PART 5 — The Secret of Oliver's Birth

PART 5 — The Secret of Oliver's Birth

The question hit me harder than anything else.

Where is your son's birth bracelet?

For a moment, I didn't understand.

My mind was still trapped on the letter.

On the warning.

On the impossible truth that my father had somehow predicted all of this.

I looked down at Oliver.

My son.

My tiny, sleeping baby.

His little hand rested against my chest.

Perfect.

Safe.

I swallowed.

"The bracelet?"

Jonathan nodded.

"The hospital bracelet."

My heart started beating faster.

"It's in my hospital bag."

"No."

Jonathan's voice was immediate.

"Charlotte."

He stepped closer.

"Look at him."

I looked down.

Confused.

"What?"

"The bracelet on his wrist."

I froze.

Slowly...

I pulled back the blanket.

Oliver's tiny wrist appeared.

A white hospital band.

I stared.

Then my blood went cold.

Because I suddenly remembered.

When I left the hospital...

A nurse had said something strange.

Something I ignored.

"Mrs. Sterling, we'll replace that band before discharge."

But then another nurse came in.

And told me it was already done.

I was exhausted.

I had just given birth.

I didn't question it.

I trusted them.

And now...

I realized I had never actually checked it.

My fingers shook as I reached for it.

"Charlotte?"

William's voice was quiet.

Almost worried.

I ignored him.

I carefully removed the bracelet.

And looked.

The name was printed clearly.

Oliver Hawthorne Sterling

But underneath...

There was another number.

A code.

Not a hospital number.

Something else.

Jonathan's face changed.

"You see it."

I looked up.

"What is this?"

He didn't answer.

Because someone else did.

The old Hawthorne patriarch.

He smiled.

"Your father knew."

I turned toward him.

"Knew what?"

He walked closer.

"That someone would try to replace your son."

The room went silent.

My arms immediately tightened around Oliver.

"What?"

William looked horrified.

"Replace?"

The old man nodded.

"Children born into powerful families are not always children."

A pause.

"Sometimes they are keys."

I felt sick.

"Stop talking in riddles."

My voice shook.

"Explain."

He looked at Oliver.

"Your son inherited something."

Jonathan interrupted.

"Enough."

The old man smiled.

"You still think protecting her means hiding things."

Then he looked at me.

"Your father created a trust."

"Not a financial trust."

"A bloodline trust."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

He answered:

"Only a direct descendant of the Sterling line can access it."

A pause.

"And Oliver is the next heir."

I stared.

"He is a baby."

"Exactly."

His smile disappeared.

"Which makes him easy to control."

The room felt colder.

Every word sounded impossible.

But after everything...

Impossible had become normal.

I looked at William.

The man who was supposed to be my partner.

The father of my child.

"Did you know?"

His face changed.

"Charlotte..."

"Did you know?"

He looked away.

That was enough.

My heart broke.

Not because I was surprised.

Because some small part of me still hoped.

Still hoped he would say no.

Still hoped he was different.

"You knew."

William stepped forward.

"I knew there were concerns."

"Concerns?"

My voice rose.

"You knew someone was targeting our son?"

"I was trying to protect you."

I almost laughed.

Everyone said that.

Everyone used those words.

Protect.

Help.

Love.

And every time...

They hurt me.

"You left me alone in the hospital."

His face fell.

"Charlotte—"

"You ignored my calls."

"I was trying to handle it."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You were trying to handle me."

Silence.

Because he knew.

Sophia suddenly spoke.

"You don't understand what you're dealing with."

Everyone looked at her.

She looked nervous.

But not scared.

Not anymore.

Interesting.

"What do you mean?"

She looked at me.

"The baby isn't the only thing."

A pause.

"Your father left more."

I stared.

"What?"

She swallowed.

"There is another account."

Jonathan immediately turned.

"Sophia."

But she continued.

"An offshore account."

"Created twenty years ago."

My blood froze.

"By who?"

She looked toward the old man.

"By your mother."

Silence.

My mother.

Again.

The woman who was dead.

The woman who was alive.

The woman connected to every secret.

"Why?"

Sophia looked at me.

"Because she knew."

"Knew what?"

Sophia hesitated.

Then said:

"That the Sterling family wasn't protecting you."

A pause.

"They were protecting themselves from you."

The room went completely silent.

Before I could respond...

The lights went out.

The entire office building went dark.

People screamed outside.

Emergency alarms started.

Jonathan immediately moved.

"Everyone stay back."

Security rushed in.

William grabbed my arm.

I pulled away.

"Don't touch me."

His face hurt.

But he listened.

Because he finally understood.

He didn't have my trust anymore.

A few seconds later...

The emergency lights turned on.

Red.

Flashing.

A message appeared on the conference room screen.

Nobody touched the computer.

But words appeared.

CHARLOTTE STERLING.

Everyone froze.

Then another line.

YOU HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THE TRUTH.

A pause.

NOW YOU WILL SEE IT.

The screen changed.

A video started playing.

The quality was old.

Grainy.

But the woman in the video was clear.

My mother.

Alive.

Younger.

Sitting in a dark room.

My breath stopped.

She looked directly into the camera.

And then she spoke.

"Charlotte."

My eyes filled.

Her voice.

After all these years.

"If you're watching this..."

She paused.

"I failed to keep you away from them."

The video continued.

My mother looked terrified.

Not powerful.

Not like someone controlling everything.

Like someone running out of time.

"Your father believed the enemy was inside the Hawthorne family."

She looked away.

"But he was wrong."

A pause.

"The danger started with us."

My heart dropped.

She continued:

"Charlotte, there is something you need to know about your birth."

The room went silent.

Even William looked shocked.

My mother whispered:

"You were never my biological daughter."

The world stopped.

Oliver stirred in my arms.

And I couldn't breathe.

Because the next words destroyed everything I believed about myself.

"The Sterling family adopted you."

A pause.

"And the people who know where you really came from..."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Will do anything to make sure you never find out."

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

Then the door opened.

A woman stood outside.

Older.

Elegant.

Familiar.

And every person in the room recognized her.

Jonathan whispered:

"No..."

The woman smiled.

"My name is Elizabeth."

A pause.

"Charlotte..."

May you like

She looked at me.

"I'm your birth mother."
