PART 3 — The Woman Behind the Betrayal

PART 3 — The Woman Behind the Betrayal

The phone slipped slightly in my hand.

Not because I was afraid.

Because my mind refused to accept what had just happened.

My father's voice.

Two years after his funeral.

Two years after I watched his coffin disappear beneath the ground.

Two years after I forced myself to believe that the strongest man I knew was truly gone.

Impossible.

Yet I heard him.

Clear.

Calm.

Alive.

"Charlotte?"

William's voice pulled me back.

I looked up.

He was watching me carefully.

Not with concern.

With calculation.

"What did that call say?"

I stared at him.

And suddenly I realized something.

For the first time in eight years...

I couldn't read my husband.

I couldn't tell if he was worried.

Or pretending to be.

"I don't think you get to ask questions anymore."

His expression hardened.

"Excuse me?"

I looked down at the divorce papers.

Then at the folder.

Then at Sophia.

"Everyone in this room has been hiding something from me."

A pause.

"So I'm done explaining myself."

Sophia crossed her arms.

"You really think you're the victim here?"

I looked at her.

The confidence in her voice surprised me.

Most people would have been terrified.

But Sophia wasn't.

She looked like someone who knew something I didn't.

And that scared me more.

William grabbed the papers.

"You need to calm down."

The sentence.

The same sentence men always used when they wanted women to stop asking questions.

I smiled.

"I am calm."

I adjusted Oliver's blanket.

"Actually, I have never been clearer."

His eyes moved toward my son.

A small flash of guilt appeared.

Then disappeared.

"Charlotte, this isn't just about us anymore."

I looked at him.

"No."

"It isn't."

A pause.

"It's about him."

I touched Oliver's tiny hand.

"And I promise you..."

My voice lowered.

"You will never use my child to control me."

The conference room door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A man in a dark suit entered.

I recognized him immediately.

My family's chief legal advisor.

Jonathan Reed.

My father's closest friend.

William's face went pale.

"Jonathan?"

He nodded politely.

"Mr. Hawthorne."

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Because everyone knew what Jonathan Reed represented.

The Sterling family's response.

When he appeared...

It meant the situation had moved beyond personal.

It had become war.

He walked toward me.

"Charlotte."

His eyes softened when he saw Oliver.

"He's beautiful."

I nodded.

"Thank you."

Then he looked at William.

"Mr. Hawthorne, I believe we need to discuss several matters."

William forced a smile.

"This is a private divorce meeting."

Jonathan placed a thin envelope on the table.

"Not anymore."

Sophia looked nervous.

"What is that?"

Jonathan ignored her.

He looked at me.

"Before your father passed away, he left specific instructions."

My heart stopped.

"What instructions?"

Jonathan opened the envelope.

"That if William Hawthorne ever attempted to separate you from your child..."

A pause.

"...this document would be delivered."

William froze.

"What document?"

Jonathan turned the paper around.

I saw the title.

Emergency Protection Trust Activation.

My hands went cold.

"What is that?"

Jonathan answered quietly.

"Your father's final arrangement."

I frowned.

"My father created a trust?"

"Not exactly."

He looked at William.

"He created protection."

William laughed.

A nervous laugh.

"This is absurd."

Jonathan looked at him.

"Is it?"

He placed another document down.

"Because the trust contains records of every transaction between Hawthorne Financial and the Bennett Group."

Sophia went completely still.

William looked at her.

"What does he mean?"

For the first time...

She looked afraid.

"William..."

"No."

His voice sharpened.

"Tell me."

Jonathan answered for her.

"The company Sophia owns received over thirty million dollars from Hawthorne accounts."

William looked shocked.

"That's impossible."

I watched him.

And realized something.

He truly didn't know everything.

Which meant...

Sophia had been hiding things from him too.

Interesting.

Sophia suddenly stood.

"This is a misunderstanding."

Jonathan raised an eyebrow.

"Is it?"

She looked at William.

"You know I was only trying to help."

"Help?"

William's voice was cold.

"By moving my money?"

Her face changed.

"I can explain."

"No."

He stepped back.

"Explain why my wife has proof of everything before I do."

Silence.

The woman who thought she had replaced me...

Was suddenly alone.

But I wasn't finished.

I opened my black folder again.

Jonathan looked at me.

"Are you sure?"

I nodded.

"Yes."

He handed me a smaller envelope.

One I hadn't opened yet.

"This was found inside your father's private vault."

My fingers froze.

"My father?"

Jonathan nodded.

"He specifically requested that you open it only after you became a mother."

My heart tightened.

Slowly...

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

My father's handwriting.

The first line nearly broke me.

My dearest Charlotte,

My vision blurred.

Because after two years...

I was seeing his words again.

I continued reading.

If you are reading this, then you have a child.

And if you have a child, then you finally understand the responsibility of protecting someone who cannot protect themselves.

Tears filled my eyes.

I kept reading.

I am sorry I wasn't there to guide you.

But I need you to know something.

William Hawthorne was never the biggest threat.

I stopped.

My heart pounded.

I looked at Jonathan.

He said nothing.

I continued.

The betrayal you discover will not come from an enemy.

It will come from someone carrying your last name.

The room went silent.

My hands shook.

My last name.

Sterling.

My family.

Not Hawthorne.

Not Sophia.

Someone from my own blood.

Then the final sentence appeared.

Charlotte, do not trust your mother.

I stopped breathing.

Because my mother had died when I was ten.

At least...

That was what everyone told me.

I slowly looked up.

Jonathan's expression had changed.

He looked like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.

"Charlotte."

My voice was barely a whisper.

"What aren't you telling me?"

Jonathan looked toward the window.

Then said:

"Your mother isn't dead."

The room froze.

And behind me...

William whispered:

"That's impossible."

Jonathan turned.

"No."

A pause.

May you like

"What's impossible..."

"...is believing the Sterling family ever told you the truth."
