Chapter 5 - The Gathering of Shadows

By 10:15 AM, St. James Cathedral in downtown Chicago was transformed into a sanctuary of obscene wealth.

Massive arches of white roses and imported orchids climbed the gothic stone pillars. The wooden pews were packed with three hundred guests dressed in designer morning suits, silk dresses, and millions of dollars' worth of diamond jewelry. Senators, federal judges, corporate executives, and hedge fund managers spoke in hushed, polite tones, their voices echoing off the vaulted ceilings.

I sat in the fourth row on the bride's side, wearing my dark charcoal suit. I looked entirely unremarkable—a quiet family member sitting alone, holding a small leather clutch in my lap.

Across the center aisle, sitting in the front row on the groom's side, was Richard Sterling.

He was a tall, silver-haired man in his late fifties, dressed in a bespoke charcoal tuxedo with a white orchid pinned to his lapel. He radiated unyielding authority. He sat with his hands resting casually on his knees, nodding politely to passing guests as if he were receiving subjects in his private court.

Next to him sat his wife, Victoria Sterling, dripping in South Sea pearls, her face frozen in a rigid, aristocratic sneer.

Up at the altar, Ethan Sterling adjusted his white gold cufflinks.

He looked extraordinarily handsome—tall, broad-shouldered, with perfectly styled brown hair. But as I watched him from my seat, I saw the subtle signs of his true nature. The restless shifting of his feet. The arrogant, impatient twitch of his jaw as he checked his platinum Patek Philippe watch. The way his eyes scanned the church not with love or anticipation, but with the cold, possessive satisfaction of a man waiting to claim a new piece of property.

He looked down at his phone, his thumb flying across the screen.

In my lap, my personal phone buzzed silently.

It was an intercepted ping from Ethan’s phone, routed through my audit terminal. He had just sent a text to Emily.

Ethan: "You better be in the car, Emily. My father is looking at his watch. Don't embarrass me today, or your family pays the price before dinner."

I stared at the text on my screen. My pulse didn't spike. My hands didn't shake.

I clicked on my messaging app, selected Emily’s burner phone, and held my thumb over the screen.

I looked up at Ethan. He was standing near the altar, holding a smug, tight smile as the organist began playing the soft prelude music.

I checked the time on my phone.

10:28 AM.

Out on Michigan Avenue, three miles away, twenty federal vehicles were silently turning off their sirens as they pulled up to the curb of Sterling Global Holdings' corporate headquarters. Simultaneously, IRS Criminal Investigation agents were freezing twenty-four offshore bank accounts linked to Sterling Apex Capital.

My phone chimed with a private notification from Mark Vance:

Mark: "Headquarters locked down. Offshore accounts frozen. We are four minutes out from the church."

I looked up at the stained-glass windows towering over the altar. The sun was breaking through the rain clouds, casting long, crimson and gold beams across the stone floor.

I hit send.

Claire: "NOW."
