PART 8 — The Child Everyone Wanted

PART 8 — The Child Everyone Wanted
The room stopped existing.
At least, that's what it felt like.
Because the only thing I could see was him.
The man standing at the doorway.
The man holding a weapon.
The man whose face had haunted every childhood memory.
My father.
Not a photograph.
Not a recording.
Not a memory.
Alive.
Again.
My hands tightened around Oliver.
The baby stirred slightly.
His tiny fingers moved against my coat.
And that small movement brought me back.
Because no matter how impossible this moment was...
I was still his mother.
And my first instinct was simple.
Protect him.
The man lowered the gun immediately.
"I know what this looks like."
I stared.
"What it looks like?"
My voice shook.
"You disappeared."
A pause.
"You died."
His face changed.
Pain.
Regret.
The same expression I had seen on Elizabeth's face.
"I know."
I laughed softly.
A broken laugh.
"Everyone knows."
Nobody spoke.
Because there was nothing to say.
Every person in this room had a reason.
Every person had an excuse.
And every excuse had destroyed me.
"Why?"
My voice became quieter.
"Why did you let me believe you were dead?"
He looked at me.
And for the first time...
I saw my father not as the powerful man everyone described.
Not as the Sterling protector.
Not as the billionaire.
Just a man who had lost everything.
"Because I failed."
The honesty surprised me.
"I thought I could protect you."
A pause.
"I was wrong."
William stepped forward.
"Who are you really?"
My father looked at him.
The expression on his face changed.
Cold.
"You don't get to ask questions."
William frowned.
"You've been manipulating her."
My father laughed bitterly.
"That's rich coming from you."
The words hit.
William went silent.
Because everyone knew.
He had no argument.
My father looked at Sophia.
"You."
She froze.
"Me?"
"Yes."
His voice hardened.
"You were supposed to protect her."
Sophia looked away.
"I tried."
"No."
His answer was immediate.
"You protected Margaret."
The room went silent.
Sophia's face changed.
And I realized...
She had betrayed everyone.
But maybe she had never been loyal to anyone except my grandmother.
I looked at my father.
"Start talking."
Everyone turned.
Because my voice was different.
Not emotional.
Not broken.
Determined.
"You have five minutes."
He looked at me.
Then nodded.
"You deserve the truth."
He placed the weapon on the table.
"I was investigating your grandmother."
My heart tightened.
"Margaret?"
He nodded.
"She built an empire, Charlotte."
A pause.
"But not just a business empire."
He looked around.
"She built control."
"The Sterlings."
"The Hawthornes."
"Every major family connected to finance, politics, and technology."
"She created agreements."
"Secrets."
"Leverage."
I frowned.
"And why?"
His answer was simple.
"Because she believed people could not be trusted with freedom."
Silence.
"She thought the world needed one person controlling everything."
My father looked at Oliver.
"And then you were born."
I swallowed.
"Me?"
He nodded.
"Your birth changed everything."
"Why?"
"Because Margaret realized something."
A pause.
"Power without loyalty creates rebellion."
I looked confused.
"So?"
"She needed someone who could inherit everything."
"Someone who could unite all the families."
"And she believed you were that person."
I felt sick.
"I was a baby."
"I know."
His voice softened.
"That's why your parents tried to hide you."
I looked at Elizabeth.
Then back.
"You mean my real parents."
He nodded.
"Yes."
The words still felt strange.
My real parents.
After twenty-eight years.
My father continued.
"When you were six months old, Margaret found out Elizabeth was trying to escape."
Elizabeth looked down.
"I was going to take Charlotte away."
My father nodded.
"But Margaret stopped you."
"She couldn't take the baby directly because too many people were watching."
"So she created another plan."
My stomach tightened.
"The adoption."
My father nodded.
"The Sterling family raised you."
"Your identity was changed."
"Your records were altered."
"You became Charlotte Sterling."
The name suddenly felt heavier.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
He looked at me.
"Because Margaret was still watching."
A pause.
"And because I discovered something worse."
"What?"
He looked at Oliver.
"She wasn't planning for you anymore."
Silence.
"She was planning for your child."
The room became cold.
Even William looked disturbed.
My father continued:
"When you married William, Margaret was happy."
I stared.
"Why?"
"Because the Hawthornes had something she needed."
"What?"
"The Hawthorne bloodline."
My face changed.
"You mean..."
He nodded.
"Oliver."
I looked down.
My baby.
"Why him?"
My father hesitated.
Then answered:
"Because Oliver is the first child born from both bloodlines."
The room went silent.
"The Sterlings."
"The Hawthornes."
"Combined."
A pause.
"He has access to everything."
My arms tightened around him.
"No."
My father looked at me.
"I know."
"That's why I came back."
The old Hawthorne patriarch suddenly laughed.
Everyone turned.
He looked at my father.
"You still think you can stop her?"
My father stared.
"Where is Margaret?"
The old man smiled.
"Closer than you think."
The lights flickered.
Again.
Everyone looked around.
Then the conference room screen turned on.
A woman appeared.
Older.
Elegant.
Calm.
My grandmother.
Margaret Sterling.
Alive.
She smiled.
And somehow...
She looked exactly like the woman from my childhood.
The woman who taught me chess.
The woman who told me:
"Never trust anyone completely."
I felt my chest tighten.
Because I remembered.
She had always been preparing me.
For this.
"Hello, Charlotte."
Her voice filled the room.
Nobody moved.
My father stepped forward.
"Margaret."
She smiled.
"Still protecting her?"
A pause.
"After all these years?"
My father said nothing.
She looked at me.
Then at Oliver.
And her expression softened.
Almost lovingly.
"My grandson."
I immediately turned my body.
Blocking her view.
Margaret smiled.
"Still protective."
A pause.
"Good."
I narrowed my eyes.
"What do you want?"
Her answer was immediate.
"You."
A pause.
"Not your money."
"Not your company."
"Not your name."
She looked at Oliver.
"I want what you created."
I frowned.
"What did I create?"
Margaret smiled.
"The perfect heir."
I felt cold.
"No."
She continued:
"Charlotte, you still don't understand."
A pause.
"You think this is about inheritance."
"It isn't."
The screen changed.
A file appeared.
STERLING PROJECT: ORIGIN
My blood froze.
"What is that?"
Margaret looked directly at me.
"The truth."
A pause.
"About who you really are."
The file opened.
The first page appeared.
And one sentence destroyed everything:
Charlotte Sterling was not born human by accident.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
May you like
Then Margaret said:
"Now you will finally learn why everyone has been fighting over you since the day you were born."
