Chapter 7: The Warehouse

My father locked the doors.
Not metaphorically.
Literally.
The moment he realized I intended to go, he ordered security to close every exit of Sterling Global headquarters.
Two guards stood outside the elevator.
Two more outside the stairwell.
James stood in front of me with his arms crossed.
"Claire."
I looked at him.
"Move."
"No."
My voice was quiet.
"James."
"I know that look."
"What look?"
"The one you had when Ethan was born."
That stopped me.
He stepped closer.
"You were terrified, exhausted, and in pain."
"But when the nurse handed him to you..."
"You looked at everyone like you would fight the whole world if you had to."
His eyes filled.
"You still have that look."
I looked away.
Because he was right.
I wasn't thinking clearly.
I wasn't thinking like a daughter.
Or a sister.
Or even a person who cared about her own safety.
I was thinking like a mother.
A mother who had one unanswered question.
Why?
William entered the room.
He looked older than he had that morning.
Not physically.
Something deeper.
"Claire."
I expected him to order me to stay.
Instead, he said:
"I know where it is."
Everyone looked at him.
James frowned.
"What?"
William stared at the message.
"The warehouse."
His voice became distant.
"That was where Daniel and I started."
"Tell me."
My father sat down.
For the first time, he didn't look like the billionaire everyone feared.
He looked like a man remembering his mistakes.
"Daniel Reed and I were friends before we were partners."
"We built Sterling Global together."
"He handled innovation."
"I handled business."
"We were brothers in everything except blood."
"What happened?"
William looked at his hands.
"I wanted expansion."
"Daniel wanted control."
"I believed I was protecting the company."
He swallowed.
"So I removed him."
James shook his head.
"You destroyed his shares?"
William nodded.
"I bought him out."
"Legally."
"Mostly."
Mostly.
That word mattered.
"Meaning?"
William looked at me.
"Meaning I used information I shouldn't have had."
Silence.
"I forced him out."
I understood then.
Not justified.
Not forgiven.
But understood.
The foundation of all this had started long before Garrett.
Long before Melissa.
Long before Ethan.
A wound that had been left open for twenty years.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
My father's face broke.
"Because I was ashamed."
That answer hurt.
Because I had spent my whole life believing my father was incapable of weakness.
I was wrong.
A security officer interrupted.
"Mr. Sterling."
"What?"
"We traced the warehouse location."
"And?"
The officer hesitated.
"There's a problem."
"What kind?"
"The building is empty."
William frowned.
"But Daniel sent the message."
"Yes."
"Then why is it empty?"
The officer looked at me.
"Because the message was scheduled."
Everyone froze.
A scheduled message.
Not a conversation.
A trap.
The moment we realized it, the lights in the room went out.
Complete darkness.
Someone screamed.
Security immediately moved.
Phones came out.
Emergency lights flickered on.
And then...
Every screen in the office turned on.
The conference room.
The televisions.
The employee monitors.
All displaying the same image.
A video.
A man appeared on the screen.
Older.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
But calm.
"William."
My father's face changed.
"Daniel."
Daniel Reed looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
He smiled faintly.
"...then Claire found the message."
I stepped forward.
"You know who I am."
Daniel looked at the camera.
"Of course I do."
"You're the only person in that family who never deserved any of this."
My hands tightened.
"What did you do to Ethan?"
The video paused.
Daniel looked away.
When he returned, his expression had changed.
Regret.
Not anger.
Regret.
"I didn't kill your son."
I didn't believe him.
"Then why?"
He sighed.
"Because sometimes the truth is worse than the lie."
William stepped closer.
"Where are you?"
Daniel ignored him.
"Claire, your husband wasn't my target."
I froze.
"What?"
"Garrett was never important."
"He was just a door."
The room went silent.
"To what?"
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
"To William."
My father stiffened.
"Everything I did was to expose him."
"The company."
"The money."
"The secrets."
"I wanted him to lose everything the way I lost everything."
My voice shook.
"So you used my family?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I didn't know about Ethan."
That was the first time he sounded human.
"I swear."
"Then who did?"
A long silence.
Then Daniel said:
"Ask Garrett."
The room froze.
"No."
My father shook his head.
"Impossible."
Daniel continued.
"Garrett knew more than he admitted."
My stomach dropped.
"What does that mean?"
The video flickered.
Daniel's voice became distorted.
"Ask him why he kept Ethan's medical emergency from you."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
The screen went black.
The room exploded into movement.
Security searched the building.
Technicians tried to recover the signal.
But I heard nothing.
I only heard one sentence.
Ask Garrett.
An hour later, Garrett was brought back to Sterling Global headquarters.
He looked exhausted.
Confused.
Until he saw my face.
Then he knew.
"What happened?"
I walked toward him.
Slowly.
"Tell me the truth."
His expression changed.
"About what?"
"Ethan."
The color left his face.
My father stepped closer.
"What did you hide?"
Garrett looked between us.
"No."
"Garrett."
"I didn't."
My voice broke.
"Did you know something about Ethan's condition that you never told me?"
His silence answered before his mouth did.
I stepped back.
"No..."
Garrett started crying.
"Claire, listen."
"How long?"
He looked down.
"Two weeks."
The room went silent.
"Two weeks before he died."
My voice barely existed.
"You knew?"
He shook his head.
"I was trying to fix it."
"Fix what?"
His tears fell.
"The insurance."
Everyone froze.
"What insurance?"
Garrett looked at my father.
Then at me.
"I found out Ethan's treatment coverage had been altered."
My breathing stopped.
"By who?"
He whispered:
"Someone inside Sterling Global."
I stared.
"You knew our son might lose access to his medication..."
"...and you didn't tell me?"
"I was scared."
"You were scared?"
My voice rose.
"Our son was sick!"
Garrett collapsed.
"I thought I could handle it."
That sentence broke something inside me.
Because it sounded exactly like every person who thinks consequences only happen to other people.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
"The night Ethan died..."
"I wasn't only with Melissa."
"I was meeting someone else."
Silence.
"Who?"
Garrett looked at William.
Then whispered:
"Daniel Reed."
And suddenly...
The story had one more secret.
May you like
Because the man we thought was the enemy...
May have been trying to warn us all along.
