PART 4 — THE SECRET EMILY NEVER TOLD ME

PART 4 — THE SECRET EMILY NEVER TOLD ME

I sat there for almost an hour.

Watching the video.

Replaying the same sentence.

Over and over.

“You’re lucky he doesn’t know the truth about your past.”

My mother’s voice was calm.

Confident.

Like she wasn’t making a random accusation.

Like she knew something.

I looked at Emily sleeping on the couch.

Her face was exhausted.

One hand was still resting protectively over our son.

The same woman I found crying in a kitchen full of dirty dishes.

The same woman who had spent months trying to keep peace.

Could she really be hiding something from me?

I hated that the thought even entered my mind.

Because trust was supposed to be the foundation of a marriage.

But my mother had planted a seed.

And now it was growing.

When Emily woke up, she immediately looked for me.

“Ethan?”

I walked over.

“I’m here.”

She smiled weakly.

“Did you sleep?”

I almost laughed.

No.

I hadn’t.

Not really.

“How are you feeling?”

“A little better.”

She touched her stomach.

“He’s moving.”

I smiled.

“That’s good.”

For a moment, everything felt normal.

Almost peaceful.

Then I remembered the video.

“Emily.”

Her smile faded.

“What?”

“There’s something I need to ask.”

Her fingers tightened.

“What is it?”

I sat beside her.

“I saw something on the security footage.”

The color slowly left her face.

“What did you see?”

I looked at her carefully.

“My mother said something.”

A pause.

“She said I don’t know the truth about your past.”

The room went silent.

Not angry.

Not dramatic.

Just silent.

And that silence hurt more than any answer.

Because I saw it.

The hesitation.

“Emily?”

She looked down.

“I was going to tell you.”

My chest tightened.

“Tell me what?”

She swallowed.

“I just didn’t know how.”

I waited.

The woman I loved was sitting in front of me.

Scared.

Not because she was guilty.

Because she was carrying something heavy.

“Five years ago…”

Her voice shook.

“Before I met you…”

She stopped.

Then whispered:

“I made a mistake.”

The words hit.

But I stayed quiet.

“What kind of mistake?”

She wiped her eyes.

“My family had problems.”

“Financial problems.”

“I was young.”

“I was desperate.”

She looked at me.

“I trusted the wrong person.”

“Who?”

She hesitated.

Then said:

“Your brother.”

I froze.

“My brother?”

She nodded.

“Michael.”

I couldn’t understand.

My brother Michael had died three years earlier.

A car accident.

Or at least…

That’s what everyone believed.

“What does Michael have to do with your past?”

Emily looked terrified.

“He helped me when I had nowhere to go.”

“And then…”

She stopped.

“Then what?”

Her voice became a whisper.

“He used it against me.”

I felt anger rising.

“What does that mean?”

She looked at her hands.

“He knew about my family’s debt.”

“He offered to help.”

“But later he threatened to expose things about me.”

My jaw tightened.

“My brother blackmailed you?”

She nodded.

The room felt colder.

Because suddenly pieces were connecting.

My mother protecting my sisters.

My mother attacking Emily.

The strange phone call.

Michael’s name.

“What did he want?”

Emily closed her eyes.

“He wanted money.”

“How much?”

“Twenty thousand dollars.”

I stared.

“Twenty thousand?”

She nodded.

“I paid him.”

“What?”

“I thought it was over.”

I stood up.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

She started crying.

“Because your family loved him.”

“Because after he died, I thought it was finally gone.”

I looked away.

Trying to process.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

“But I don’t think he was acting alone.”

I turned.

“What?”

Emily looked at me.

“There was someone else.”

“Someone who knew everything.”

“Someone who helped him.”

“Who?”

Her lips trembled.

“I don’t know.”

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?”

No response.

Only breathing.

“Who is this?”

Silence.

Then a voice.

A voice I recognized.

A voice that should have been impossible.

“Hello, Ethan.”

My blood froze.

Because it was Michael.

My hand dropped.

Emily looked at me.

“What happened?”

I couldn’t speak.

The voice continued.

“You finally found out.”

A pause.

“I was wondering how long it would take.”

My heart pounded.

“This is impossible.”

A quiet laugh.

“Is it?”

The call ended.

I stood frozen.

Because there was only one explanation.

Someone had been pretending Michael was dead.

Someone had been hiding for three years.

And somehow…

That person was connected to my own family.

Then another message appeared on my phone.

One photo.

A picture of Michael.

Alive.

Standing outside my apartment.

Taken that morning.

And beneath it…

Four words:

May you like

“Ask your mother why.”
