Chapter 8: The Last Warning

Nobody spoke.

Not William.

Not James.

Not even Garrett.

The name hung in the room like something dangerous.

Daniel Reed.

The man we had spent hours believing was the architect of our destruction.

The man who had ruined our company.

The man who had pulled strings from the shadows.

Now Garrett was telling us he had met him.

On the same night Ethan died.

I stared at Garrett.

"You met Daniel?"

He nodded slowly.

"I didn't know who he was at first."

"Then who did you think he was?"

Garrett looked ashamed.

"Someone who could help."

The anger inside me rose.

"Help?"

My voice cracked.

"You were looking for help while our son was dying?"

"No."

He stepped forward.

"I swear, Claire, that's not what happened."

I wanted to hate him.

I needed to.

It would have been easier.

But the worst part was...

I could see something in his face.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not the fear of being caught.

The fear of knowing something he could never undo.

"Start from the beginning."

Garrett looked at my father.

Then at me.

And finally sat down.

"I found out someone was accessing company records."

"At first, I thought it was Melissa."

"Then I realized she was just collecting information."

My father's expression hardened.

"About what?"

Garrett swallowed.

"Sterling Global."

James stepped forward.

"So you knew?"

Garrett nodded.

"I knew something was wrong."

"Why didn't you tell anyone?"

His eyes dropped.

"Because I was already involved."

The room became colder.

"How?"

Garrett rubbed his hands together.

"Melissa contacted me first."

"She knew things about the company."

"Things only someone inside would know."

My father interrupted.

"Victoria."

Garrett looked at him.

"I thought so too."

A pause.

"But I was wrong."

Everyone looked at him.

"Then who?"

Garrett hesitated.

"I didn't know."

"Not until Daniel contacted me."

My chest tightened.

"What did he want?"

Garrett closed his eyes.

"He wanted William to confess."

My father looked furious.

"Confess to what?"

Garrett didn't answer.

Because he knew.

I looked at my father.

"To what?"

William said nothing.

And that silence was an answer.

"William."

My father's face changed.

The billionaire.

The powerful man.

The man who built everything.

Suddenly looked like a father who had made a mistake.

"I made decisions."

"Years ago."

"What decisions?"

He looked at me.

"I covered up a financial scandal."

James stepped back.

"What?"

William shook his head.

"It wasn't what you think."

"Money disappeared."

"Contracts were manipulated."

"I blamed Daniel because he had the access."

Garrett looked at him.

"But you knew he wasn't responsible."

William didn't answer.

I felt sick.

Because suddenly the truth was bigger than any affair.

Bigger than Melissa.

Bigger than Garrett.

This family had been built on things nobody wanted to talk about.

"Why?"

I whispered.

My father looked at me.

"I was afraid."

The answer was so simple.

So human.

That it hurt.

"I had built something enormous."

"I couldn't let it collapse."

"So I sacrificed someone else."

Garrett looked down.

"And Daniel spent twenty years trying to prove it."

William nodded.

"Yes."

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

It was Garrett's.

Unknown number.

He looked at me.

Then answered.

No one spoke.

Only listened.

A man's voice came through.

Daniel.

"Garrett."

Everyone turned.

"Where are you?"

Garrett stood.

"Daniel, listen—"

"No."

His voice was tired.

"Listen to me."

William grabbed the phone.

"Daniel."

A pause.

Then:

"William."

The hatred in that single word was clear.

"I didn't kill your grandson."

William's face tightened.

"Where are you?"

Daniel ignored him.

"Claire needs the truth."

I stepped closer.

"Then tell me."

Silence.

Then Daniel said:

"I tried to warn you."

My heart stopped.

"About what?"

"About Melissa."

Garrett looked confused.

"You said she was just a tool."

"She was."

Daniel's voice became darker.

"But she stopped following the plan."

"What plan?"

Daniel answered:

"The plan was to expose William."

"Not destroy Ethan."

I closed my eyes.

"Then what happened?"

A long silence.

Then:

"Melissa found out about the medical situation."

My blood ran cold.

"She knew Ethan could die?"

"Yes."

Nobody breathed.

"Why didn't she tell me?"

Daniel's voice lowered.

"Because she believed it would break Garrett."

I looked at my husband.

"And you?"

Garrett looked away.

Daniel continued.

"She wanted Garrett emotionally destroyed."

"She wanted him dependent."

"She wanted him to lose everything."

I felt sick.

"So she let my son die..."

Daniel didn't answer.

Because he didn't have to.

Then he said:

"But there is one thing you don't know."

"What?"

"The night Ethan died..."

"Melissa wasn't the one who blocked your calls."

My body froze.

"What?"

Everyone looked at Garrett.

Daniel continued:

"Someone else did."

The room went silent.

"Who?"

Daniel took a breath.

Then:

"Garrett."

The world stopped.

I stared at my husband.

"No."

Garrett's face went white.

"No."

Daniel repeated:

"He blocked your calls."

"He chose not to answer."

Garrett backed away.

"That's a lie."

"Is it?"

Daniel's voice sharpened.

"Tell her why you turned your phone off."

I looked at Garrett.

Waiting.

Begging him to deny it.

To say anything.

But he couldn't.

Finally, he whispered:

"I was angry."

My heart shattered.

"Angry?"

"I thought you were leaving me."

"What?"

"I saw messages between you and your father."

"You were talking about divorce."

I couldn't understand.

"You thought I was leaving you?"

Garrett started crying.

"I panicked."

"So you ignored me?"

"I didn't think—"

"No."

My voice broke.

"You didn't."

Daniel's voice came through one last time.

"Claire."

I looked at the phone.

"I'm sorry."

Then:

"You need to know the final truth."

The line crackled.

"Melissa didn't create this."

"William didn't create this."

"Even I didn't create this."

A pause.

"The person who destroyed your family..."

"Was someone you trusted most."

The call ended.

And everyone looked at Victoria.

May you like

Because she was the only person who knew everything.

The only person still silent.
