Chapter 3 - The Panicked Alliance

By 11:00 AM, the glass-and-steel headquarters of Bellandi Development Group was in a state of absolute chaos.

Inside his corner office on the forty-fifth floor, Sebastian was frantically tossing leather-bound binders and folders out of his desk drawers onto the plush Persian rug. His tie was loosened, his hair disheveled, and the sleek composure that had defined him for a decade was completely gone.

“Where are the physical ledgers?” he roared, slamming a drawer shut so hard the glass desk frame rattled. “Quinn! Where are the physical copies of the 2025 construction logs?”

Quinn was leaning against the heavy mahogany door, her face pale, her hands trembling as she scrolled frantically through her laptop screen. The diamond bracelet on her wrist, once a symbol of her victory over me, now felt like a lead weight.

“They aren't on the local server, Sebastian!” she cried, her voice rising in hysteria. “The root directory has been locked by an administrator account! I can't even access my own email files!”

Sebastian spun around, his chest heaving. “What do you mean locked? You have master admin privileges!”

“Not anymore!” she yelled back, tears cutting through her heavy makeup. “Someone revoked my permissions at 7:15 this morning! My access token was flagged for security clearance review!”

Sebastian gripped the edge of his desk, his mind racing wildly. He was trying to connect dots that were moving far too fast for him. He thought he was dealing with a simple bitter wife who had hired a clever lawyer. He had no idea he was caught in the jaws of a pre-planned corporate trap designed to strip him of his authority before he could execute his next move.

“It’s Wendy,” Sebastian muttered, his eyes darting across the room. “She must have hired a private investigator... or a hacker. She took my laptop two weeks ago when I was in the shower. She said she was printing a pediatric appointment schedule!”

“It’s not just Wendy!” Quinn snapped, her fear turning into sharp, venomous anger. “Look at this message again, Sebastian! Look at the angle of this photo!”

She held her phone up to his face. The photo showed the interior of his safe—the exact safe located behind the oil painting to his right. The photo was taken from the exact height and angle of someone standing directly beside his desk.

“This was taken today,” Quinn whispered, her eyes wide with paranoia. “The sunlight shadow on the wall matches the 9:00 AM angle. Someone stood in this room while we were at your house kicking Wendy out. Someone opened your safe, took the picture, and sent it straight to my personal, unlisted burner number!”

Sebastian stared at the photo. The icy cold realization finally began to settle into his gut.

“Only three people have the combination to that safe,” Sebastian said, his voice dropping to a hollow whisper. “Me, you... and Marcus.”

“Marcus,” Quinn spat the name like poison. “It’s Marcus! He’s been working with her!”

“No,” Sebastian shook his head, trying to deny the obvious. “Marcus wouldn't do that. He’s spent twelve years building this company with me. He wouldn't burn his own firm to the ground!”

“He would if he knew you were planning to dilute his shares next month!” Quinn yelled.

Sebastian’s heart stopped. His head snapped toward her.

That detail—the planned share dilution that would strip Marcus of his voting rights—was a secret Sebastian had discussed only with Quinn and his private corporate attorney. It wasn't written down anywhere.

“How do you know about the share dilution, Quinn?” Sebastian asked, his voice suddenly dangerously calm. “I never showed you those draft documents.”

Quinn caught her breath, realizing her fatal mistake. Her eyes darted toward the door. “I... I saw the draft files on your desk last week while I was filing the tax reports.”

“Those files were stored on an encrypted flash drive inside my jacket pocket,” Sebastian said, stepping around his desk, his eyes narrowing as he looked at his mistress with fresh suspicion. “You went through my coat?”

“Sebastian, don't do this right now!” she pleaded, taking a step back toward the door. “We are facing criminal fraud charges in four hours! We need to focus on the frozen accounts!”

“Where is the money, Quinn?” Sebastian demanded, his voice echoing off the glass walls. “The secondary escrow account—the $800,000 we set aside for the land purchase in Oregon. The bank told me this morning that account was emptied three days ago via an online wire transfer signed with your digital key!”

The air in the room turned suffocation-heavy. The fragile alliance built on greed, vanity, and mutual deception was tearing apart at the seams under the pressure of their own paranoia.

Before Quinn could formulate another lie, the heavy mahogany door swung open.

Marcus Kane stood in the doorway, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, holding a sleek black leather portfolio under his arm. He looked at Sebastian, then at Quinn, his face completely devoid of emotion.

“The board members have arrived early,” Marcus said calmly. “And the forensic audit team from the State Licensing Board is waiting for you in Conference Room A, Sebastian. I suggest you straighten your tie.”
