Chapter 8 - The Price of Violence

While his father was being cuffed in the center aisle, Ethan Sterling took a slow, terrified step backward toward the altar, looking for a side door or an escape route.

His face was completely devoid of color, sweating profusely beneath his styled hair.

"Wait... wait!" Ethan stammered, holding his hands up defensively as two federal marshals and Mark Vance turned their attention toward the altar. "I didn't run the corporate accounts! I'm just an acquisitions officer! My father ran the firm! I didn't sign the lease documents!"

"We're not just here for bank fraud, Ethan," Mark Vance said, stepping up onto the altar platform, his eyes locking onto Ethan with pure disgust.

Ethan blinked, horrified. "What?"

Mark pulled a second set of arrest warrants from his folder. "Ethan Sterling, you are under arrest for felony aggravated domestic battery, witness intimidation, and felony extortion."

Ethan froze, his eyes widening in complete, utter terror. "What?! That's... that's crazy! Who told you that?! Emily?! She's lying! She's a gold-digging lunatic! She made it up!"

I stood up from my seat in the fourth row.

The movement was smooth, quiet, and unmistakable. I stepped out into the center aisle, walking past the handcuffed Richard Sterling, and stopped right beside Mark Vance at the foot of the altar.

Ethan looked down at me, his eyes bulging. "Claire? What... what are you doing? Tell them! Tell them Emily is crazy!"

I reached into my leather clutch, pulled out a clear, high-resolution color printout, and held it up directly in front of Ethan’s face.

It was a photo of Emily’s back—showing the deep, brutal purple bruises left by his fingers, stamped with clear GPS coordinates and a timestamp matching his apartment three nights ago.

"Is this crazy, Ethan?" I asked, my voice calm, cold, and carrying effortlessly across the quiet room.

Ethan stared at the photo, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

"We also have forty-two voice notes," I continued, stepping up one tier of the altar stairs. "Including the one you sent her at 1:15 AM on Tuesday, where you explicitly stated that your father would use fraudulent loan defaults to bankrupt our parents if she didn't obey you."

"You..." Ethan breathed, horror dawning on him as he looked at my charcoal suit, my calm demeanor, and the federal prosecutor standing beside me. "You... you did this..."

"I told you yesterday, Ethan," I said, leaning in so only he could hear me over the chaotic noise of the church. "You thought you were marrying a victim. You didn't realize you were inviting an auditor into your house."

"You ruined my life!" Ethan screamed, losing his mind completely, lunging forward toward me with his hands clawed. "You crazy bitch! I'll kill you!"

Before he could take two steps, the two heavily armed US Marshals slammed him down onto the cold marble floor of the altar.

CRACK.

Ethan’s face slammed against the marble. A loud groan of pain escaped his lips as his arms were violently twisted behind his back. Steel handcuffs clicked tight around his wrists.

"Ethan Sterling," Mark Vance said, kneeling beside him and speaking into his ear. "Your personal line of credit with Vanguard Apex had a default clause tied to criminal charges. As of two minutes ago, your loan went into immediate default. They have initiated emergency foreclosure on your penthouse, your yacht, and your luxury vehicles. You are completely bankrupt, Ethan."

Ethan lay on the marble floor of the church, weeping hysterically, his nose bleeding onto his custom white tuxedo shirt, his cries echoing pathetically under the stained-glass windows of St. James Cathedral.

I turned around, facing the congregation.

My mother and father were sitting in the front row. My father had his arm tightly wrapped around my mother, staring at the ruined, handcuffed Sterlings with a mixture of shock and profound, overwhelming relief.

I walked down the altar steps, took my father's hand, and smiled softly.

"Come on, Dad," I said gently. "Let's go home."
