Chapter 7 - The Federal Entry

The chatter inside the cathedral died instantly. Three hundred heads snapped toward the back entrance.

Standing in the frame of the tall arched doorway were eight federal agents dressed in dark blue tactical jackets bearing bold, yellow lettering across their chests and backs:

IRS-CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION

Leading the group was Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Thorne, dressed in a sharp navy suit, carrying a thick leather briefcase. Beside him was my ex-husband, Mark Vance, holding a rolled stack of official federal documents. Behind them stood four armed United States Marshals in tactical vests.

The sight of federal law enforcement marching into a high-society cathedral was so absurd, so unprecedented, that for three seconds, no one moved or spoke.

Richard Sterling froze, his phone still held to his ear.

Ethan stood near the altar, his face contorted in a mix of confusion and rising panic.

Marcus Thorne stepped onto the central carpet aisle, his leather soles clicking sharply against the stone floor as he walked toward the altar. The four marshals followed, their heavy tactical boots creating a rhythm that sounded like a drumbeat of doom.

"Richard Sterling!" Marcus's deep, authoritative voice echoed off the vaulted ceiling, silencing the entire room. "Ethan Sterling! Stand where you are!"

Richard stepped out into the center aisle, trying to regain his composure, pulling his shoulders back and adopting his familiar, imperious glare. "What is the meaning of this outrage?! Who gave you permission to barge into a private religious ceremony?!"

Marcus stopped ten feet away from Richard, reaching into his suit jacket and pulling out a folded white document bearing the seal of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

"Richard Sterling," Marcus said calmly, his voice ringing out clearly for every senator, judge, and reporter in the church to hear. "I am Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Thorne. I hold in my hand a federal arrest warrant issued by Judge Rebecca Vance."

A collective, sharp gasp rippled through the congregation.

"You are under arrest for multi-count bank fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit securities fraud, and operating a multi-billion-dollar fraudulent real estate scheme through Sterling Apex Capital," Marcus announced loudly.

Richard’s face turned an ugly, mottled gray. "This... this is absurd! My lawyers will have you stripped of your license by lunch! Sterling Global is a solvent, multi-billion-dollar corporation!"

Mark Vance stepped forward, holding a tablet screen up toward Richard. "Not anymore, Mr. Sterling. At 10:30 AM, federal agents executed search warrants on your corporate headquarters on LaSalle Street. Your central servers have been seized. Your offshore accounts in Grand Cayman, Zurich, and London have been frozen by federal order."

Mark glanced around at the terrified, wealthy guests in the pews. "And for those of you who were planning to invest in the Sterling Real Estate Fund this afternoon... I suggest you call your financial advisors immediately. Sterling Global Holdings is bankrupt."

Pandemonium broke out inside the cathedral.

Society women shrieked. Corporate executives whipped out their phones, frantically trying to sell their shares or call their brokers. Senators quietly slid out of their pews, trying to blend into the shadows near the side exits, desperate to distance themselves from the radioactive family.

"This is a mistake!" Richard roared, his voice cracking with desperate, unhinged fury. "Where is my legal counsel?! Call the State Attorney General!"

"The State Attorney General is currently reviewing federal conflict-of-interest charges regarding his campaign donations from your shell accounts, Richard," Marcus replied coolly. "You're going to federal holding."

Two US Marshals stepped forward, grabbed Richard Sterling's arms, forced them behind his back, and clicked heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

The sound of the metal lock snapping shut echoed through the sacred room like a falling guillotine.
