Chapter 9: The Woman Who Knew Everything

Everyone turned toward Victoria.
She stood near the window, motionless.
For the first time since we found her in my father's office, she looked afraid.
Not of the security team.
Not of the police.
Of the truth.
Because secrets only have power while they stay buried.
And now the ground beneath all of them had cracked open.
My father stepped toward her.
"Victoria."
His voice was different.
Not the voice of a CEO.
Not the voice of a man used to commanding rooms.
The voice of someone who had just realized he might have trusted the wrong person for twenty years.
"Is it you?"
Victoria looked at him.
And the sadness in her eyes was the answer before she spoke.
"I'm sorry."
Those two words destroyed everything.
James immediately moved.
Security reacted.
But my father raised his hand.
"Wait."
Victoria looked at me.
"I never wanted Ethan hurt."
My hands curled into fists.
"Don't say his name."
She flinched.
"You don't get to say you cared."
"I know."
"No."
My voice shook.
"You don't know."
I stepped closer.
"You watched my family fall apart."
"You watched Garrett betray me."
"You watched my son die."
Her eyes filled.
"And I will carry that."
The room was silent.
Then William asked:
"Why?"
Just one word.
A question from a man who had spent his entire life believing he understood people.
Victoria looked at him.
"Because you destroyed my family too."
My father went still.
"What?"
She laughed softly.
A broken sound.
"You don't remember."
"No."
"Of course you don't."
She looked around the office.
"The powerful never remember the people they hurt."
She walked toward the desk.
Slowly.
Carefully.
"Twenty years ago, my husband worked for you."
William frowned.
"Your husband?"
"Thomas Bennett."
The name meant something.
I saw it.
A flicker.
A memory.
"Thomas was in finance."
Victoria continued.
"He discovered the missing funds."
"The same funds you blamed on Daniel."
My father's face changed.
"That was..."
"A lie."
Her voice cut through the room.
"You needed someone to take the fall."
"And Thomas refused."
The silence became unbearable.
"What happened to him?"
I asked.
Victoria looked at me.
"He was arrested."
My stomach dropped.
"Wrongfully?"
She nodded.
"He spent seven years fighting."
"Seven years proving he was innocent."
"And when the truth finally came out..."
Her voice broke.
"He was already gone."
Nobody moved.
Because now I understood.
Victoria didn't just hate my father.
She hated the entire world he represented.
A world where rich people made decisions and ordinary people paid the price.
"Then why stay?"
My father asked.
"If you hated me, why work beside me for twenty years?"
Victoria looked at him.
"Because I wanted you to trust me."
"Why?"
"Because revenge requires patience."
James stepped forward.
"So you manipulated everything."
Victoria didn't deny it.
"I helped Melissa access information."
"I helped Daniel."
"I helped expose the company."
My heart tightened.
"But Ethan?"
She closed her eyes.
"I didn't know Melissa would go that far."
"She promised she only wanted Garrett."
I looked at her.
"And you believed her?"
She whispered:
"I wanted to."
That sentence was worse than a confession.
Because it meant she knew.
She suspected.
And she did nothing.
"What did you do the night Ethan died?"
Victoria looked down.
"I saw the calls."
My breathing stopped.
"You saw them?"
She nodded.
"Your number appeared again and again."
"Emergency."
"Critical."
"Come immediately."
The room went silent.
"Then why didn't you tell Garrett?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because I was angry."
I stared.
"Angry?"
She nodded.
"I spent twenty years watching people like your family escape consequences."
"I wanted Garrett to lose something."
A tear fell.
"But I never imagined it would be Ethan."
I couldn't speak.
Because there it was.
The truth.
Not a monster.
Not a villain.
A person who let hatred become more important than humanity.
My father looked destroyed.
"What happened after?"
Victoria swallowed.
"I called Melissa."
"And?"
"She panicked."
"She told me she didn't expect him to ignore the calls."
Garrett looked up.
"Wait."
Everyone looked at him.
"You mean..."
Victoria nodded.
"Melissa thought you would answer."
Garrett collapsed into a chair.
The realization hit him.
Because even the person who betrayed him had not expected him to make the worst choice.
I looked at him.
And for the first time...
I saw the full truth.
Garrett wasn't innocent.
But he wasn't the only person who failed Ethan.
Everyone had.
Every adult in the room.
Every person who chose pride over a child.
Then Victoria reached into her bag.
Security moved.
But she pulled out only a small flash drive.
"I kept this."
She placed it on the table.
"Everything."
My father stared.
"What's on it?"
"Proof."
"Of what?"
"All of it."
The flash drive contained:
Financial records.
Messages.
Recorded conversations.
Every transaction.
Every lie.
Every person involved.
Including one final file.
A video.
Created the night Ethan died.
James opened it.
The screen loaded.
And there she was.
Melissa.
Sitting in a hotel room.
Crying.
Talking to someone.
Someone off-camera.
"I can't do this anymore."
A man's voice answered.
"You already did."
Melissa shook her head.
"I didn't know the boy would die."
The man said:
"Stop pretending you care."
Everyone froze.
Because that voice...
We all knew it.
The video continued.
Melissa looked terrified.
"I want out."
The man laughed.
"You don't get out."
A pause.
"Not after what you helped me do."
The camera shifted slightly.
Just enough.
Enough to reveal the person sitting across from her.
William whispered:
"No."
Because the man in the video...
Was not Daniel.
Was not Garrett.
Was not Victoria.
It was someone we had never suspected.
Someone who had been watching everything.
Someone who had been close to our family the entire time.
The screen froze.
And the name appeared on the file:
STERLING_FINAL_TRUTH.mp4
My father stepped back.
His face turned pale.
"That's impossible."
I looked at him.
"Who is it?"
He couldn't answer.
Then the office door opened.
A police officer entered.
Holding a file.
"Mr. Sterling."
Everyone turned.
"We found the person connected to the video."
A pause.
"They surrendered ten minutes ago."
The officer looked at me.
"Mrs. Hale..."
"I'm not Mrs. Hale anymore."
He nodded.
"Claire."
His expression was serious.
"The person waiting downstairs..."
"...is your husband's mother."
Garrett froze.
"My mother?"
The officer nodded.
"She says she can explain everything."
May you like
And suddenly...
The final piece of the nightmare had arrived.
