Chapter 9 - The Aftermath

By 4:00 PM that afternoon, the Sterling scandal was the number one news story in the nation.

Every major television network aired footage of Richard Sterling—the billionaire real estate titan—being led out of St. James Cathedral in handcuffs, his expensive suit rumpled, his head bowed as news cameras flashed furiously in his face. Right behind him was Ethan, his nose bandaged, weeping as federal agents loaded him into the back of an armored SUV.

Underneath the rolling news banners read: STERLING REAL ESTATE EMPIRE COLLAPSES: $3B FRAUD EXPOSED AT ALTAR. GOLD COAST HEIR ARRESTED FOR FELONY DOMESTIC ABUSE AND EXTORTION.

Inside my Lincoln Park apartment, the atmosphere was quiet, warm, and peaceful.

Emily sat on my plush living room couch, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, holding a mug of hot tea. The color had finally returned to her cheeks. She was watching the news broadcast on my wall-mounted TV, watching the men who had terrified her for months being marched into the Federal Center in downtown Chicago.

My father sat beside her, gently rubbing her shoulder, while my mother was in the kitchen, making a fresh batch of soup.

The doorbell rang.

I walked over and opened the door. Mark Vance stood in the hallway, wearing his trench coat, holding a thick brown folder under his arm.

"Can I come in?" Mark asked gently.

"Of course," I said, stepping aside.

Mark walked into the living room, nodding respectfully to my parents and Emily before setting the folder down on the coffee table.

"I just came from the United States Attorney's office," Mark said, taking a seat in an armchair across from Emily. "I wanted to give you an update directly."

Emily looked up from her tea. "Are they... are they going to get out on bail?"

Mark smiled reassuringly. "Judge Rebecca Vance presided over their arraignment two hours ago. Given Richard Sterling's vast offshore connections and private aircraft access, she deemed him a extreme flight risk. Bail was denied. He will remain in federal custody at the Metropolitan Correctional Center pending trial."

Emily let out a long, shuddering breath, her shoulders dropping three inches as months of tension vanished from her body.

"And Ethan?" I asked, leaning against the doorway.

"Ethan's bail was set at five million dollars," Mark replied. "But since all of his bank accounts, personal property, and equity shares have been seized or frozen by his private lenders and federal marshals, he couldn't raise fifty dollars to buy a sandwich, let alone five million. He's sitting in a holding cell right beside his father."

Mark pulled a single legal document from the folder and pushed it across the table to my father.

"Mr. Vance," Mark said softly. "This is a court order signed by the federal trustee overseeing the Sterling liquidation. All predatory debt claims acquired by Sterling Apex Capital against your restaurant and your home have been formally voided as fruits of a criminal enterprise. You owe nothing. Your debt is gone."

My father stared at the document, his calloused hands trembling as he touched the official seal. He looked up at Mark, then turned to look at me, tears streaming down his weathered cheeks.

"Claire..." my father whispered, his voice choking with emotion. "You... you saved us."

I walked over, sitting on the arm of the couch, resting my arm around my father's shoulders and pulling Emily close to my side.

"We save each other, Dad," I whispered, looking at my sister. "That's what family does."
