PART 9 — The Origin Secret

PART 9 — The Origin Secret
Nobody understood the sentence.
Not at first.
Because it was too impossible.
Too absurd.
Too terrifying.
Charlotte Sterling was not born human by accident.
I stared at the screen.
Reading the words again.
And again.
Waiting for them to change.
Waiting for someone to laugh.
To admit this was another manipulation.
Another cruel game.
But nobody laughed.
My father looked devastated.
Elizabeth looked terrified.
Jonathan looked like he had known this moment would come.
And Margaret...
My grandmother...
Looked calm.
Like she had been waiting years to finally say it.
"What does that mean?"
My voice was barely a whisper.
Margaret smiled.
"I knew you would ask that."
"Then answer."
She leaned closer to the camera.
"You spent your entire life believing you were born into a family."
A pause.
"But the truth is..."
"You were created for one."
The room went silent.
My hands shook.
I looked at Oliver.
My baby.
The one person who felt real.
The one thing in my life that had never betrayed me.
And suddenly...
I wondered.
Was even that true?
My father stepped forward.
"Enough."
Margaret looked at him.
"You always were sentimental."
"You don't get to explain this to her."
"No."
She smiled.
"I get to finish what I started."
My father’s face hardened.
"You destroyed everyone."
Margaret didn't deny it.
"I built something greater."
I stared at the screen.
"Stop talking like I'm a project."
The room went quiet.
Margaret looked at me.
And for the first time...
I saw something in her eyes.
Pride.
Not love.
Not regret.
Pride.
"You are special."
"No."
My voice became stronger.
"I'm a person."
A pause.
"Not a possession."
Margaret smiled.
"That answer is exactly why I chose you."
The screen changed.
Old documents appeared.
Medical files.
Research papers.
Names.
Dates.
My name.
My birth date.
My hands became cold.
Because the documents were real.
Too real.
"What is this?"
Jonathan answered quietly.
"The truth your father tried to hide."
I looked at him.
"You knew?"
He lowered his eyes.
"Some of it."
The betrayal hurt.
Again.
Everyone had known.
Everyone had watched me live a lie.
My entire life.
"Explain."
Nobody spoke.
Then Elizabeth stepped forward.
"I will."
Everyone looked at her.
She looked at me.
"Before you were born..."
A pause.
"I was part of a research program."
My heart sank.
"What?"
She looked ashamed.
"Not a medical experiment."
"Not what you're thinking."
"Then what?"
She swallowed.
"A program studying inheritance."
I frowned.
"Genetics?"
She nodded.
"Family traits."
"Memory."
"Intelligence."
"Decision-making."
The room felt colder.
Margaret continued from the screen.
"Humanity wastes generations."
A pause.
"Every child starts from nothing."
"I wanted to change that."
I stared.
"You wanted to create a perfect person."
She smiled.
"Yes."
The word was terrifying because she said it proudly.
My father looked at me.
"Your mother was forced into it."
Elizabeth shook her head.
"No."
Everyone turned.
She looked at me.
"I agreed."
My heart broke.
Not because she admitted it.
Because I saw the pain on her face.
"I was young."
"I believed I could help create something that would change the world."
A pause.
"Then I met your father."
She looked at him.
"And we realized what Margaret really wanted."
"Control."
Elizabeth nodded.
"Not improvement."
"Not protection."
"Control."
Margaret interrupted.
"You are both being dramatic."
She looked at me.
"Charlotte, listen carefully."
"You were never a machine."
"You were never a test."
A pause.
"You were the first person to successfully inherit enhanced traits from multiple bloodlines."
I froze.
"What traits?"
She answered:
"Memory."
"Pattern recognition."
"Emotional intelligence."
"Strategic thinking."
I laughed bitterly.
"So I'm smart?"
"No."
Her answer was immediate.
"You're more than that."
A pause.
"Your brain processes information differently."
I shook my head.
"No."
Because suddenly...
Memories came back.
Small things.
Moments I never understood.
Being five years old and remembering entire books.
Knowing when adults were lying.
Seeing patterns others missed.
Everyone called me gifted.
I called myself normal.
But maybe...
Neither was true.
William suddenly spoke.
"Is that why?"
Everyone turned.
He looked at me.
Pain filled his face.
"Is that why Margaret arranged our marriage?"
Nobody answered.
And that was the answer.
My stomach twisted.
My marriage.
My love.
My child.
All planned.
William whispered:
"I really was just a piece."
For the first time...
I felt something for him.
Not forgiveness.
But understanding.
Because he had been used too.
Sophia looked away.
Margaret continued.
"William was chosen because the Hawthorne bloodline carried what you needed."
I stared.
"Needed?"
She nodded.
"To complete the inheritance."
I looked at Oliver.
"No."
Margaret's expression softened.
"Charlotte."
"No."
My voice became louder.
"You don't get to talk about my son like he's a formula."
She smiled.
"There it is."
"What?"
"The thing I could never create."
A pause.
"Free will."
The room became silent.
Suddenly...
The doors opened.
Security entered.
But they weren't Jonathan's people.
They were Margaret's.
Everyone froze.
My father moved immediately.
"Charlotte."
I grabbed Oliver.
"I know."
The guards surrounded the room.
Margaret's voice continued through the speakers.
"Bring them to me."
My father's face changed.
"Where is she?"
Nobody answered.
Then the elevator outside opened.
A woman walked in.
Older.
Elegant.
Holding a cane.
Margaret.
Not a screen.
The real Margaret.
Alive.
Standing in front of me.
Everyone froze.
She looked at me.
Then at Oliver.
And smiled.
"My granddaughter."
I stepped back.
"No."
She looked hurt.
"After everything I've done?"
I laughed.
"Everything you've done?"
A pause.
"You destroyed my life."
She nodded.
"I shaped it."
"No."
I looked at her.
"You controlled it."
Margaret studied me.
Then smiled.
"Good."
A pause.
"You're finally becoming yourself."
I frowned.
"What?"
She looked toward the guards.
"Take everyone except Charlotte and the baby."
My father stepped forward.
"Over my dead body."
Margaret looked at him.
"You already tried that."
The room froze.
Then she looked back at me.
"Charlotte."
A pause.
"I didn't bring you here to take Oliver."
I stared.
"Then why?"
She walked closer.
And whispered:
"Because I need you to save him."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
Margaret's face changed.
For the first time...
Real fear appeared.
"The project failed."
A pause.
"Not with you."
"With him."
She looked at Oliver.
"Your son is dying."
The world went silent.
"What?"
Margaret opened a folder.
Medical reports.
Oliver's name.
I couldn't breathe.
"That's impossible."
She shook her head.
"No."
A pause.
"The inheritance came with a cost."
My hands started shaking.
"What cost?"
Margaret looked at me.
"The traits you carry..."
A pause.
"Are unstable."
She whispered:
"And Oliver inherited the instability."
I felt the room disappear.
My baby.
My perfect little boy.
"How do I save him?"
Margaret looked at me.
And said:
"By finishing what I started."
I stepped back.
"No."
She smiled sadly.
"Then he dies."
Silence.
And suddenly...
Every lie.
Every betrayal.
Every secret.
Had led to one choice.
May you like
Save my son.
Or destroy the truth forever.
