PART 6 — THE BROTHER WHO CAME BACK FOR REVENGE

PART 6 — THE BROTHER WHO CAME BACK FOR REVENGE
Michael stood in the doorway.
Alive.
Breathing.
Looking at me like the last three years had never happened.
Like he hadn’t let me believe I lost him forever.
Like I hadn’t stood beside his grave.
Like I hadn’t cried over a brother who was still walking the earth.
My first instinct was anger.
Not confusion.
Not relief.
Anger.
“What are you doing here?”
My voice came out colder than I expected.
Michael looked at me.
Then smiled sadly.
“That’s all you have to say?”
I laughed.
A broken laugh.
“You disappeared.”
“You let me bury you.”
“You let Mom lie to me.”
“And you’re asking what I have to say?”
His expression changed.
For the first time, the confidence disappeared.
“You don’t know the whole story.”
“No.”
I stepped forward.
“So tell me.”
Behind me, Emily was standing carefully.
One hand on her stomach.
Watching everything.
Michael noticed.
His eyes moved to her.
And something dark crossed his face.
“You told him.”
Emily froze.
I immediately moved between them.
“Don’t look at her.”
Michael smiled.
“You still protect her.”
I didn’t answer.
Because he was right.
I did.
But this time, I wasn’t protecting someone who needed saving.
I was protecting my family.
“Start talking.”
Michael sighed.
Then walked inside.
Closed the door.
And sat down.
Like he belonged there.
That alone made my blood boil.
“Three years ago,” he began.
“I got into trouble.”
I stared.
“What kind of trouble?”
He looked down.
“Debt.”
“Bad debt.”
I remembered my mother’s words.
Dangerous people.
Money.
Threats.
“I tried to fix it.”
Michael continued.
“I really did.”
“But every time I paid something, more appeared.”
“Then why fake your death?”
He looked at me.
“Because they were going to kill me.”
The room went quiet.
Even I didn’t expect that answer.
“I had two choices.”
“Disappear.”
“Or die.”
He looked at me.
“So I disappeared.”
I shook my head.
“You could have told me.”
He laughed softly.
“You think I didn’t want to?”
A pause.
“You were building your life.”
“You had Emily.”
“You had a future.”
“I didn’t want my problems destroying you.”
For a moment…
I almost understood.
Almost.
Then I remembered.
Three years of lies.
“You still should have told me.”
He nodded.
“You’re right.”
The honesty surprised me.
“But that’s not why you’re angry.”
He looked at me.
“You’re angry because Mom knew.”
I didn’t respond.
Because he was right again.
“Why did she hide it?”
Michael looked away.
“Because she was involved.”
The room froze.
“What?”
Emily gasped.
My heart stopped.
“My mother?”
Michael nodded.
“She helped me disappear.”
I stared at him.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“She thought she was protecting me.”
I shook my head.
“She lied to everyone.”
“She hurt me.”
“She hurt Dad.”
“She hurt the whole family.”
Michael’s voice lowered.
“She was scared.”
I laughed.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
“Scared.”
“Afraid.”
“Protecting.”
I looked at him.
“But nobody protected Emily.”
Michael went silent.
Then he said:
“You’re right.”
That answer caught me off guard.
Because I expected excuses.
Not agreement.
“What did you do to her?”
Michael looked at Emily.
His face changed.
Regret.
Real regret.
“I made mistakes.”
Emily’s eyes filled.
“You threatened me.”
“I know.”
“You scared me.”
“I know.”
She shook her head.
“You ruined years of my life.”
Michael lowered his eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
I stepped forward.
“Sorry isn’t enough.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
Then he reached into his jacket.
Pulled out a folder.
And placed it on the table.
“What is that?”
“Everything.”
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Bank records.
Messages.
Photos.
My hands started shaking.
Because there were messages between Michael and…
Teresa.
My mother.
I looked at him.
“What am I looking at?”
Michael answered quietly.
“The reason your family was falling apart.”
I read the first message.
My mother wrote:
“Ethan cannot know yet.”
Another message:
“Emily is becoming a problem.”
Another:
“We need to control the situation before the baby is born.”
My blood went cold.
“The baby?”
Michael nodded.
“That’s what this was really about.”
I looked at him.
“What does my son have to do with this?”
Michael took a deep breath.
Then said:
“Your wife’s family left something behind.”
I froze.
Not again.
Another secret.
“What?”
He looked at Emily.
Then at me.
“Before your wife died…”
“No.”
I stopped him.
“My wife?”
He nodded.
“Your first wife.”
My heart dropped.
“My first wife?”
Michael whispered:
“She discovered something about your family.”
The room went silent.
“What did she discover?”
Michael looked at the folder.
Then said:
“The reason she died.”
Everything stopped.
Emily grabbed my hand.
My entire body went numb.
Because suddenly…
The biggest lie wasn’t Michael being alive.
It wasn’t my mother hiding the truth.
The biggest lie…
May you like
Was that my first wife’s death had been an accident.
