Chapter 8 - The True North

Later that afternoon, I walked down to the edge of the lake, holding Cameron in my arms as the cool autumn breeze ruffled his soft golden hair.
The waves pulled softly against the pebbled shore, creating a soothing, rhythmic sound.
I pulled back the sleeve of my sweater, looking down at my left wrist. Where Sebastian’s wedding ring had once sat, there was now a thin, delicate gold bracelet I had bought for myself—a clean, unadorned band that symbolized my independence, my resilience, and my complete reclamation of my life.
Cameron turned his head, reaching his little hand up to pat my cheek, his soft babble breaking through the quiet air.
“We did it, my sweet boy,” I whispered to him, pressing a gentle kiss against his soft forehead.
Sebastian and Quinn had thought they could strip me of my dignity, my home, and my future. They had believed that a nursing mother was helpless, exhausted, and easily defeated. They had mistaken my quiet devotion for weakness, and my patience for ignorance.
They had forgotten that before I was a wife, I was a investigator who knew how to find the truth in the dark. And before I was an auditor, I was a mother whose fierce, unconditional love for her child could tear down empires.

The storm had passed. The wreckage had been cleared. And on the firm, unshakeable foundation of truth and courage, I had built a safe, beautiful world for my son—a world where no one would ever take his future away again.
