Chapter 6 - The Reckoning

By late afternoon, the media storm had descended upon the Bellandi Development headquarters. Cameras flashed outside the glass entrance as Sebastian and Quinn were led out in handcuffs by state troopers, their faces splashed across every local news network and financial blog in the region.
Inside the quiet executive office on the forty-fifth floor, the dust was finally beginning to settle.
Marcus Kane stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking down at the crowd of reporters below, holding two cups of fresh herbal tea. He walked over and handed one to me as I sat on the leather sofa, cradling Cameron, who had just finished nursing and was burping softly against my shoulder.
“The board just held an emergency vote,” Marcus said gently, taking a seat in the armchair opposite me. “They’ve officially removed Sebastian as CEO and named me interim Chief Executive Officer. And as majority trust proxy, you’ve been appointed Chairwoman of the Board of Directors.”
I took a slow sip of the warm tea, feeling the deep, bone-weary exhaustion of the last three weeks finally catching up to me. “What’s the financial status of the projects?”
“Thanks to your emergency injunctions,” Marcus replied, “we recovered three point two million of the escrow funds within hours. The Cayman accounts have been frozen under international asset-recovery protocols. The firm will survive, Wendy. In fact, without Sebastian siphoning profits off the top, we’ll be stronger than we’ve been in five years.”
He looked at me with deep, genuine respect. “You handled that like a veteran prosecutor. I’ve never seen a corporate takedown executed with such precision.”
“I didn't do it for revenge, Marcus,” I said, looking down at Cameron’s sweet, innocent face. “I did it because if I didn't fight back, my son would have grown up believing his mother was weak, and his father was above the law. I needed Cameron to inherit a clean name and a secure future.”
“And what about the Lakefront house?” Marcus asked.
“The house is registered under the family trust,” I said. “Tomorrow morning, I’m changing the locks. Quinn’s clothes will be donated to a shelter. Sebastian’s personal belongings will be packed into boxes and sent to his defense attorney’s office.”
My phone chimed on the table. It was a notification from Victoria Vance.
Sebastian’s bail hearing is set for tomorrow at 10:00 AM. The prosecution is requesting a $2 million cash bond due to flight risk. Quinn’s public defender is attempting to negotiate a plea deal, but she’s facing a mandatory five-year minimum sentence for the offshore embezzlement.
I closed the text message, feeling no malice, no joy—only a profound sense of closure.

Sebastian had believed he was playing a master game of chess against an opponent who didn't even know she was on the board. He had treated love, marriage, fatherhood, and business as disposable commodities to be manipulated for his personal vanity. He had forgotten that true strength isn't found in arrogance, expensive suits, or hidden accounts.
True strength is found in a mother’s unyielding instinct to protect her child at any cost.
