Chapter 4: The Woman Behind the Messages

I thought losing Ethan was the hardest pain I would ever survive.
I was wrong.
Because grief was simple.
It was horrible.
It was unbearable.
But it was honest.
The betrayal was different.
Betrayal made me question every memory I had ever trusted.
Every morning Garrett kissed my forehead before work.
Every night he told Ethan bedtime stories.
Every family vacation.
Every promise.
I didn't know which moments were real anymore.
By noon, the story had spread through the hospital.
Not the details.
Just enough.
A father who wasn't there.
A wife who discovered why.
A family falling apart in public.
I hated that people whispered.
I hated that strangers looked at me with pity.
But most of all...
I hated that somewhere in the world, Melissa Carter was still living normally.
Eating breakfast.
Answering emails.
Laughing.
While my son was gone.
My brother James found her address.
I didn't ask how.
With the Sterling name, information had a way of appearing.
He walked into my hospital room carrying a folder.
"Claire."
I looked up.
"Don't."
He stopped.
"I know what you're thinking."
"Do you?"
He softened.
"You want to see her."
I looked away.
"I want to understand."
James sat beside me.
"There may not be an explanation that makes this better."
"I know."
"But I need to know if Ethan died while Garrett was just careless..."
My voice broke.
"...or if someone helped him choose."
That sentence changed everything.
Because suddenly I remembered.
The past year.
Garrett's strange behavior.
The arguments.
The distance.
The way he started locking his phone.
The way he stopped talking about work.
I had assumed he was falling out of love.
But what if it was something else?
The folder contained photographs.
Melissa.
Garrett.
Together.
Not just once.
Not just recently.
Months.
Hotels.
Restaurants.
Trips.
Then James placed another document on top.
A property record.
A condo in downtown Boston.
Purchased eight months earlier.
Owner:
Melissa Carter.
The mortgage company?
A subsidiary connected to Garrett's business.
I stared.
"He bought her a home?"
James nodded.
"Looks like it."
I felt something inside me go cold.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Clarity.
The door opened.
Garrett entered.
This time, William wasn't with him.
Just him.
Alone.
He looked at the folder.
He knew.
"What did you find?"
I laughed softly.
"Why?"
His eyes filled.
"Claire..."
"Why did you do this?"
He sat down.
"I don't know."
That answer hurt more than an excuse.
"You don't know?"
"I was selfish."
"That's all?"
He looked at the floor.
"I felt trapped."
The word stayed there.
Trapped.
I stared at him.
"Trapped?"
"Yes."
My hands started shaking.
"By what?"
He looked at me.
"By being someone else's son."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Garrett leaned back.
"When I met you, I was tired."
"Tired of what?"
"Your family."
I almost laughed.
"My family?"
"You grew up with everything."
"I didn't want that life."
"But you still had it."
He rubbed his face.
"My whole life was being measured against William Sterling."
"Every deal."
"Every decision."
"Every mistake."
His voice cracked.
"I was never enough."
For a second...
I almost understood.
Not forgave.
Never that.
But understood.
Then he ruined it.
"Melissa made me feel like I was someone."
The room went silent.
I looked at him.
"So while you felt insecure..."
"...you destroyed our son?"
His face collapsed.
"No."
"Yes."
I stood.
"You chose a woman who made you feel powerful."
"You chose hotel rooms."
"You chose lies."
"And Ethan paid for it."
Garrett started crying.
"I loved him."
"Love isn't what you feel."
I pointed toward the empty hallway.
"Love is what you do."
He had no response.
Because he knew.
That evening, William came back with another update.
He looked more serious than before.
"Claire."
I immediately noticed.
"What?"
He placed his phone on the table.
A message.
From one of his investigators.
Melissa Carter left Boston this morning.
I stared.
"She ran?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
William hesitated.
"Because someone warned her."
A chill moved through me.
"Who?"
"We don't know."
James leaned forward.
"Are you saying someone else is involved?"
William nodded.
"Possibly."
He opened another file.
"Garrett's company accounts show unusual transfers."
"How unusual?"
"Enough to suggest someone was moving money without his knowledge."
I looked confused.
"But Garrett was cheating."
"Yes."
William's eyes hardened.
"But cheating may not be the whole story."
That was when everything changed.
Because the question was no longer:
Why did Garrett choose Melissa?
The question became:
Who was Melissa really?
Late that night, while I sat beside Ethan's empty bed at home, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Then I answered.
A woman's voice.
Shaking.
Terrified.
"Claire Hale?"
"Who is this?"
"My name is Olivia."
"What do you want?"
A pause.
Then:
"I worked with Melissa Carter."
I sat up.
"What?"
"I know about Garrett."
My heart started pounding.
"And I know what happened the night your son died."
The room became silent.
"Tell me."
Her voice dropped.
"Your husband wasn't the only person who received those eighteen calls."
I froze.
"What are you saying?"
Another pause.
Then the words that changed everything:
May you like
"Someone made sure Garrett never saw them."
The line went dead.
