He said he needed help.”
I felt anger rising.
“And you didn’t tell me?”
She cried.
“I was scared.”
“Scared of what?”
Her answer came quietly.
“He said if I told you…”
“He would destroy you.”
I stared at her.
“Destroy me how?”
She looked at my stomach.
Then at me.
“He said he knew things about your family.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
Because now I understood.
This wasn’t just about money.
“What things?”
Emily shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
“He never explained.”
“He just kept threatening.”
I walked to the window.
Looking down at the street.
The same street where Michael’s photo was taken.
My brother was alive.
And someone in my family knew.
Someone had hidden it.
My phone rang again.
This time…
It was my mother.
I answered immediately.
“Mom.”
Silence.
Then:
“Ethan.”
Her voice sounded nervous.
Not angry.
Not controlling.
Nervous.
“Did you know?”
A pause.
“What?”
“About Michael.”
Another pause.
Too long.
“Ethan, listen to me.”
“No.”
My voice hardened.
“You listen.”
“Did you know my brother was alive?”
She didn’t answer.
And that was enough.
My chest tightened.
“Mom?”
Finally:
“Yes.”
The word came out softly.
I closed my eyes.
“How long?”
“Ethan…”
“How long?”
She whispered:
“Three years.”
Everything inside me went cold.
Three years.
She knew.
She let me believe my brother died.
She let me grieve.
She let me build a life on a lie.
“Why?”
My voice cracked.
“Why would you do that?”
My mother started crying.
“Because I was protecting you.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Protecting me?”
“You lied to me.”
“You don’t understand.”
“No.”
I looked at Emily.
“At this point, I really don’t.”
My mother lowered her voice.
“Michael wasn’t the person you thought he was.”
I froze.
“What does that mean?”
“He made mistakes.”
“Big mistakes.”
“And when he disappeared…”
“He begged me not to tell anyone.”
“Why?”
The silence returned.
Then she said:
“Because he was afraid of the people he owed money to.”
I frowned.
“Owed money?”
“Yes.”
“He got involved with dangerous people.”
I looked at Emily.
Her face changed.
Because she knew something.
“Mom.”
“What?”
“Did Michael know Emily?”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
My jaw tightened.
“How?”
My mother answered:
“He introduced her to them.”
The room spun.
I turned toward Emily.
Her face had gone pale.
“What?”
She whispered:
“I didn’t know.”
My mother continued.
“Emily was never the problem, Ethan.”
That sentence surprised me.
“What?”
“She was trying to escape him.”
I didn’t know what to believe anymore.
Everyone had lied.
Everyone had hidden things.
Then my mother said:
“There’s something else.”
I closed my eyes.
Of course there was.
“What?”
Her voice trembled.
“Michael came back because he wants something.”
“What?”
A pause.
Then:
“You.”
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?”
Before she answered…
The call cut off.
At that exact moment…
The lights in our apartment went out.
Complete darkness.
Emily gasped.
“Ethan?”
“I’m here.”
Then we heard it.
A sound from the front door.
The lock turning.
Slowly.
Someone had a key.
Someone was coming inside.
I moved in front of Emily.
My heart was pounding.
The door opened.
A shadow stepped into the apartment.
Then a familiar voice spoke.
“Brother.”
Michael walked inside.
Alive.
Calm.
Smiling.
And the first thing he said was:
May you like
“I think it’s time you learned what really happened three years ago.”
